A honeypot appearing to accept a submission does not prove that it caught a real person—or even that it stored or delivered anything. The phrase “only caught me” describes an incident, not an established property of spam traps: without the form’s behavior and logs, it is impossible to tell whether a human was misclassified, a bot interacted with a decoy, or a success message merely masked a rejection.
First, distinguish the two kinds of trap
“Spam trap” can refer to an email address used to flag questionable mailing practices, while a website honeypot is a page or form designed to expose harvesting or automated submissions. They operate at different points in a workflow, so a trap report and a form’s apparent success are not interchangeable evidence.

| Kind | Where it operates | What it is intended to reveal | Evidence to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email spam trap | A recipient address on an email list | Unsolicited sending or weak collection and list-hygiene practices | The provider’s trap-hit report, list provenance, consent records and sending history |
| Website honeypot | A web page, hidden or obscured address, or special form | Address harvesting or automated form activity | Form configuration, application logs, request details and the outcome recorded by the site |
Project Honey Pot describes web traps that can use obscured addresses, sometimes unique to a visitor, as well as special HTML forms that expose comment spam. It says messages to its distributed trap addresses reach its servers directly. That is a different mechanism from an email provider reporting that a mailing list contained a trap address. What “success” can mean—and what it cannot prove
A confirmation message is only one observable outcome. Depending on the implementation, the site may show a generic success screen while silently discarding a submission, accepting it into an application queue, or actually storing it for later processing. Those outcomes cannot be inferred from the words on the screen alone.

- Email Continuity & Clean-Up Tools: Reduces email server load and ensures clean, filtered mail delivery to help protect business productivity.
- Displayed confirmation: proves the browser received a success-like response, not that a record was saved or an email was sent.
- Stored submission: requires a corresponding server-side record or application event; a visible confirmation alone does not establish this.
- Delivered email: requires delivery evidence from the sending system. A form response does not establish that a notification reached an inbox.
- Trap hit: an email trap report indicates that the reported address received mail; it does not, by itself, show a website honeypot falsely classified a person.
So if a honeypot “only caught me,” the useful question is what was caught: a browser request, a form entry, an email address, or a message classified as spam. A false positive in an email filter means a legitimate message was classified as spam; it is not the same event as a trap address receiving a message.
Why an email address might be a spam trap
Trap categories describe different ways an address may be associated with a mailing list. They do not establish how any particular address got there.

- Pristine traps are addresses created without an active owner or prior opt-in. Twilio SendGrid says they may enter lists through purchased, rented or scraped data, or through unsecured forms that bots can submit. Twilio SendGrid: Spam Traps.
- Recycled traps are addresses that were once used for legitimate email and later repurposed as traps, according to Mailgun. Mailgun: What Are Spam Traps and Why Should I Avoid Them?.
- Typo traps use common misspellings of popular email domains, as described by SendGrid and Mailgun.
A hit is a reason to examine acquisition, permission, form protection and list maintenance—not proof that every recipient on the list is invalid, nor evidence of a universal trap false-positive rate. Trap addresses are generally kept secret. Adobe says they are generally not published and are almost impossible to identify; Spamhaus advises correcting collection and hygiene practices rather than hunting for individual addresses. Start with the implementation and the specific event. A decoy field, a hidden link, and an email trap address capture different behavior; the right explanation depends on what the system actually recorded.

- Record the exact path. Note the page, form, time, browser and steps taken. Preserve the response shown to the user, including whether it was a confirmation, an error, or a redirect.
- Check server-side evidence. Look for a stored record, application event, validation outcome, or notification attempt associated with that submission. Do not treat a client-side message as proof of backend acceptance.
- Review the trap logic. Identify which field, address, timing rule or request characteristic marks an interaction as suspicious. Confirm whether the field is truly hidden or otherwise inaccessible to ordinary visitors, and whether scripts or accessibility tools alter its behavior.
- Compare legitimate and flagged submissions. Look for a shared browser or interaction pattern, such as autofill, password-manager behavior, delayed submission, or a client-side script issue. These are checks to investigate, not established causes of any individual incident.
- Change the specific failure point. If a real user can trigger the trap through the normal form, correct that condition and test the complete server-side path—not just the displayed confirmation.
Logs can establish what the application received and did; they may not identify who was operating a browser. Avoid claiming that the system caught a person unless the evidence distinguishes a human interaction from automated traffic.

Trace the address to its source and review the process that added it. Focus on permission and provenance rather than trying to suppress a secret trap address after discovery. Spamhaus puts the principle plainly: “We strongly urge people to view spamtraps as proof of a data collection or hygiene issue and not be misled into conducting a hunt for spamtraps.” Spamhaus guidance.
- Review whether list entries came from a documented opt-in, a purchase, a rental, a scrape, or a website form.
- Inspect signup forms and their protections against automated submissions.
- Check address validation and the process for removing stale or invalid recipients.
- Pause questionable acquisition sources while you establish how addresses entered the list.
Consequences vary by provider. Amazon SES says trap reports can prompt an account review or sending pause, but it does not publish a specific number of hits that triggers action. AWS recommends investigating the sending cause, describing corrective steps in the support case, and explaining how the steps prevent recurrence. It also warns that even a small number of hits can seriously affect reputation. Amazon SES Sending Review Process FAQs.
