Cryptocurrency hash rate is the number of hashing calculations a miner performs each second. For a proof-of-work network, the network hash rate estimates the combined rate of all miners’ calculations. It measures computational work—not transactions processed per second.
What does hash rate mean in crypto?
A hash is the output of a mathematical function applied to data. Hash rate, written in hashes per second (H/s), describes how many such calculations a device or group of devices performs in one second. Bitcoin.org defines it as the processing-power measure of the Bitcoin network in its Hash Rate glossary entry.

Prefixes express larger rates: kH/s is one thousand hashes per second; MH/s, one million; GH/s, one billion; TH/s, one trillion; PH/s, one quadrillion; and EH/s, one quintillion. Bitcoin.org identifies TH/s, PH/s and EH/s as common units for Bitcoin at network scale.

A rate is not the same as a total count. A miner that performs a given number of hashes each second will perform more hashes over a longer period; the accumulated attempts are a count, while hash rate is the count divided by time.

What are miners hashing?
In Bitcoin mining, software prepares a candidate block header and a target threshold. Mining hardware repeatedly hashes the header, trying different nonce values and, when needed, other header data. A hash that meets the target can be submitted as a valid proof of work; unsuccessful attempts lead to more calculations. The Bitcoin Developer Guide’s mining explanation describes this process and the use of specialized ASIC hardware.
Mining pools set a less demanding share target so participants can report work more frequently than they would find a network-valid block. A share gives the pool evidence of a miner’s contribution for accounting and payout purposes; it is not necessarily a block accepted by the Bitcoin network.

Device hash rate and network hash rate are different
A device’s hash rate describes that device’s processing capacity, often as specified by its manufacturer. Network hash rate is an estimate of the aggregate computational power directed at a particular proof-of-work network. The measures have different scopes, so a device’s rating should not be mistaken for the network total.

A miner’s fraction of network hash rate can indicate its relative share of the work, but it does not by itself determine profit. Mining revenue and costs also depend on difficulty, rewards, transaction fees, the asset’s price and operating expenses such as electricity.
How is Bitcoin network hash rate estimated?
No observer can directly count every mining machine and every hash it performs across the network at a particular instant. Network hash rate is therefore an estimate inferred from proof-of-work and block-production data, and the selected observation window matters.
Bitcoin Core’s version 25.0 documentation describes the getnetworkhashps RPC as returning estimated network hashes per second based on the last n blocks. Its default lookback is 120 blocks; a value of -1 uses blocks since the last difficulty change, and a block height can be provided for a historical estimate. Different windows or recent block histories can produce different estimates.

In a 2024 SEC filing, Stronghold Digital Mining described a Bitcoin estimate based on blocks solved over the prior 24 hours divided by 144, multiplied by difficulty and 232, then divided by 600 seconds. Those 144 blocks per day and 600 seconds per target interval are the Bitcoin assumptions used in that filing’s explanation, not a universal formula for every cryptocurrency.
Historical figures illustrate why dates and attribution matter: Stronghold reported a seven-day average Bitcoin network hash rate of 649 EH/s and difficulty of 82.1 trillion as of July 28, 2024. Greenidge Generation Holdings reported an estimated aggregate Bitcoin network hash rate of 100 EH/s as of July 31, 2021. Neither figure is a current network reading.

Hash rate versus difficulty
Hash rate is a rate of attempted calculations. Difficulty describes how challenging it is to find a result that satisfies the network’s proof-of-work target. Difficulty is not a number of hashes per second, and the two terms are not interchangeable.
Bitcoin adjusts difficulty every 2,016 blocks. If blocks have arrived faster or slower than the intended pace, the adjustment changes the challenge for subsequent mining so that block production trends toward an average interval of about ten minutes. Hash rate inferred from difficulty and block timing remains an estimate over a period, not a live count of every machine.
What hash rate does—and does not—tell you
More hashing attempts give a miner more chances over time to find a result that meets the target, much like more attempts in a lottery-like search improve the chance of success without guaranteeing a win in any particular second. A higher network hash rate does not, by itself, mean transactions are processed faster: hashing capacity, block production and transaction confirmation are related parts of proof-of-work operation, but hash rate is not a transaction-throughput metric.
When comparing hash-rate figures, make sure they use the same proof-of-work algorithm and unit. Also check whether each number refers to a device, pool or whole network; whether it is a rated capacity or a network estimate; and, for estimates, the measurement window and observation date. Hash rate alone is insufficient to compare mining profitability.
