For unavoidable food scraps, composting is usually the better choice when you have a suitable home setup or an accepted local collection program. It keeps organics out of landfill disposal and can return nutrients and carbon to soil. If composting is not practical or a scrap is not accepted, use the available disposal route—and prevent edible food waste wherever possible.
What makes composting the better option?
In a landfill, food and other organic material break down in oxygen-poor conditions and generate methane. Composting instead manages scraps so they can become a soil amendment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes composting as “nature’s way of recycling.” EPA: Composting

The scale of the U.S. waste problem is significant, but these national figures are not estimates of what one household will save: food made up 24.1% of municipal solid waste sent to landfills, based on EPA’s cited 2018 data. In 2019, the U.S. food retail, food service, and residential sectors generated 66.2 million tons of wasted food, of which 5% was composted. EPA also attributes 58% of landfill methane emissions to wasted food. EPA: Composting
Composting does not make wasting edible food a good idea. Buy, store, and prepare food thoughtfully first; compost is a route for scraps that remain.

Which food-scrap route fits your household?
| Option | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Backyard pile or enclosed bin | You have outdoor space, suitable scraps, and a use for finished compost. | Needs attention to material balance, moisture, and airflow. Home systems generally handle food scraps other than meat, bones, and dairy; check the instructions for your setup. EPA: Composting at Home |
| Vermicomposting | You want a home composting method other than a conventional outdoor pile. | Requires a suitable setup and care. Follow its guidance on acceptable scraps. EPA: Composting at Home |
| Municipal or community collection | You lack space, do not want to maintain a home system, or prefer collection or drop-off. | Programs, accepted materials, and collection rules vary by locality. Check your service’s current instructions. EPA: Approaches to Composting |
| Trash | No suitable composting route is available, or the material is not accepted by the routes you can use. | It is disposal rather than nutrient recovery; organic material in landfills can generate methane. EPA: Composting |
Choose based on five practical questions: Do you have space? Will you do the upkeep? What scraps does the system accept? Is a local service convenient and available? Can you use the finished compost?
How to manage a home compost system
A countertop pail is only a place to collect scraps before they go to a pile, bin, or accepted collection program; it is not itself the composting system. EPA also cautions that some food-scrap appliances produce a dried mixture that can be added to a composting system, rather than finished compost. EPA: Composting at Home

- Odor Control - This kitchen compost bin with lid comes with charcoal filters that trap odors naturally, so food scraps can build up for a full week without any bad smell taking over your kitchen, no matter how close you get to trash day.
- Easy Care - Line the bottom of this small compost bin with newspaper or cardboard to absorb liquid, and drain excess moisture from food scraps before adding them. A quick weekly rinse with water, mild soap, or vinegar keeps things smelling fresh.
For a home pile, EPA suggests two to three parts carbon-rich “browns” to one part nitrogen-rich “greens.” Moisture and oxygen flow matter as well. Monitor moisture, odor, and temperature, and adjust the pile when needed. EPA: Composting EPA: Composting at Home

- Check accepted materials first. Home systems and municipal facilities do not necessarily accept the same scraps. Meat, bones, and dairy are generally outside the food scraps handled by home systems, while local facility rules vary.
- Follow the system’s directions. Do not assume every compost bin or collection service accepts every food scrap.
- Use the finished material appropriately. Compost can benefit soil; if you have no garden or other use for it, a collection program may be a more practical route.
If you do not have space for a compost bin
Outdoor space is not a requirement for diverting scraps where local options exist. Check your city, waste hauler, or community composting service for curbside collection or a drop-off location, then confirm the accepted materials and preparation rules. EPA identifies home, municipal, and community approaches; actual availability is local. EPA: Approaches to Composting

- Unique design keeps bags tucked inside for a neat look
- 1. 75-Gallon/6. 62-Liter capacity perfect for busy kitchens
- Smooth interior makes Bin easy to clean
- Odor-containing and pest-reducing since oxygen can flow through the soft-close lid
- Stay-open lid makes it easy to toss scraps in while you’re working
If neither a suitable home system nor a local collection route is available, trash may be the only practical option for scraps that cannot be used elsewhere. That does not make composting universally effortless or available everywhere: the right answer depends on accepted materials, convenience, and the care a home system requires.
