Then compare filing integrations, plan limits, support, and data-handling terms. No software can make incomplete records complete by itself.
Start with complete records, not a vendor’s accuracy claim
For U.S. federal taxes, the IRS says taxpayers with digital-asset transactions should keep records of purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, and dispositions, as well as fair market value when digital assets are received as income or business payment. For a disposal, relevant calculation inputs include the asset, date and time, quantity, fair market value, and basis. The IRS puts the recordkeeping obligation this way: “The Internal Revenue Code and regulations require taxpayers to maintain sufficient records to establish the positions taken on federal income tax returns.” See the IRS digital assets guidance.

That makes import coverage and reconciliation more important than a polished tax-summary screen. An exchange statement or Form 1099-DA is not a complete record of activity across all your wallets and accounts. IRS broker reporting on Form 1099-DA begins for covered dispositions on or after January 1, 2025; software workflows and basis reporting can vary, so confirm how a particular product handles your records rather than assuming an import resolves every gap.
Compare the capabilities that affect your return
| What to compare | Questions to verify |
|---|---|
| Exchange and wallet coverage | Does it connect to every exchange, wallet, chain, and account you used? Can it import historical activity? If an API is unavailable, can you upload a CSV? |
| Reconciliation and corrections | Can you inspect transfers, duplicates, and unmatched transactions? Can you classify activity and correct missing or incorrect cost basis? |
| Cost basis | Does the software support the method and level of identification your situation requires? Can you align settings with exchange reporting and retain them consistently by tax year? |
| Transaction types | Can it process the activity you actually had—such as trades, fees, staking, mining, airdrops, NFTs, DeFi, derivatives, or business activity? Verify coverage against representative records, not just a feature-list label. |
| Reports and forms | Does it produce the jurisdiction-specific forms you need? Can it export transaction-level detail, gains, income, and balances for your own records, a tax professional, or another filing product? |
| Filing workflow | Does it integrate with your filing software, what data is transferred, and is the integration included on your selected plan? |
| Scale and help | What transaction and import limits apply? Which support channels and account-assistance options are included in the plan? |
| Security and access | Review current account permissions, security controls, data-retention policy, and deletion process before connecting accounts. A feature list alone does not establish how a provider protects or retains your data. |
| Geography and complexity | Does it support your country, filing situation, and transaction complexity? U.S. form support does not establish support for another jurisdiction. |
Check that reports match the tax treatment
For U.S. federal reporting, forms depend on the type of activity. The IRS identifies Form 8949 for dispositions of capital assets and Schedule 1 for certain ordinary income related to forks, staking, and mining. Wages, contractor income, gifts, and business activity can follow different reporting routes. Review the IRS’s digital assets guidance and verify that the software’s outputs fit your circumstances; a generic “tax report” label is not proof that every event has been classified correctly.

Ask whether the product provides official forms for your jurisdiction or only supporting data. CoinTracker, for example, says it generates forms and reports from user-provided data, offers country-specific forms in select regions, and provides CSV reports elsewhere. Its U.S. documentation describes integrations with TurboTax and H&R Block. These are documented capabilities of that provider, not a ranking or evidence that its calculations are more accurate than competitors’.
Use transaction-level exports to review the result
A useful export gives you a way to inspect the records behind the totals, share them with a tax professional, or move them into another workflow. CoinTracker documents CSV reports for transaction history, capital gains and losses, income, and end-of-year balances. It says these reports support tax reporting but do not replace official tax forms. Before choosing any provider, check which exports are available, whether they include the fields you need, and whether access depends on a particular plan.

Understand cost-basis settings and their limits
Cost-basis features are not interchangeable. Check which calculation methods are supported, whether the software allows the degree of lot identification your records require, and how it handles transactions spanning multiple exchanges or wallets. Keep the setting and supporting records aligned with the rules that apply to the relevant tax year.

CoinTracker’s U.S. help article says FIFO and Specific Identification are accepted methods for transactions from 2025 onward, and says specific identification must be made at or before the sale. The same vendor article says its software does not offer unit-by-unit identification. This is provider-authored guidance about that product, not a universal rule or independent assessment; consult current IRS guidance or a tax professional if your facts are uncertain.

Compare the actual plan and workflow
Do not assume every feature appears in every subscription tier. CoinTracker’s plans documentation places transaction editing, filing integrations, tax-lot tools, tax-loss harvesting features, and support at different plan levels. For any provider, confirm current transaction caps, import limits, features, and pricing directly on its plan page before subscribing; terms can change.
- List your accounts and activity. Include exchanges, wallets, chains, relevant years, and the types of transactions you made.
- Test coverage and imports. Confirm each source is supported, whether historical data is available, and how to handle missing APIs or CSV records.
- Review reconciliation tools. Check how the software identifies transfers, duplicates, missing basis, and transactions that need manual classification.
- Confirm basis and reporting needs. Match the product’s methods, forms, and exports to your jurisdiction and filing situation.
- Check workflow and plan terms. Verify integrations, transaction limits, support, and the plan features you need.
- Review data controls. Read current permissions, retention, security, and deletion terms before connecting accounts.
What a product comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Product documentation can establish that a vendor says it supports particular imports, reports, integrations, or plan features. It does not establish that the software will classify every record correctly, cover every edge case, or outperform another provider. The available product examples here concern CoinTracker; they are not a complete comparison of the market. Treat any vendor’s coverage claims as a checklist to verify against your own transaction history.
