Crypto cold storage keeps the private keys that authorize transactions offline or otherwise disconnected from the internet. The cryptocurrency remains recorded on its blockchain; a wallet manages the keys that let someone control and spend it. Cold storage is a way to manage those keys, not a place where coins are physically stored.
What cold storage means
A private key is the credential used to authorize a cryptocurrency transaction. Cold storage reduces the key’s exposure to internet-connected systems by keeping it on an offline device or medium. Bitcoin.org describes an offline wallet, also called cold storage, as a wallet kept in a secure place that is not connected to the network. Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance also explains offline transaction signing.

Cold storage is a custody method rather than a single product. It can involve a hardware wallet, a computer kept offline, removable storage, or printed key material. A U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing describes cold storage using examples such as a non-networked computer or electronic device, removable storage, and printed media; that filing illustrates usage in a trust context, not a universal consumer standard. SEC filing 34-99298.
How offline signing works
Funds can be received without bringing the signing keys online. To spend, a typical offline-signing workflow uses an internet-connected device to prepare an unsigned transaction, an offline device to review and sign it, then an online device to broadcast the signed transaction to the network.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Prepare: An online wallet creates an unsigned transaction with the intended recipient and amount.
- Review and sign: Transfer the transaction data to the offline signer using the device’s supported method. Verify the transaction details on the signing device before approving it.
- Broadcast: Return the signed transaction to an online device and send it to the network.
The exact transfer method and verification steps depend on the device and cryptocurrency. Do not assume a workflow supports every asset or network; check the device’s current instructions for the specific transaction. The SEC filing also describes signing on an offline system and a separate approach that moves keys into an online program, which creates additional online exposure.
Cold storage, hot wallets, and self-custody
Cold storage versus a hot wallet
A hot wallet keeps its keys on a device or system connected to the internet, making routine access and transactions convenient. Cold storage aims to keep signing keys disconnected, reducing the chance that an online attacker can reach them directly. The trade-off is a more deliberate spending process and the responsibility to protect and recover the offline keys.

Cold storage versus self-custody
Self-custody means you control the keys or recovery material needed to authorize transactions rather than relying on another party to hold them for you. Cold storage can be one way to practice self-custody, but the terms are not interchangeable: self-custody describes who controls access, while cold storage describes how keys are kept offline.

Common cold-storage methods
Hardware wallet
A hardware wallet is a dedicated device designed for wallet functions and transaction signing. It can provide a practical balance between security and usability, but the label alone does not guarantee safety. Supported assets, networks, recovery methods, signing workflow, and security disclosures differ by model and should be verified before use. Bitcoin.org discusses hardware wallets as an option for savings, while the Bitcoin Developer Guide’s wallet documentation describes their security and usability trade-offs.

Offline computer or signing system
A computer or other signing device that is kept disconnected from the internet can authorize transactions without directly exposing its keys to network access. It requires a reliable way to transfer transaction data in and out, careful verification, and confidence that the system was not compromised during setup or use.
Removable or printed key material
Keys or recovery information may be kept on removable media or recorded physically. Such approaches avoid keeping the material on an online system, but they shift much of the risk to physical protection: a person may steal it, or it may be damaged or destroyed.

Backups and recovery
Cold storage needs a recovery plan, not just an offline device. If a device is lost or broken, access may be restored when a valid backup exists and the user can follow a compatible recovery process. If both the device and the necessary recovery material are lost, funds may become inaccessible. Bitcoin.org recommends planning for backups and notes that a hardware wallet can allow recovery after device loss; recovery still depends on having the correct backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Keep recovery material away from casual access and protect it against theft, fire, water, and other damage.
- Do not photograph or type a recovery phrase on an internet-connected device; doing so can expose it to online compromise.
- Learn and test the recovery process before relying on the setup, following the device’s instructions and taking care not to reveal the recovery material.
What cold storage protects against—and what it does not
Keeping signing keys offline can reduce direct exposure to internet-based attacks. It does not make cryptocurrency risk-free or eliminate mistakes. A device or backup can be stolen, damaged, or destroyed; setup software or hardware may be compromised; recovery material can be exposed; and a user can approve a transaction they misunderstand. Security depends on the whole process, including how the device is set up, how transactions are checked, and how recovery information is stored.

How to choose an approach
There is no universally safest cold-storage setup for every person or threat model. Compare options against the way you will actually use and protect them:
- Key exposure: Does signing require the keys to enter an online environment?
- Signing and transfer: How does transaction data move between the online wallet and offline signer, and can you reliably verify the details?
- Backup and recovery: Can you protect the recovery material and carry out the documented recovery process?
- Physical security: Can you protect the device and backup from theft, damage, and unauthorized access?
- Compatibility: Does the setup support the particular assets and networks you use?
- Convenience: Can you follow the process correctly every time you need to spend?
