Changing Your Wi-Fi Password: What Happens to Your Connected Devices

A Wi-Fi password change disconnects devices that have the old credential saved. Here’s how to reconnect them and what to check before resetting smart-home devices.

Changing your Wi-Fi password disconnects devices that still have the old one saved. Phones, computers, TVs, printers, cameras, speakers and other connected devices will need the new password before they can use the network again. Your router’s administrator password and Wi-Fi security mode are separate settings; changing the Wi-Fi password does not change either one.

What happens when you change the Wi-Fi password?

The router stops accepting the old Wi-Fi credential. Devices that stored it lose their connection until you update their saved network details. Google says all connected devices are disconnected until updated, and Wyze gives the same guidance for its products (Google Home and Nest Help; Wyze Support).

The password change does not automatically reconfigure each device. Some devices let you edit Wi-Fi details in their companion app; others require you to select the network in the device’s settings, forget the saved network and join again, or reset and set up the device. The exact process depends on the product.

How to reconnect your devices

  1. Before changing it, make a device list. Include devices that are easy to overlook or difficult to reach, such as printers, cameras, doorbells, speakers and appliances configured through an app.
  2. Change the password in the router’s management interface. Use the router maker’s app or configuration webpage while you still have access. For example, TP-Link documents changing wireless settings through its web interface or Tether app; names and menu locations vary by model (TP-Link: Steps to Change Wireless Settings on a TP-Link Router; Apple: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points).
  3. Reconnect phones, computers and other devices. Open each device’s Wi-Fi settings, select your network and enter the new password. If the saved profile keeps failing, forget the network and join it again with the new credential.
  4. Use the manufacturer’s setup steps for smart-home products. Update the Wi-Fi details in the product’s app where available. Some Google Home or Nest devices may need to be reset and set up again to join a changed network (Google Home and Nest Help: How to connect your Nest or Home devices to a new Wi-Fi network).
  5. Check devices that remain offline. Confirm the password, then check whether the device supports the router’s Wi-Fi security mode. If the device’s saved network profile is stale, remove it and reconnect.

Extra care for cameras and doorbells

For many Nest cameras and doorbells, Google says retaining the existing network name and password is the simplest way to keep them connected when changing routers. If that is not possible, update the Wi-Fi details using the product’s instructions. A factory reset can remove video history, so check the device-specific guidance before resetting (Google Home and Nest Help: Change camera and doorbell Wi-Fi network).

Changing routers without rejoining every device

When replacing a router, using the same network name (SSID) and password as before can allow previously connected devices to join without being configured one by one, provided the new router’s settings are compatible. Google cautions that an old router still broadcasting that same network can cause confusing connections. Turn off its Wi-Fi or configure it appropriately rather than leaving two active networks with the same name (Google Home and Nest Help).

Wi-Fi password, router login and security mode are different

The Wi-Fi password is what devices use to join the wireless network. The router administrator password controls access to the settings interface. Changing one does not change the other; if the administrator login still uses its default credentials, change it separately in the router’s management settings (Microsoft Support: Wi-Fi network not secure in Windows).

The security mode is another independent setting. The FTC recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, while Microsoft recommends WPA3 when supported. Apple describes WPA2/WPA3 Transitional mode as an option for networks that need to support newer WPA3 devices and older WPA2 Personal AES devices. Older smart-home products may not support every mode, so check the documentation for both the router and the device before changing it (FTC: How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network; Microsoft Support: Wi-Fi network not secure in Windows; Apple: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points).

If something still will not connect

  • Recheck the credential. Make sure you selected the correct network and entered the new password accurately.
  • Forget and rejoin the network. This removes an outdated saved profile that may be preventing reconnection.
  • Check security compatibility. If an older device cannot join after you change the router’s security mode, verify its supported modes in the device documentation. WPA2/WPA3 Transitional may support mixed-age devices in some configurations; compatibility is model-specific.
  • Follow the device maker’s recovery steps. For persistent problems, the maker may recommend resetting the device’s network settings or repeating its setup. Consider possible data loss before resetting cameras or doorbells.

A password change can also be useful if you suspect an unwelcome device has joined your network, but every legitimate device using the old credential will need to be updated (Microsoft Support: Be safer over wireless connections).
