Crypto Custody vs. Self-Custody: Which Is Right for Your Assets?

Self-custody gives you direct control and responsibility for your keys; third-party custody delegates key access to a provider. Compare recovery, security, convenience, and provider risks before choosing.

Choose third-party crypto custody if you prefer a service to manage access to your private keys and are willing to depend on its security, policies, and continued operation. Choose self-custody if you want direct control and can reliably protect your keys and recovery phrase. Neither option is universally safer or better; the right fit depends on how you handle security, recovery, and provider risk.

What custody means—and what a wallet holds

Crypto custody is about how and where you store and access your crypto assets. A wallet generally stores the private keys that authorize transactions, rather than the assets themselves. Whoever controls access to those keys can authorize transactions; losing a key may mean permanently losing access. The SEC explains these basics in its Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors.

In self-custody, you control access to your keys. With third-party custody, an exchange or professional custodian manages and controls access. That distinction—who controls the keys—is separate from whether a wallet is hot or cold.

How the two arrangements compare

Consideration Self-custody Third-party custody
Key control You control access to your private keys. A provider controls access to the private keys.
Security and recovery You are responsible for protecting keys and recovery information and planning for device loss or damage. You rely on the provider’s security, recovery procedures, and continued operation.
Provider failure No custodian is involved, but losing or compromising your wallet access can cause permanent loss. A hack, shutdown, or bankruptcy may leave you unable to access assets.
Convenience and exposure Depends on wallet type and your setup. Hot wallets are convenient for transactions but connected to the internet; cold wallets are generally less exposed to cyberthreats but less convenient. Depends on the provider’s access methods and wallet setup. Hot and cold options exist under both custody arrangements.
Assets, fees, privacy, and asset use Check wallet support and any related service terms; the SEC bulletin does not provide a universal fee or privacy comparison. Review supported assets, fees, privacy practices, and whether customer assets may be lent or commingled; policies vary by provider.

These trade-offs are based on the SEC’s retail investor guidance; the table is a framework for evaluating an arrangement, not a guarantee about any particular wallet or custodian.

When self-custody may fit

Self-custody may suit you if direct key control matters more to you than having a service manage access, and you can maintain a reliable security and recovery process. It also means you are responsible for the consequences of a lost, damaged, or compromised wallet.

  • Be prepared to set up and maintain the wallet yourself.
  • Keep the seed phrase—the recovery phrase that can restore a wallet—secure and private. Never share it.
  • Plan how you would recover access if a device is lost or damaged. A cold device does not remove the need to protect its seed phrase.

A cold wallet is typically a physical device and is generally less exposed to cyberthreats than an internet-connected hot wallet. It is also less convenient for transactions and can be lost, damaged, or stolen. Consider that trade-off before choosing a device; no device eliminates the need for secure recovery planning.

When third-party custody may fit

Third-party custody may suit you if you do not want to manage private keys directly and are comfortable relying on a provider’s processes and terms. That convenience comes with provider dependence: a hack, shutdown, or bankruptcy may affect your access to assets.

Hot versus cold is a different decision

“Hot” and “cold” describe internet connectivity, not who controls the keys. A hot wallet connects to the internet, making it convenient for transactions but exposed to cyberthreats. A cold wallet is typically a physical device and generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but can be less convenient and vulnerable to physical loss, damage, or theft. The SEC notes that hot and cold options can exist under both self-custody and third-party custody.

A practical way to choose

  1. Decide how much control you want. If you want direct control of key access, consider self-custody. If you prefer a provider to manage it, evaluate third-party custody.
  2. Assess your recovery discipline. Be realistic about whether you can protect a seed phrase and maintain a recovery plan, or whether you would rather depend on a provider’s account and recovery processes.
  3. Match the setup to your transaction needs. Consider how often you transact and whether the convenience of an internet-connected wallet is worth its cyberthreat exposure.
  4. Evaluate provider dependence. If considering a custodian, check its key access, security, subcontractors, failure procedures, insurance terms, asset-use policies, privacy practices, supported assets, and fees.
  5. Choose only what you can manage. Self-custody shifts responsibility to you; third-party custody shifts key management to a provider but does not remove the need to understand its risks and terms.

A hybrid arrangement is another possibility to evaluate, but the choice of whether to use one—and how to divide assets—depends on your circumstances. The SEC guidance does not prescribe an allocation or establish that a hybrid approach is right for any particular holder.

U.S. regulatory context: a proposal for advisers and funds

On October 1, 2026, the SEC announced proposed rules and amendments addressing crypto custody by investment advisers and regulated funds. The proposal would allow self-custody in certain circumstances and permit state trust companies to act as custodians subject to conditions. It is a proposal, not a final rule, and its scope is advisers and regulated funds—not guidance telling an individual retail holder which arrangement to choose. See the SEC announcement for its stated scope.
