Apple Pay and Apple Music reached their ten-year anniversaries in different years: Apple announced Apple Pay on September 9, 2014, and Apple Music debuted on June 30, 2015. The decade offers a useful contrast. Apple Pay brought an existing task—paying—into Apple devices and a network of banks and merchants; Apple Music combined on-demand listening with curated radio and artist-facing features.
Two services, two different launch dates
Apple Pay was announced in 2014, so its ten-year mark came in 2024. Apple Music was announced in June 2015 and launched later that month, making 2025 its tenth anniversary. Neither service took a decade to arrive; the anniversary framing looks back at a decade of development after each launch.

Apple Pay started with device, bank and merchant integration
Apple’s September 2014 announcement positioned Apple Pay around the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, using NFC, a Secure Element and Touch ID; Apple also named Apple Watch as a supported device. The service depended not just on hardware but on card networks, banks and merchants. Apple’s initial US partners included Visa, MasterCard and American Express, alongside banks such as Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, Citi and Wells Fargo. Apple said the named banks represented 83 percent of US credit card purchase volume at launch—a claim about that initial group in 2014, not a measure of present-day coverage. Apple’s September 9, 2014 announcement described the launch design.
Apple also described a security model in which the actual card number would not be stored on the device or Apple servers. Instead, it said an encrypted Device Account Number and a unique transaction number were used. That is Apple’s launch-era description, not an independent security audit. At the time, Eddy Cue, then Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said: “Security and privacy is at the core of Apple Pay.”

Apple’s 2024 snapshot of reach
In its October 17, 2024 tenth-anniversary update, Apple reported Apple Pay was used by hundreds of millions of consumers in 78 markets, accepted at millions of websites and apps and tens of millions of stores, and supported by more than 11,000 bank and network partners. Those are Apple’s dated figures, not an independent count or a guarantee that a particular bank, merchant or feature is available in every market. Apple’s October 2024 update also described uses involving eligible event tickets, transit cards, keys and government IDs, as well as rewards and installment options. Availability of those items and financing options depends on market and eligibility; Apple said lending is provided by lenders, not Apple.
What Apple’s survey figures do—and do not—say
The same Apple update presented findings from an Apple-commissioned Morning Consult survey conducted September 10–13, 2024, among 3,014 US adults ages 18–64. Apple reported that 90% cited ease of use, 88% privacy and 87% security as reasons they love Apple Pay. Its graphics also reported 85% were very or extremely satisfied and 98% likely to recommend it. These are sponsored survey results from US adults in the specified age range and period, not global findings or independent product testing.
Apple Music combined streaming with radio and artist connection
Apple announced Apple Music on June 8, 2015, and launched it on June 30. Its original bundle included on-demand streaming, human-curated playlists, Beats 1 live radio and Connect, a feature intended to let artists share material with fans. Apple said at announcement that the catalog contained over 30 million songs and that the service would be available in more than 100 countries. Both figures describe the 2015 launch announcement, not the current catalog or present availability. Apple’s June 2015 launch release set out that original offer.

Unlike Apple Pay, whose usefulness depended on payment hardware and acceptance across financial and retail partners, Apple Music’s promise centered on bringing different ways of listening into one service. Cue described the launch as: “All the ways people love enjoying music come together in one app — a revolutionary streaming service, live worldwide radio and an exciting way for fans to connect with artists.”
Launch pricing was historical
Apple’s 2015 release announced a three-month trial followed by an individual subscription at $9.99 per month, or a family plan for up to six people at $14.99 per month. Those were launch-era prices and terms, not current pricing; the announcement is not a guide to today’s subscription plans.

The 2025 anniversary emphasized artists, not subscriber counts
For Apple Music’s tenth anniversary on June 30, 2025, Apple announced a new global hub for artists. That milestone points to continued investment in artist-facing tools, but the cited announcement does not provide subscriber totals or market share. Its silence on those metrics is not evidence of either growth or decline. Apple’s June 30, 2025 announcement describes the artist hub.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the decade comparison can establish
- Launch timing: Apple Pay’s announcement came in 2014; Apple Music’s announcement and debut followed in 2015.
- Different dependencies: Apple Pay required device integration and cooperation from banks, networks and merchants. Apple Music’s initial proposition joined a catalog with curation, radio and artist connection.
- Uneven anniversary evidence: Apple’s 2024 Apple Pay update offered dated reach and survey figures. Its 2025 Apple Music announcement highlighted an artist hub but did not quantify subscribers or market share.
Those differences make for a meaningful retrospective, but they do not establish which service was more successful. The available anniversary figures measure different things, and Apple’s announcements are company-reported accounts rather than independent evaluations.
