At online checkout, people often mean the three- or four-digit security code printed on the card. That code is only one verification method: address checks, account checks, and identity challenges such as 3-D Secure are separate. None of these checks is the same as authorization, which is the issuer’s decision on whether a transaction can proceed.
What does credit card verification mean?
The phrase has more than one meaning in payment processing. In a narrow checkout context, it usually means validating the card verification code printed on the payment card. PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) describes it as a card verification code or value; names include CVV2, CVC2, CID, and CAV2, depending on the payment brand. It is usually three or four digits. Visa, for example, describes CVV2 as three digits on the card’s signature panel. PCI SSC explains when merchants may request the code.

In a broader sense, verification may also refer to checking whether an account is active, whether a billing address or name matches issuer records, or whether the cardholder can complete an authentication challenge. These checks provide different kinds of information; a match on one does not establish all the others.

What is the card security code, and why is it requested?
The printed code is primarily used in card-not-present transactions, such as online, mail-order, or telephone purchases. A merchant may ask for it to help check that the customer has access to the card’s details. The code is sensitive authentication data, not a PIN or a one-time passcode sent by a bank.

- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. Don’t become a victim e-theft in our growing contactless society. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block all RFID and NFC signal to secure your details and have peace of mind.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: A large working distance of 2.4” provides complete protection for your whole wallet. Cards 1.2” either side of the card will be fully secure from e-pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
When a transaction is processed, the submitted code can be validated by the issuer, or by the payment network acting for the issuer. Visa’s technical documentation describes recalculating the value with issuer-provided cryptographic keys and comparing it with the submitted value. A successful match is a signal for the payment decision, not proof of the user’s identity and not a guarantee that the purchase will be approved. Visa Developer describes CVV2 validation and related account checks.
How do verification methods differ?
| Method | What it checks | Who or what performs the check | Does the customer usually act? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card verification code (CVV2/CVC2 and related names) | Whether the submitted printed security code matches the card’s value | The issuer, or the payment network acting for the issuer | The customer enters the code at checkout |
| Address Verification Service (AVS) | Submitted billing street and postal information against the address on file | Issuer or payment service, depending on the flow | Usually no extra challenge beyond providing billing details |
| Account Name Inquiry (ANI) | Supplied name information against issuer records, where supported | Issuer or payment service, depending on the flow | Usually no separate challenge |
| Account verification | Account or payment-account status, depending on the service | Issuer or payment service | Often a background check |
| EMV 3-D Secure authentication | Whether the cardholder can be authenticated for the transaction | The merchant initiates the flow through a 3-D Secure network; the issuer assesses risk | Not always: lower-risk transactions may pass frictionlessly, while others can prompt for a one-time password or biometric confirmation |
Visa presents account verification, AVS, ANI, and CVV2 validation as distinct services, rather than interchangeable names for one check. Availability and handling can differ among payment networks, issuers, merchants, and regions. Visa outlines its cardholder-information verification methods; its developer documentation discusses checks and issuer responses.

Is verification the same as authentication or authorization?
No. These terms describe different parts of payment processing:
- Verification checks a particular detail or signal, such as the security code, billing address, name, or account status.
- Authentication checks whether the cardholder is who they claim to be. A 3-D Secure flow may do this in the background or ask the customer to confirm using a one-time password or biometric.
- Authorization is the issuer’s decision to approve or decline the transaction, considering factors such as funds, account status, and risk.
Visa describes a broader transaction lifecycle as authentication, authorization, clearing, and settlement: clearing exchanges transaction details among participants, and settlement transfers funds between the issuer and acquirer. Passing a verification or authentication check does not itself authorize a purchase. Visa’s 3-D Secure guide explains the authentication flow and lifecycle.

Can a merchant keep the security code for later?
No. PCI SSC classifies card verification codes and values as sensitive authentication data and prohibits storing them after authorization, even if encrypted. Customer permission does not make post-authorization storage permissible under PCI DSS. The code is not needed for card-on-file or recurring transactions after authorization. PCI SSC addresses card-on-file and recurring transactions. Its explanation of the post-authorization rule also describes why this data must not be retained.

What should you do when a checkout asks for verification?
- Enter the printed security code only in a payment flow you trust and only for the transaction that needs it.
- Expect a bank app prompt, texted one-time code, or biometric request to be an authentication step such as 3-D Secure—not the printed card code.
- If a merchant asks to save the printed code for future or recurring charges, do not provide it for that purpose; merchants must not retain it after authorization.
