You cannot directly read a cross-origin parent page’s domain or DOM from JavaScript inside an iframe. If the parent cooperates, use window.postMessage() to request and receive only the information you need, while checking the message’s origin, source, and contents. For a page and an iframe, this is the intended cross-origin communication mechanism; document.domain is deprecated.
Why the iframe cannot read its parent
The browser’s same-origin policy restricts what a page can access on a cross-origin Window. An origin is the combination of scheme, host, and port—not merely a domain name—so differences such as HTTP versus HTTPS or a different port make pages cross-origin even when their hostnames look related. See MDN’s same-origin policy overview.

window.parent gives the iframe a reference to its parent window, but it does not grant access to the parent’s properties or DOM across origins. Likewise, a parent can hold a reference to an iframe through its contentWindow, but cross-origin access through that reference remains restricted. See MDN’s iframe documentation.
Use postMessage when the parent agrees to disclose the origin
postMessage() lets cooperating windows exchange messages across origins. The child can send a request to window.parent; the parent can decide whether to respond and disclose a value such as window.location.origin. The value describes the parent’s origin, including its scheme and port when present—not just its hostname.

Use a small message protocol, a specific destination origin, and receiver-side checks. The following illustrates the API; it assumes both parties already know each other’s expected origins and that the parent page has one relevant iframe:
// Child iframe: request only the needed value from its parent.
window.parent.postMessage(
{ type: "request-parent-origin" },
"https://parent.example"
);
// Parent page: accept requests only from the expected child and frame.
window.addEventListener("message", (event) => {
if (event.origin !== "https://child.example") return;
if (event.source !== document.querySelector("iframe")?.contentWindow) return;
if (event.data?.type !== "request-parent-origin") return;
event.source.postMessage(
{ type: "parent-origin", value: window.location.origin },
event.origin
);
});
// Child iframe: accept a reply only from its expected parent.
window.addEventListener("message", (event) => {
if (event.origin !== "https://parent.example") return;
if (event.source !== window.parent) return;
if (event.data?.type !== "parent-origin") return;
const parentOrigin = event.data.value;
// Validate its format and intended use before acting on it.
});
For a real application, define the message type and payload precisely, and validate both before using them. Check event.origin against the expected sender origin and, where applicable, event.source against the expected window. On each send, use the intended recipient’s exact origin as targetOrigin when it is known; do not use "*" as a substitute. The browser API and HTML Standard describe this mechanism, but the protocol and trust decisions belong to the application: MDN: Window.postMessage() and HTML Living Standard: Web messaging.

Parent sends the information
If the parent controls the iframe setup, it can send the minimum necessary value once the child is ready. This avoids an unnecessary request, but the parent still needs to target the intended child and the child must validate the sender.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Child requests the information
If the iframe owns the interaction, it can ask through window.parent. The parent must verify the requester and decide what, if anything, to disclose. A request does not give the child authority to obtain arbitrary parent data.

In either design, account for when listeners are installed, multiple iframes, and navigation. A frame’s origin can change after navigation, so the expected origin and message source should reflect the actual communication you intend to trust. The parent’s iframe reference can be obtained through contentWindow, though the reference does not bypass cross-origin restrictions.
Why document.domain is not the fix
Do not use document.domain as a new cross-origin discovery or communication technique. Its setter is deprecated, can weaken same-origin protections, and does not affect every origin check or work in all contexts. It cannot be set in a sandboxed iframe and may be ineffective with origin-isolation features. MDN recommends postMessage() instead: MDN: Document.domain.

Check sandboxing and the limits of discovery
- An iframe’s sandbox settings can restrict scripts and origin behavior. A sandboxed frame may receive a special origin that fails ordinary same-origin checks unless the relevant sandbox tokens are enabled. Review the actual iframe sandbox configuration.
- Matching a registrable domain is not enough to establish same origin: scheme, host, and port all matter.
- There is no universal, reliable child-side method established here for discovering every ancestor’s origin without cooperation. Do not treat an incidental property or referrer as guaranteed or authoritative.
- Use the parent’s disclosure only for its stated purpose. A message is input from another window, so validate its sender and payload before acting on it.
Practical decision
If you control both pages, implement a narrowly scoped postMessage() exchange and agree on expected origins, message types, and payloads. If you do not control the parent, the iframe cannot force it to disclose its origin or DOM. The safe answer is to request cooperation, not to bypass the browser’s origin boundary.
