Cursor Rules: How to Give Your AI Agent Better Project Context

Cursor rules give an AI agent project-specific conventions and workflows. Learn where to put them, how to scope them, and why code still needs review.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cursor rules can make an AI agent more consistent with a project’s conventions, commands, and workflows—but they cannot guarantee correct code or eliminate poor output. Put project-specific instructions in .cursor/rules, scope each rule to the work it applies to, and verify changes with the same review and checks you use for code written by a person.

Where do Cursor rules go?

For instructions that belong to a particular codebase, create rule files in the project’s .cursor/rules directory. Project rules are scoped to that codebase and can be committed to version control, so teammates can use the same guidance.

Cursor also supports user-level rules and Memories. User rules are for personal preferences that should apply across projects; project rules are for conventions and workflows that belong to one repository. Memories are distinct from explicit rules: use a written rule when you need a deliberate, reviewable instruction the team can maintain.

Cursor identifies .cursorrules as a legacy, deprecated format and recommends Project Rules instead. Its documentation also describes AGENTS.md as a plain Markdown alternative. For Cursor CLI users, the CLI reads root-level AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md alongside .cursor/rules; do not assume that CLI-specific behavior describes every Cursor interface. See Cursor’s Rules documentation and CLI instructions.

Choose the narrowest useful scope

Cursor project rule files use MDC metadata to describe how and where instructions apply. Choose based on whether the guidance is universal, tied to particular files, or useful only when an agent selects it.

Rule type How it is activated Best fit
Always Included broadly as guidance for work in the project. Short, foundational conventions that are relevant to nearly every task.
Auto Attached Attached when the files being worked on match the rule’s path globs. Language, framework, or directory-specific conventions.
Agent Requested Made available for the agent to select; include a description so it can identify when the rule is relevant. Less frequent workflows or specialized guidance that should not be included broadly.

Cursor describes these types and the metadata used to configure rules in its Rules documentation. Avoid treating every rule as if it automatically applies to every request: scope and activation affect whether the guidance is in context.

How do I create a Cursor rules file?

  1. Identify a repeated correction or stable project fact the agent needs. Examples include which validation helper to use, how to run tests, or which existing component demonstrates the project’s preferred pattern.

  2. Create a rule file in .cursor/rules and give it metadata appropriate to its scope, such as a description, path globs, or an always-applied setting. Use the activation type that fits the instruction rather than making every rule global.

  3. Write specific actions and point to relevant project files. For example, tell the agent to use the existing API validation helper at src/... and follow the pattern in a named canonical file. Replace these illustrative paths with files that actually exist in your repository.

  4. Include the project’s real commands where they matter, such as the build, type-check, or test command, and say when to run them. Cursor’s coding-agent best practices recommend useful context, concrete instructions, and review rather than relying on vague aspirations.

  5. Inspect the rule in a real task, review the generated changes, and revise the instruction if the repository or workflow changes.

How do I write a useful Cursor rules file?

Cursor’s Rules documentation says, “Good rules are focused, actionable, and scoped.” It also advises: “Avoid vague guidance. Write rules the way you would write a clear internal doc.” Translate those principles into instructions an agent can follow and a developer can check.

Prefer observable actions to broad quality demands

“Write clean code” does not define what the project considers clean. More useful guidance names an action or constraint: use the existing API validation helper, preserve the error response shape, or add tests using the repository’s established test pattern. Keep each instruction tied to a real convention, not a preference the team cannot explain.

Use real commands and canonical examples

Replace generic directions with the exact build, type-check, and test commands used by your project. Point to a representative file when it is the clearest example of a pattern. Referencing a maintained example is usually more useful than copying a large body of documentation into a rule that can become stale.

Keep rules concise and composable

Cursor recommends keeping rules under 500 lines as a good target; this is documentation guidance, not a measured threshold at which agent quality changes. Split large topics into focused rules, then scope each one to the relevant files or workflow. A short rule that clearly applies is easier to maintain than a sprawling file full of unrelated advice.

How do I stop Cursor from changing code conventions?

Put stable conventions in the rule that applies to the relevant code, and name the pattern the agent should preserve. If the project uses a shared helper or established component structure, identify it directly. When a convention differs by language or directory, use path-based activation rather than burying the exception in a broad rule.

Rules can shape the context Cursor uses; they are not a guarantee that a change follows the convention. Check which instructions are active for the task, inspect the diff for unwanted pattern changes, and run the project’s normal checks. Cursor’s agent guidance discusses reviewing agent work at Best practices for coding with agents.
