Cursor: How to Fix the “Waiting for Extension Host” Hang

Cursor’s “Waiting for extension host” message can have several causes. Start with an extensions-disabled test, then try targeted cache and reload steps before considering a profile or state reset.

If Cursor is stuck on “Waiting for extension host,” there is no single fix: the message can have several causes. Start by recording your version and testing with extensions disabled, then move to cache, reload, and diagnostic steps. Treat resets as a last resort because they can remove settings or require you to sign in again.

What “Waiting for extension host” means

The message indicates that Cursor’s extension host or agent is not responding, but it does not identify the cause. Cursor forum support representative Dean Rie wrote on April 17, 2026, that it “isn’t one bug” and can arise from different issues under the same symptom; there is no one fix for every case. Extensions are one possibility, so testing with them disabled is useful. But the message alone does not establish that an extension, your network, or your account is at fault. Reports have described different circumstances, including a version-specific missing cursor-socket file, without establishing a universal explanation. Cursor Community Forum

Work through these checks in order

1. Record the version and what triggers the hang

In Cursor, open Help > About Cursor and note the version. Also write down what you did immediately before the hang, whether it happens every time, roughly how large the workspace is, and whether the session is local or uses Remote SSH or WSL. Note whether waiting 30–60 seconds and retrying changes the behavior. Cursor support has requested this context in reports about persistent hangs. Cursor Community Forum

2. Check whether extensions are involved

Close Cursor, then launch it from a terminal with extensions disabled:

cursor --disable-extensions

If the hang stops, that is evidence to investigate extensions, not proof that a particular extension is responsible. Re-enable them methodically and watch for the issue to return; if it does, narrow down which extension or combination coincides with it. If the hang continues with extensions disabled, move on rather than assuming an extension is the cause. Cursor Community Forum

3. On Windows, clear the extension caches

Cursor staff have suggested clearing these two cache folders for Windows reports:

  • %APPDATA%CursorCachedExtensions
  • %APPDATA%CursorCachedExtensionVSIXs

Clear the folders and restart Cursor. This is a suggested troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix. Cursor Community Forum

4. Restart the extension host or reload the window

In Cursor’s command palette, try Developer: Restart Extension Host. If needed, try Developer: Reload Window With Extensions Disabled. These options are among the steps listed in Cursor forum guidance. Cursor Community Forum

5. Capture errors if the hang remains

  1. Open Help > Toggle Developer Tools.
  2. Select the Console tab and copy relevant red error messages.
  3. Include those errors with your Cursor version, trigger, workspace size, and whether the session is local or uses SSH/WSL when reporting the issue.

These details help distinguish a general hang from a version-, environment-, or workspace-specific failure. Cursor Community Forum Cursor Community Forum

Use profile or state resets cautiously

If narrower checks do not help, a temporary profile can test whether your usual profile or settings are involved. The command cursor --profile-temp appears in a Linux support thread as a diagnostic test; it is not a universal repair. Cursor Community Forum

More disruptive Windows tests have included renaming %APPDATA%Cursor to make Cursor start with fresh state, or renaming an unusually large state.vscdb. Back up the relevant files or folder before trying either. A fresh state can reset settings, and changing the database may mean you need to sign in again. Neither step is guaranteed to fix the hang. How version-specific reports fit

Cursor staff said the 3.0 series included extension-host stability improvements and that the issue was resolved for most users, while some remained affected and needed case-specific investigation. That does not establish that every later hang has the same cause or that updating alone will solve it. Cursor Community Forum

A separate March 2026 thread about Cursor 2.6.14 described a missing cursor-socket output directory; a staff member said that specific packaging issue should be fixed in 2.6.18. The thread also contains later reports, so this is best understood as a historical, version-specific case—not a diagnosis for all “Waiting for extension host” hangs. Cursor Community Forum

Reports about later builds and platform-specific conditions have also been summarized by Think Facility, but that is a secondary guide, not a substitute for current Cursor release information. The available support reports do not establish a current stable version, a universal root cause, or a guaranteed fix. Think Facility
