Neither crypto remittances nor traditional money transfers are automatically cheaper or faster. The meaningful comparison is the total amount the sender pays, what the recipient can actually use after conversion, and when it becomes available through the recipient’s local payout method. A July 2026 Banca d’Italia study found substantial differences between routes and no systematic cost advantage for stablecoin transfers in the routes it tested.
Are crypto remittances cheaper?
Not necessarily. A blockchain transaction fee is only one possible cost in a stablecoin transfer. Buying the token, converting it to local currency, using fiat on- and off-ramps, withdrawing or paying out the funds, and any intermediary charges can all affect the total. A conventional transfer can also cost more than its advertised fee suggests: the exchange-rate spread, provider or agent charges, third-party fees, and applicable taxes may change the recipient’s final amount.

In a July 30, 2026 study, Banca d’Italia mystery-shopped 200 USDC transfers across ten corridors connecting Italy with Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Japan. Total costs in that sample ranged from 0.30% to nearly 9% of the transfer amount. The study found no systematic stablecoin cost advantage; on- and off-ramp costs accounted for more than the on-chain leg. These are results for the study’s routes and transfer size, not a live quote or a prediction for another corridor.

For historical context, U.S. Treasury Assistant Secretary for International Finance Brent Neiman said in 2025 that the average cost of a $200 remittance in 2024 was 6.4%, comprising roughly 2% for foreign-exchange conversion and roughly 4% for service fees. That national-level figure is not a current quote for a particular route or provider.

How much will the recipient actually receive?
Compare the recipient’s expected usable amount, not just the fee shown beside the send button. The exchange rate can have a cost even when a provider advertises a zero transfer fee. The recipient may also face a conversion, withdrawal, or payout charge before the funds are usable in local currency.
For covered U.S. remittance transfers, providers generally must disclose relevant fees and taxes, the exchange rate, the amount the recipient is expected to get, and the date the funds will be available. CFPB guidance warns that a “free” claim can be misleading if other charges apply. In its 2024 Circular 2024-02, the CFPB states: “Remittance transfer providers may be liable under the CFPA for deceptive marketing about the speed or cost of sending a remittance transfer.” Those U.S. disclosure requirements do not establish what providers must disclose in every other country.

Which is faster, and how long until the money is available?
A confirmed blockchain transaction is not the same as local currency the recipient can spend or withdraw. With a stablecoin route, the recipient may still need an exchange or other conversion service, a compliance review, banking-hour processing, and a local payout. On a traditional route, correspondent banks and other intermediaries may add processing steps, cost, and uncertainty about status.

The difference illustrates why payout infrastructure and ramp processing can matter more to delivery time than the speed of the blockchain leg alone.

The Federal Reserve’s March 2026 analysis describes how stablecoins could shorten a correspondent-banking chain under conditions such as low-cost access and ready access for both sender and recipient. It also notes that conversion and bank intermediation may still be necessary. That possible mechanism is not a guarantee of faster delivery for an individual consumer.
What risks and protections should you compare?
Stablecoin and crypto routes
Before choosing a crypto route, establish whether the recipient can receive the specific token and convert it locally, what each ramp and payout step costs, and which company or service holds funds and provides support. The Financial Conduct Authority’s Stablecoin Sprint, updated July 28, 2026, records participant concerns about anti-money-laundering and customer-due-diligence responsibilities, liability across payment chains, and potential smart-contract vulnerabilities. These are issues to check in the particular service and route; they do not establish that every transfer has the same risks.

Usage figures also call for care in describing stablecoins as an established remittance method. The European Central Bank’s November 2025 Financial Stability Review said concrete evidence was lacking that stablecoins were systematically used for remittances and other cross-border transactions. It cited an estimate that around 0.5% of stablecoin volumes were organic retail-sized transfers; this is the review’s reported estimate, not a timeless measure of current use.

Traditional services can involve multiple institutions and fees, but qualifying U.S. consumer remittance transfers have specific disclosure and error-resolution protections. Under the CFPB’s guidance, qualifying consumers generally have up to 30 minutes to cancel before pickup or deposit and 180 days to report an error; providers generally have 90 days to investigate. Eligibility and conditions apply, and these U.S. rights should not be assumed to cover transfers elsewhere or every crypto transaction.

How to compare two real transfer options
Use the same corridor, amount, sender funding method, and recipient payout method for each quote. Otherwise, an apparent price or speed difference may come from comparing different services rather than different payment rails.
- Enter the exact amount and route. Specify the sender’s country, recipient’s country, funding method, and whether the recipient needs a bank deposit, mobile wallet, or cash pickup.
- Record the sender’s total payment. Include the stated transfer charge, funding charge, exchange-rate cost, ramp or conversion costs, payout charges, intermediary costs if disclosed, and applicable taxes.
- Compare the recipient’s proceeds. Note the quoted local-currency amount after conversion and any charge the recipient must pay to access it.
- Check the availability estimate. Ask when funds are expected to be usable through the selected payout method—not only when a provider initiates a transfer or a blockchain confirms it.
- Review recovery and support terms. Check cancellation eligibility, error-reporting process, customer support, custody arrangements, and which provider is responsible at each stage.
- Use current quotes and disclosures. Rates, access, fees, and timing depend on the corridor and can change. Recheck the provider’s terms for the specific transaction before sending.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The clearest direct comparison here is Banca d’Italia’s limited 2026 sample: one transfer size across ten corridors. It establishes that stablecoin remittances do not have a universal cost or speed advantage, and that local payout systems and fiat conversion can shape the outcome. It does not rank all crypto services against all traditional providers, nor settle what a different amount, corridor, or provider will cost today.
For an individual transfer, the useful answer is the live, route-specific quote: total paid by the sender, amount the recipient can use, and expected availability time. Compare those alongside cancellation, error-resolution, custody, and support terms rather than treating the network fee or advertised delivery time as the whole service.
