If CrossDeviceService.exe triggers a “Bad Image” or “The parameter is incorrect” message, first record the complete dialog, any error code and the file path it names. Those details matter: the wording alone does not identify the cause, and available Microsoft documentation does not establish that this exact executable is a Phone Link process or map the parameter message to one specific fault. Work through the low-risk checks below, then choose a recovery option based on when the error began.
Before changing anything, capture the error details
Do not treat the two error wordings as interchangeable diagnoses. Microsoft defines status code 0xC000007B, STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_FORMAT, as a “Bad Image” condition: “{Bad Image} %hs is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” The definition is relevant if that code appears; seeing “Bad Image” without the code does not confirm that status or explain the underlying cause. The exact “The parameter is incorrect” wording has not been tied in the available Microsoft documentation to this executable or a single cause.

- Copy the full message and any hexadecimal code.
- Note the complete file path shown in the dialog, if present.
- Record when it appears: at sign-in, when opening an app, or during another action.
- Note whether it began after a Windows update, app installation, or settings change.
Keep this information for later troubleshooting or support. In particular, the path is useful for determining which file the dialog actually refers to; the filename by itself is not enough to establish where the file came from.

Try these low-risk checks first
1. Restart Windows
Restart the PC and see whether the alert returns during the same action. A one-time message that does not recur calls for a different response than an error that appears consistently. A restart is a check, not proof that the underlying issue has been repaired.

2. Check for Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install updates offered for your device. Restart if Windows asks you to. This is general maintenance; no specific pending update is established as a fix for this CrossDeviceService.exe message.
3. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter if updating fails
If the update check or installation itself has a problem, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the executable error is an update fault. The troubleshooter addresses update problems; it does not diagnose CrossDeviceService.exe.
4. Check whether one app triggers the message
If the error appears only when opening or using a particular app, note that connection. An app-specific symptom makes that app’s repair controls a reasonable next check; it does not, on its own, identify the executable’s origin.

Repair an app only when the symptom points to it
5. Try the app’s Repair option
For a clearly implicated app, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, and choose Advanced options if available. Select Repair when Windows offers it. Not every app exposes these controls, and the available options can vary.
6. Consider Reset only if Repair is unavailable or ineffective
If the app’s Advanced options include Reset, use it only after considering the effect on that app’s data and settings. Reset is app-specific and may remove local app data; it is not a general repair for every error bearing the executable’s name.
Repair Windows system files with Microsoft’s command sequence
7. Open an elevated Command Prompt
Search Windows for Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the prompt. The commands below repair Windows components and protected system files; they are not a targeted repair for a confirmed CrossDeviceService.exe file.

8. Run DISM, then SFC
In the elevated Command Prompt, run the following command and let it finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft’s recommended order is DISM before System File Checker (SFC). DISM uses Windows Update as its repair source by default. If Windows Update is unavailable or broken, Microsoft’s guidance describes using an alternate repair source. Allow each command to complete before closing the window, then restart and check whether the original symptom remains.
Choose recovery based on when the problem began
9. If the error started immediately after a Windows update, consider uninstalling that update
This is a timeline-based option, not a universal fix. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, select the relevant recent update if it is listed, and follow the prompts. Microsoft notes that available recovery options vary; review the update and recovery guidance before proceeding.

10. Check whether System Restore is available
If the issue began after a system change and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore may be an option. Review Microsoft’s recovery guidance and the restore-point details before confirming; this is a distinct recovery choice, not the same operation as uninstalling an update or reinstalling Windows.
11. Consider “Fix problems using Windows Update” for persistent Windows component issues
On supported Windows 11 configurations, go to Settings > System > Recovery and look for Fix problems using Windows Update. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current version of Windows to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every device or configuration.

Reset this PC and reinstalling Windows from installation media are not equivalent to the Windows Update repair reinstall. Their effects depend on the option selected. Microsoft’s recovery guidance warns that a clean reinstall from installation media removes everything. Back up important files and carefully review the selected route and its stated effects before starting.

13. Update Phone Link and Link to Windows if those apps are involved
If Phone Link itself is malfunctioning, check for updates to Phone Link and Link to Windows and follow Microsoft’s Phone Link troubleshooting guidance. Microsoft describes Phone Link on Windows PCs and cross-device features that use it with Link to Windows. That context does not establish that CrossDeviceService.exe is a Phone Link process or that the executable error originates in either app.
14. Escalate with the captured evidence rather than trying risky file fixes
If the message persists, provide the full wording, code, file path, timing, recent changes, and the troubleshooting steps already attempted to Microsoft support or a qualified technician. Do not download replacement DLLs, delete system files, edit the registry, or disable security software as generic fixes for this error; the Microsoft guidance cited here does not recommend those as first-line remedies.
Quick Recap
Which path fits your situation?
| Situation | Most relevant next step | What it targets |
|---|---|---|
| The alert is tied to one repairable app | Try that app’s Repair; consider Reset only after reviewing its effect | That app, if Windows provides the controls |
| Windows system-file corruption is a concern | Run DISM, then SFC | Windows components and protected system files |
| The issue began directly after an update | Consider uninstalling the relevant update | The update associated with the timing |
| System component problems persist and the option is available | Use “Fix problems using Windows Update” | Windows system files and components; Microsoft says apps, files, and settings are preserved |
| A more extensive recovery is being considered | Compare System Restore, Reset this PC, and reinstall routes before proceeding | Effects differ by recovery method and selected options |
| Phone Link itself is also malfunctioning | Follow Phone Link and Link to Windows troubleshooting | The associated apps, not a proven diagnosis of this executable |
