Crypto Wallet Storage: How Hot and Cold Setups Work

Hot wallets keep keys online for convenient transactions; cold wallets keep keys offline to reduce online exposure. Both require secure key and recovery management.

A hot crypto wallet keeps its private keys in an internet-connected environment for convenient access; a cold wallet keeps the keys offline to reduce exposure to online attacks. Neither wallet holds coins in the ordinary sense: crypto assets are recorded on a blockchain, while the wallet manages the keys that control them.

What a crypto wallet stores

A wallet is a way to generate, manage, store or use cryptographic keys—not a container for coins. NIST, quoting ISO 22739:2020, defines a wallet as an application used to generate, manage, store or use private and public keys, implemented in software or hardware. Bitcoin is recorded on its blockchain; a wallet manages the keys that authorize access to it. If you lose the private key or recovery information needed to restore it, you may permanently lose access to the assets it controls.

How hot and cold storage differ

Factor Hot wallet Cold wallet
Key connectivity Private keys are managed in an environment connected to the internet. Private keys are kept offline; signing requires physical human intervention or authentication.
Access Generally more convenient for frequent transactions. Requires additional steps to access and authorize transactions.
Main exposure More exposed to internet-based threats. Less exposed to internet-based attacks, but still vulnerable to physical loss, theft, damage, backup failure and user error.
Examples Desktop, mobile and web wallet applications. A wallet created on an air-gapped computer or a dedicated hardware wallet.

These definitions describe connectivity, not a particular brand or product. A wallet need not be a single physical device to be cold: what matters is that the private keys stay offline. NIST describes a proxy or “warm” wallet as a possible controlled layer for withdrawals, with restrictions such as delays, multisignature approval or amount limits.

Hot versus cold is not the same as self-custody versus custodial

These are separate questions. “Hot” or “cold” describes how keys are connected and handled. “Self-custody” means you control the keys and are responsible for them; with third-party custody, a provider manages access. Either custody arrangement may use hot wallets, cold wallets or a combination. The UK Government distinguishes hosted wallets, where a third party stores or transfers cryptoassets, from unhosted wallets, where the key is administered by the person: cryptoassets: key terms and definitions.

Choosing a setup for everyday use

Use a hot wallet when frequent access matters

An internet-connected wallet can make routine transactions easier, but that convenience comes with greater online exposure. Keep only amounts you need readily available in a hot wallet, and protect the device and account used to access it.

Consider cold storage for holdings you do not need to access often

Cold storage can reduce exposure to online attacks, but it shifts more responsibility to physical security and recovery. A hardware wallet is one possible cold-storage device: NIST describes dedicated hardware wallets as storing private keys and allowing them to be used for signing without revealing them to applications. A device does not make assets invulnerable, and choosing one requires checking supported assets, its setup and recovery process, and current manufacturer information.

Combine the two only if you can manage recovery safely

Bitcoin.org describes using a hot wallet for small spending amounts and cold storage for savings. This is an example, not a universal allocation rule. A split setup is useful only if you can securely maintain the separate keys and backups and understand how to restore access.

Protect keys, recovery phrases and custody arrangements

  • Never share your private key or seed phrase. Anyone who obtains the recovery information may be able to control the assets.
  • Keep recovery information secure and available to you. A phrase exposed to others can defeat the benefit of offline keys; a lost or damaged backup may leave you unable to restore access.
  • Be cautious when authorizing transactions. Cold storage does not prevent a user from approving a fraudulent transaction or exposing a recovery phrase.
  • If using a custodian, investigate its safeguards. Check supported assets, storage practices, security controls, fees and what happens if the provider fails. Custody by a third party changes who manages access; it does not eliminate risk.
  • Account for device and backup risks. Physical wallets and backups can be lost, stolen or damaged. The SEC bulletin notes that hardware devices also have a purchase cost.

For general guidance on wallet types and custody responsibilities, consult the SEC Investor.gov bulletin. It presents SEC staff views and is not a Commission rule or regulation.
