The eWolf, a fully electric harbor tug built for Crowley and operating in San Diego Bay, has a 6.2 megawatt-hour (MWh) main propulsion battery. It pairs that stored energy with two electric motors rated at 2,100 kilowatts (kW) each, for 4,200 kW combined. Shoreside charging infrastructure is part of the system that supports its daily work.
How large is eWolf’s battery?
Crowley’s August 2024 specification sheet lists the main propulsion battery at 6.2 MWh. That is an energy-capacity figure: it describes how much energy the battery can store. It is not the same as the tug’s motor power, which is measured in kilowatts.

For scale, the 6.2 MWh figure is the tug’s onboard propulsion-battery capacity; it should not be confused with the capacity of the separate shoreside charging system. Crowley and ABB describe eWolf as capable of completing a full day of work on one charge, with shore-side charging supporting its operating cycle. ABB’s June 2024 account gives the full-day claim, while Crowley’s christening announcement describes the vessel and its charging context.

How powerful is the electric tug?
The specification sheet lists two 2,100 kW electric motors, or 4,200 kW combined rated power. It also lists a maximum speed of 12 knots and a bollard pull rating of 70 short tons. Bollard pull is a measure of towing force—the static pulling force a tug can exert—not the vessel’s weight.
#1 Best Overall
- 2.4GHz High Frequency Control: With advanced anti-interference signal technology, the tugboat operates on a high-frequency band, allowing multiple boats to play simultaneously without any interference.
- Realistic Illumination: Equipped with a rotating searchlight and simulated glowing cabin, this design enhances the overall visual experience and adds a touch of authenticity to adventures on water.
- Dual Propeller Design: Featuring a dual propeller design, the remote control boat ensures smoother navigation and more powerful performance.
- Completely Waterproof: The entire boat is designed to be fully waterproof, eliminating any worries about electrical leaks and ensuring a safer and more durable usage.
- Safety without Switches: Equipped with a bottom water-sensing device, the toy boat only powers on when it touches the water and immediately shuts off when lifted, effectively preventing any potential harm to player.
Crowley describes eWolf’s bollard pull as stronger than that of its conventional predecessor. The 82-foot vessel was built by Master Boat Builders for commercial ship-assist work, rather than as a recreational or consumer boat. The specifications are from Crowley’s August 2024 specification sheet.
Where does eWolf operate, and is it in service?
eWolf was built for the Port of San Diego. Crowley announced delivery in January 2024 and held its christening in June 2024; the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District later reported that the tug was operational in San Diego Bay. It is a working harbor tug, not merely a proposed vessel. Crowley’s June 2024 announcement documents the christening, and the district’s 2024 report describes its operating status.

How does an electric tug recharge between jobs?
The onboard battery is only one part of the operating setup. Crowley’s shore-side charging project includes a microgrid and modular battery storage, along with monitoring and safety systems. The shore installation is distinct from the tug’s 6.2 MWh propulsion battery; the available project descriptions do not state the shore system’s storage capacity.
Crowley says the installation enables daily full-performance electric operation. That means claims about a full working day on one charge should be understood in the context of the designed charging arrangement and eWolf’s harbor-tug work, not as a universal range estimate for other vessels or operating conditions. See Crowley’s description of its shoreside charging project.

- Flexible to Control: The remote control tugboat can move forward, backward, and turn left or right, offering excellent control and flexibility in navigation.
- Long-Lasting Battery Life: Equipped with a 3.7V 600mAh lithium battery, the tugboat can be used continuously for up to 15 minutes on a single charge.
- Wide Control Range: With a 2.4Ghz frequency, the remote control offers a broad control range of up to 50 meters, allowing for a greater sailing experience.
- Waterproof Design: The boat features a sealed waterproof design, ensuring it can withstand splashes and brief immersion in water without any damage.
- Ideal for Outdoor Use: Given its robust construction and long-range control, this remote control tugboat is perfect for outdoor use, providing endless fun at lakes, ponds, or pools.
What do the emissions figures mean?
Crowley’s 2024 specification sheet estimates that, over the first 10 years, eWolf will avoid 178 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx), 2.5 tons of diesel particulate matter, and 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide compared with a conventional tug. These are projected reductions, not independently verified lifetime measurements.
The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District’s 2024 report says eWolf displaced a diesel tug that used 30,000 gallons of fuel annually. That is an agency-reported description of the replaced tug’s use, not a new measurement of eWolf’s annual emissions or a 2026 operating result.
