If the drive must be built in, options depend heavily on your country and the exact laptop configuration: current examples are limited, while older models may involve trade-offs in performance, support, and seller condition.
Should you buy a laptop with a built-in DVD drive?
Choose a built-in drive if you use discs often and want the convenience of an all-in-one laptop without a separate accessory. The trade-off is a narrower choice of laptops, with availability varying by market. A laptop family name alone is not enough to confirm a drive: manufacturers may sell different configurations under the same name.

If you need a drive only now and then, an external USB DVD writer lets you choose a laptop for its other features and connect the drive when needed. ASUS lists several external optical drives as compatible with Windows 11, including the SDRW-08U9M-U. Its support statement applies to ASUS optical drives manufactured in or after 2020 and their bundled software; it should not be treated as a guarantee for every drive or operating system. Check ASUS’s compatibility details and confirm the exact drive model and connection before buying.
Current built-in DVD-drive options vary by region
Japan-market Dynabook T-series
Dynabook’s fall/winter 2026 T-series specifications list DVD Super Multi drives on T5 and T6 variants, while T7 and T9 variants have Blu-ray drives. These are distinct configurations, not interchangeable descriptions of the whole T-series. Fujitsu FMV Note A77-K3
A 2025 TechRadar report describes the 16-inch FMV Note A77-K3 as including an optical drive and lists a 13th-generation Intel Core i5-1335U, 16GB of DDR5 memory, and a 256GB SSD. That is secondary reporting, not a confirmed local listing. Verify the precise drive format, specifications, and availability with the manufacturer or seller before treating it as an option. Older US models are leads, not assured recommendations
A 2026 Technobezz guide names the HP 17-by1953cl and Lenovo ThinkPad E570 20H50045US as laptops with built-in DVD writers. These are older models, and the guide flags dated processors and seller-dependent availability. It does not establish current stock, condition, warranty, or manufacturer support for a specific listing. Confirm the disc format and task
“DVD drive” does not tell you whether a laptop can read or write every type of disc, or play Blu-ray. Before choosing a built-in or external drive, match its specification to what you actually need:
- CD playback or data access: Confirm that the drive supports CD reading.
- DVD playback or data access: Check that it reads the DVD formats you use.
- DVD creation: Confirm DVD writing support; a drive that reads discs may not write them.
- Blu-ray: Look specifically for Blu-ray support. A DVD Super Multi drive is not a substitute.
The Dynabook configurations illustrate why the distinction matters: T5 and T6 are listed with DVD Super Multi drives, while T7 and T9 have Blu-ray drives.

Compare the complete setup before buying
Do not let the presence of a built-in drive outweigh the condition and capabilities of the laptop. For an older machine, check the processor, memory, display, operating-system support, warranty, and return terms against your needs. For an external writer, check the laptop’s available port, the drive’s connector, and any bundled software requirements.
Compare the total cost of the laptop and external drive with the price and risks of an older laptop that has a drive built in. Practical buying checklist
- Decide whether the drive must be internal. If not, compare current laptops on their core features and add a compatible external DVD writer.
- Name the disc task. Decide whether you need CD reading, DVD reading, DVD writing, or Blu-ray.
- Verify the exact configuration. Check the full model code and manufacturer specifications; do not assume every laptop in a family has the same drive.
- Check local availability. Confirm the laptop and drive are sold in your region, especially for models documented for a specific market.
