Crypto jobs and traditional tech jobs overlap in engineering, product, security, data, operations, and marketing, but the available evidence does not show that crypto jobs categorically pay more or are categorically less secure. Crypto hiring reports provide snapshots of postings and role mix; government labor statistics provide defined occupation pay and long-term employment projections. Those measures are not a matched comparison.
What counts as a crypto job—and what counts as traditional tech?
Both sectors hire for familiar functions: software development, product management, data, cybersecurity, design, operations, marketing, and leadership. Crypto employers may also recruit for exchange or stablecoin operations, compliance and legal work, on-chain risk, finance, community and ecosystem roles, and mining or self-custody products. The exact mix depends on the employer; crypto work is not inherently more technical, and not every company hires for every function.

Crypto role mix varies by sample
Bitvocation’s 2025 Bitcoin Job Market Report analyzed 1,801 postings from companies meeting its Bitcoin-focused criteria: Bitcoin-only products, a publicly stated Bitcoin-first commitment, and contribution to the Bitcoin ecosystem. It found that 74% of postings were for non-developer roles. Common non-developer titles included Product Manager, Executive Assistant, and Marketing Manager; frequent developer titles included Senior Software Engineer, Software Engineer, Frontend Engineer, and Full Stack Developer. This is a Bitcoin-company sample, not a measure of all crypto, Web3, or fintech hiring.
A different snapshot points to a different emphasis. CoinGecko and Tiger Research’s H1 2026 analysis counted 2,932 active postings collected through June 18, 2026, from crypto job sites, company career pages, and Korean platforms. Engineering made up 34.1% of that sample, followed by compliance/legal at 10.4%. The report describes a shift toward infrastructure operations and regulatory compliance. It is a manually collected industry sample, not an official census, and excludes DAO contributor roles, freelance work, and contractor arrangements.

Traditional tech is broader than software development
For a defined U.S. comparison, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) groups software developers with software quality assurance analysts and testers in its occupational outlook. Developers design applications or programs; QA analysts and testers identify problems and report defects. BLS says a bachelor’s degree in computer or information technology, or a related field, is typical for entry, though some employers prefer a master’s degree. This is one occupational family, not a description of every traditional-tech job. See the BLS software developers profile.
Do crypto jobs pay more than tech jobs?
The figures available here do not establish a sector-wide pay winner. The crypto reports track postings and job mix, not comparable role-level salary distributions. BLS and UK government figures, meanwhile, cover particular occupations in different labor markets. A credible comparison would match role, seniority, location, date, and compensation type; the available figures do not do that.

Conventional pay benchmarks—and their limits
In the United States, BLS reports a median annual wage of $133,080 for software developers in May 2024 and $102,610 for software quality assurance analysts and testers. BLS defines the median as the point at which half of workers earned more and half earned less. These are U.S. occupational figures, not salary survey results for technology companies or crypto employers. See the BLS wage and outlook data.

For another region and occupation, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s 2025 report, based mainly on 2024 postings, gives a £55,000 median for core cybersecurity jobs and a £48,900 median for wider IT. It describes the cyber figure as 12% above the IT comparator and says three-quarters of core cyber postings did not publish salary information. The report also records an average of 2,698 core cybersecurity postings per month in 2024. These are UK cyber-versus-IT figures, not crypto-versus-traditional software pay. See the UK cyber security skills report.
Compare an offer as a package
When assessing a crypto or traditional-tech offer, separate guaranteed cash from compensation whose value can change. Check the written terms rather than treating a headline total as equivalent to salary:
- Base pay and bonus: identify what is guaranteed, what is discretionary, and when any bonus is paid.
- Equity or tokens: review vesting, dilution, liquidity, lockups, tax treatment, and what happens to unvested or vested compensation if employment ends.
- Benefits and location: include benefits and any costs or restrictions associated with the work location when comparing offers.
- Role and level: compare responsibilities and seniority, not just job titles, which can mean different things at different employers.
The reviewed crypto sources do not quantify a like-for-like token-pay premium or the realized value of token compensation. These checks are offer-evaluation steps, not evidence that tokens are always worth less or carry more risk.

Are crypto jobs riskier?
Hiring volatility is one meaningful difference in the available evidence, but the evidence does not establish that every crypto job is less secure than every traditional-tech job. CoinGecko and Tiger Research report that new crypto postings on major job boards fell roughly 80% year over year in January 2026 and describe restructuring announcements at named firms during the first half of 2026. Those findings capture a period and a selected posting sample; they cannot predict an individual employer’s future.

That is a broad occupational projection, not a promise of job security at a particular company. Traditional tech workers can still face employer-specific layoffs, funding pressures, and changing demand.

Assess a prospective employer as well as its sector. Ask how the role is funded, what business or product need it serves, how the company makes revenue, and whether your responsibilities build skills that transfer to other employers. Public information may not settle runway or team stability, so treat unverified claims as unknown rather than assuming a role is secure.

Remote shares differ by source, geography, and definition, so they should not be read as a global sector comparison. Bitvocation reported that 45% of its 1,801 Bitcoin-focused postings in 2025 advertised remote work. The UK cyber report found that 26% of core cybersecurity postings in its 2024 location data were marked remote or UK-wide. One concerns a Bitcoin-company sample and the other UK cybersecurity postings; neither describes all crypto or traditional-tech jobs.
For a specific vacancy, check which countries or regions are eligible, required time-zone overlap, residency or work authorization, and any office-attendance requirement. “Remote” does not necessarily mean work from anywhere.
How to choose between the sectors
Rather than deciding by the sector label alone, compare the actual role, employer, and offer. The figures above can frame questions, but they cannot determine which individual job is the better choice.
Quick Recap
- Match the work to your skills. Compare day-to-day responsibilities and the experience you will build. Many skills in engineering, product, security, data, and operations transfer across sectors.
- Compare compensation on consistent terms. Put guaranteed cash, bonus, equity or tokens, benefits, and vesting conditions in separate categories. Do not compare a U.S. occupational median with a crypto offer from another region or seniority level as if they were equivalent.
- Check employer and role resilience. Understand the product, revenue model, team mandate, and how the position is funded. For crypto employers, also consider exposure to market cycles and regulatory change; for any employer, consider changing demand and company-specific conditions.
- Assess career progression. Ask what success looks like, who will review your work, what paths exist to greater responsibility, and whether the experience is recognized beyond the current employer.
- Verify work arrangements and benefits. Confirm location eligibility, time-zone expectations, attendance rules, and written benefit details in the actual offer.
