Cross-Chain Bridge Risk Assessment: Hyperliquid’s Native Arbitrum Bridge

Hyperliquid’s native Arbitrum bridge relies on validator-mediated withdrawals. Its legacy contract was audited by Zellic, but current deployment-to-audit mapping is not established.

Bottom line: Hyperliquid’s native bridge is a validator-mediated route between Arbitrum and Hyperliquid, not a risk-free or demonstrably trustless transfer. Hyperliquid documentation says its legacy bridge contract was audited by Zellic, whose report also records several issues and contributor-reported fixes. That is useful evidence of review and remediation, but it does not establish that the live contract matches the reviewed code or that later changes were audited.

What bridge this assessment covers

This assessment concerns Hyperliquid’s native bridge for deposits of Arbitrum USDC and withdrawals back to Arbitrum. Hyperliquid’s onboarding documentation describes that route. It does not establish the security of community-built HyperEVM applications, third-party bridges, or other routes to Hyperliquid; those can have different contracts and trust assumptions.

How deposits and withdrawals work

Depositing USDC from Arbitrum

Hyperliquid’s onboarding instructions say to use USDC on Arbitrum and to hold ETH on Arbitrum to pay gas for the deposit transaction. This makes network and asset selection part of the risk: sending the wrong asset or using the wrong network is a user-operation error, distinct from a bridge-contract exploit. Follow the current official onboarding instructions and confirm the selected network and token before signing.

Withdrawing USDC to Arbitrum

Hyperliquid’s exchange API documentation describes a withdrawal request submitted through its exchange endpoint. L1 validators then sign and send the request to the bridge contract. The documentation lists a $1 withdrawal fee and an approximate five-minute finalization time “at the time of this writing.” These are documentation figures, not guarantees or independently verified current terms; check the live documentation and withdrawal details before relying on them.

What users trust when they bridge

Validator authorization and operations

Zellic’s report on the reviewed bridge code says withdrawal and validator-set-change requests require signatures from a two-thirds majority of validators, followed by a dispute period before finalization. This is a validator authorization model: cryptographic signatures show that authorized keys approved a request, but do not make the process trustless. Hyperliquid documentation separately says its active validator set consists of the top 24 validators by stake. The sources here do not quantify how concentrated current stake is.

That design makes validator key security, availability, possible collusion or censorship, and incident response relevant to bridge risk. Hyperliquid staking documentation defines a staking quorum as more than two-thirds of total network stake. That is a separate statement about staking quorum; it should not be conflated with Zellic’s description of the bridge request threshold.

Contract correctness and changes

An audit assesses a defined code scope and version; it can reduce uncertainty but cannot rule out defects or prove that deployed code is identical to reviewed code. Hyperliquid’s audit index calls the Zellic-reviewed contract the legacy bridge. The materials available for this assessment do not establish how the current Arbitrum deployment maps to that contract, what its upgrade history is, or whether later changes received additional audit coverage. Those gaps prevent a definitive present-day code-level rating.

Wallet, network, and broader cross-chain risks

  • Wallet keys: A compromised key can put assets at risk independently of bridge validators or contract security. Hyperliquid support says unauthorized activity may indicate key compromise and recommends abandoning the compromised address and moving remaining assets.
  • Transaction setup: Choosing the wrong network or asset can cause loss or recovery difficulties even if the bridge contract works as intended. Check the network and token before confirming a transaction.
  • Cross-chain behavior: Ethereum.org’s general bridge guidance identifies smart-contract, systemic financial, counterparty, congestion, attack, and state-rollback risks. Which risks matter most depends on how a particular route verifies transfers and handles delays or emergencies.

What Zellic reported—and what that does not prove

Zellic’s report describes findings in the code it reviewed and records fixes attributed to Hyperliquid contributors. The report says a pending operation could survive a pause and validator rotation, potentially remaining executable after unpausing. It says the issue was acknowledged and a fix was implemented in commit 8c4a182a. This is a historical finding with a reported remediation, not evidence by itself that the same issue is present in, or absent from, the current deployment.

The report also describes other issues: a missing check for an existing withdrawal request that could enable griefing through finalization; signatures that did not include the contract or token address, creating maintenance or replay risk if logic were reused; and unchecked return values from transferFrom. It lists contributor remediation commits for those issues. A reported commit is evidence of a code change, not independent confirmation that the fix is deployed or that the relevant live contract was re-audited.

Hyperliquid’s audit index states that its legacy bridge contract was audited by Zellic. Read that claim with its scope intact: it establishes an audit statement about the legacy contract, not that every current bridge component or upgrade is audited, that deployment correspondence has been verified, or that the bridge cannot fail.

How to assess a bridge route before using it

For Hyperliquid or any alternative route, compare the specific route rather than relying on the word “bridge.” Useful questions include:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Who verifies transfers? Identify the validators, signers, or other verification mechanism, and what threshold authorizes a withdrawal.
  • What code is actually deployed? Check whether authoritative contract addresses and upgrade history map the deployment to a reviewed version, and whether audits cover later changes.
  • How long does finalization take, and what does it cost? Confirm current fees and timing in the relevant official documentation and transaction flow; published figures can change and are not guarantees.
  • Which networks and assets are supported? Confirm the exact source network, destination network, and token for the route you intend to use.
  • What happens during an emergency? Look for pause behavior, pending-operation handling, validator rotation procedures, and a clear recovery process.
  • What remains your responsibility? Use a secure wallet, verify transaction details, and treat phishing or key compromise as risks separate from bridge code.

For this native route, the central unresolved verification question is whether the currently deployed Arbitrum contract and its upgrade history correspond to the Zellic-reviewed legacy code and its reported fixes, and whether subsequent changes have audit coverage. Without authoritative current deployment and audit mapping, the available audit statement supports a limited historical conclusion—not a blanket safety rating.
