1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA reliable CRM and live chat integration starts with deciding which system owns each record, what information agents need, how conversations should be routed, and what should be recorded after a chat. Map those decisions before enabling sync; the connection itself cannot resolve conflicting ownership, duplicate identities, or unclear follow-up rules.
Start with the support workflow, not the connector
Write down what the integration must accomplish. Common goals include showing customer context inside the agent workspace, routing chats to an account owner or support queue, creating follow-up records, and making interaction data available for reporting. Each goal can require different objects, fields, permissions, and sync behavior.

Define the lifecycle of each record before setup:
- Customer and account attributes: Decide whether the CRM or support platform is authoritative for identity, company details, and other customer attributes.
- Conversation and ticket status: Decide which application owns the state of an active support interaction and how its final outcome will be represented elsewhere.
- Record-creation events: Specify when a chat should create or update a lead, case, task, or ticket—and when it should not.
- Routing ownership: Decide whether assignment follows an account owner, issue or product queue, or general support queue.
Do not assume an integration is two-way just because data is visible in both products. Sync direction may differ by object or field. Zendesk documents a one-way Salesforce-to-Zendesk sync for Salesforce accounts to Zendesk organizations and Salesforce contacts or leads to Zendesk users. Intercom lets administrators choose directions for mapped attributes. Treat each object and field as its own data-flow decision.

| Platform | Documented CRM connection and data flow | Agent context and workflow actions | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zendesk with Salesforce | One-way Salesforce-to-Zendesk account-to-organization and contact/lead-to-user sync; separate ticket-to-Salesforce-case sync is documented. | Salesforce details can appear in the Zendesk ticket sidebar; Zendesk ticket information can be visible to Salesforce users. | Do not infer that all objects or fields sync in both directions. See Zendesk Salesforce integration setup and ticket sync guidance. |
| Intercom with Salesforce | Mapped attribute directions can be selected; matching can use identifiers such as email or customer number. Account/company sync matches existing Intercom objects rather than creating them. | Salesforce lead, account, contact, and opportunity context can appear in the inbox; agents can create leads or cases and send conversations as tasks. | Existing-record requirements and matching rules matter. See installation guidance, data sync guidance, and Salesforce account connection details. |
| HubSpot with Salesforce | Salesforce sync supports contacts, companies, deals, activities, and other supported data. | Supported data can be synchronized for CRM use; the cited documentation does not establish the same inbox context or chat-routing functions described for Intercom and Zendesk. | Subscription eligibility varies by HubSpot product tier. See HubSpot Salesforce integration requirements. |
Build a field map before turning on sync
A written mapping prevents a connector’s defaults from silently becoming your support policy. For every field, capture its source, destination, data type, direction, matching rule, and intended use. Include the record object as well as the field; a contact-to-user mapping and a ticket-to-case workflow are different decisions.
| Mapping decision | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Source and destination | The application, object, and field that send or receive the value. |
| Authority and direction | Which system is authoritative, and whether the field moves one way or in a selected direction. Document exceptions per field. |
| Data type | Confirm the source and destination types are compatible; Intercom’s documentation explicitly requires compatible mapped attribute types. |
| Identity matching | Choose the identifier, such as email or customer number, and define what happens when it is missing, duplicated, or changed. |
| Purpose | State whether the value supplies agent context, routing, follow-up, or reporting. Leave out fields with no defined use. |
Intercom’s documented account/company sync expects the corresponding records to already exist in Intercom; it matches existing objects rather than creating them. That is a consequential setup constraint: test object availability and identity matching before expecting a CRM record to appear in the inbox.
Give agents useful context without clutter
Put the information agents need to identify the customer and act on the issue in the inbox or ticket workflow. A practical context panel can include identity and account, record owner, service tier if your organization uses one, open case or ticket status, and relevant recent interaction history. This is a configuration checklist, not a claim that every connector supplies every field automatically; confirm field availability, mappings, and permissions in your environment.

Intercom documents Salesforce lead, account, contact, and opportunity context in its inbox. Route chats to the right person or queue
Translate the support team’s actual queues into routing rules. A chat about an existing account may go to its owner; product or issue categories may go to specialist queues; unclassified requests need a general-support fallback. Routing should account for agent eligibility as well as assignment logic—an intended recipient who is unavailable or ineligible can leave a conversation unhandled.
- Account ownership: Route known customers to the account owner where that supports the service model.
- Issue or product: Route by topic when different teams handle different products or problem types.
- Fallback: Specify a staffed general queue for unknown identities, missing ownership, or unrecognized topics.
- Handoffs: Decide how an agent transfers a conversation when the initial assignment is wrong, and test that the next team receives the context it needs.
Intercom documents routing to an account owner or the appropriate sales or support team. Zendesk documents messaging-ticket routing through triggers, chat rules, or omnichannel routing. Salesforce’s Lightning chat documentation describes Omni-Channel routing. These are platform-specific mechanisms, not interchangeable settings. Salesforce Help stated that legacy Chat would be retired on February 14, 2026; that date has passed. Its guidance points to enhanced Chat, formerly Messaging for In-App and Web. Consult current Salesforce migration documentation before planning a new or migrated deployment: Salesforce Help: Legacy Chat retirement.
Choose what each conversation should create or update
Decide the destination record for each meaningful support outcome rather than automatically creating a new CRM record for every chat. Intercom documents creating Salesforce leads and cases and sending conversations as tasks. Zendesk documents syncing tickets to Salesforce cases for reporting and workflows. The correct choice depends on what the team needs to follow up, report, or hand off.

- No new record: Keep routine or duplicate interactions from generating records that do not serve a defined workflow.
For each chosen action, map the fields needed for ownership, status, issue context, and reporting. Avoid creating a lead or case by default unless the team has explicitly decided that every conversation belongs in that object; unnecessary record creation can clutter the CRM.

Check access and technical prerequisites
Before installation, confirm the requirements for both applications and the specific objects being synced. These may include an administrator account, CRM edition or API access, object read/write permissions, and plan eligibility. Requirements vary: Intercom’s Salesforce installation guidance lists administrator access and Salesforce permissions for API and read/write access to synced objects; Zendesk documents administrator and edition/API requirements; HubSpot’s Salesforce connector has subscription eligibility that varies by product tier.
Use the vendor setup pages for the current prerequisites: Intercom Salesforce installation, Zendesk Salesforce integration setup, and HubSpot Salesforce integration. Product editions, API access, and permissions are changeable; check the relevant pages for the account and edition being configured.
Test in a sandbox before launch
Use a Salesforce sandbox or a test workspace when available, and back up Salesforce data before account/company sync. Intercom recommends sandbox testing and backing up Salesforce data before that sync; Zendesk’s ticket-sync guidance also addresses sandbox and field-mapping considerations.
- Prepare representative test records. Include a new identity, a known matching identity, a duplicate identifier, and a record with missing mapped fields.
- Verify matching and sync direction. Confirm the intended destination record is selected and changes travel only in the configured direction for each field.
- Test ownership changes. Change an account owner and confirm that routing behaves as intended rather than sending a chat to a stale owner.
- Exercise routes and fallbacks. Test a known account, each important queue, an unknown or unclassified request, and an unavailable or ineligible agent.
- Check record actions. Confirm that a conversation creates or updates the chosen lead, case, task, or ticket—and that a conversation designated not to create a record does not do so.
- Review agent context. Confirm the mapped fields appear in the expected inbox or ticket view and are readable by the agents who need them.
- Check reporting fields. Validate that ownership, status, and other required values arrive in the destination used for reports and workflows.
Monitor the integration after release
After launch, review sync failures, duplicate records, routing misses, missing agent context, and whether resulting support records work in reports and downstream workflows. Zendesk provides logging and troubleshooting resources for its Salesforce integration, and its ticket sync supports Salesforce reporting and workflows. Set an operational review cadence that fits your team’s volume and risk; vendor documentation does not establish a universal monitoring interval or benchmark.

How to choose the right integration design
Evaluate the actual workflow rather than treating a connector as a single on/off feature. Before committing to a design, compare:
- Compatibility with the CRM and support or chat platform already in use.
- Objects and fields supported, with sync direction recorded for each.
- Update timing and triggering behavior, where documented for the connector.
- Matching identifiers and behavior for missing, duplicate, and unmatched records.
- Agent context available inside the inbox or ticket view.
- Ownership-aware and queue-based routing controls, including fallback behavior.
- Whether conversations can create or update the leads, cases, tasks, or tickets the team uses.
- API, edition, subscription, administrator, and object-permission prerequisites.
- Sandbox access, logs, and a recovery or rollback plan.
- Whether the mapped data supports the reports and workflows the support organization actually needs.
There is no universal winner implied by these capabilities. Zendesk’s documented Salesforce connection distinguishes one-way customer/account sync from ticket-to-case sync; Intercom documents selectable attribute directions, record matching, inbox context, routing, and Salesforce record actions; HubSpot documents Salesforce sync across supported CRM data. Select the design whose documented data flow and agent workflow match the team’s requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is CRM and live chat integration?
It is a configured connection between a customer relationship management system and a live chat or support workspace. Depending on the platform and setup, it can display CRM context to agents, move selected fields, route conversations, or create support and follow-up records.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should CRM and live chat data sync both ways?
Not necessarily. Sync direction can vary by platform, object, and field. Define the authoritative system and direction for each mapped value; do not assume that data visible in both applications means every record synchronizes bidirectionally.

What customer information should agents see?
Start with identity and account, ownership, an applicable service tier, open case or ticket status, and relevant recent interactions. Show only fields that support identification, routing, or handling the issue, and confirm they are available and permitted in the agent workflow.
Should every chat create a CRM case or lead?
No universal rule fits every team. Create or update a record when the conversation needs follow-up, support ownership, sales action, or reporting; avoid automatic record creation for interactions that do not serve a defined workflow.
Can a CRM integration route chats to an account owner?
Some documented platform workflows support this: Intercom describes routing to an account owner or appropriate sales/support team. Routing options differ by platform, and teams should test agent eligibility, missing ownership, and fallback queues.
How should a team test a CRM and chat integration?
Test new and existing identities, duplicate or missing identifiers, ownership changes, route fallbacks, record creation decisions, agent visibility, and reporting fields in a sandbox or test workspace before enabling production sync.
Does integrating chat with a CRM guarantee faster support or higher satisfaction?
No outcome guarantee is established by the platform setup documentation. Integration can make selected context and records available across workflows, but results depend on configuration and how the team uses them.
