Credit card processing fees are the merchant’s cost of accepting a card payment. The amount may appear as one bundled rate or as several statement lines. In the United States, the total generally reflects network-set interchange, network assessment fees and the payment provider’s markup, with possible account, batch, PCI-compliance or chargeback charges added under the merchant’s contract. The right way to judge an offer is to model your own card mix, sales channels, ticket size and monthly volume—not to rely on one “typical” percentage.
What does a credit card processing fee include?
A merchant usually pays its acquiring bank or payment provider a merchant discount or processing charge. That price can combine several underlying costs. Mastercard describes interchange as one component of the merchant discount rate (MDR), while Visa distinguishes the interchange transfer between acquiring and issuing banks from the merchant discount paid to the merchant’s financial institution. Square’s U.S. overview likewise describes an MDR as including interchange, assessment fees and payment-service-provider fees.

| Charge or component | What it means | How it may appear |
|---|---|---|
| Interchange | A network-established transfer generally paid by the acquirer to the card issuer. The card product and transaction qualification affect it. | Passed through inside a blended rate, listed in an interchange-plus schedule, or shown in detail on a statement. |
| Assessment, dues or network fees | Charges associated with using a card network. They are conceptually separate from issuer interchange. | Bundled into a provider rate or itemized as network assessments, dues or similar lines. |
| Processor or acquirer markup | The provider’s charge for authorization, settlement, risk controls, reporting and other acceptance services. | A percentage, a per-transaction amount, a monthly fee, or a combination. |
| Other contract fees | Possible charges such as chargeback handling, PCI-compliance programs, account maintenance, batch processing or monthly service. | Separate line items, occasional charges or an amount included in a subscription. |
Not every provider charges every item, and a provider may treat a category differently from another provider. Match each line on a statement to the fee schedule and agreement that govern your account.
What is interchange, and who gets that fee?
Interchange is not normally a fee that a merchant negotiates directly with the card issuer. It is a transfer between the acquiring side—the bank or institution serving the merchant—and the issuing bank that provided the customer’s card. The acquirer then charges the merchant a merchant discount or processing price that also covers network costs and the provider’s own services.

That distinction matters when comparing quotes. A salesperson may describe a rate as “interchange plus,” “cost plus” or “bundled.” In an interchange-plus arrangement, the underlying interchange and network costs are passed through and the provider adds a stated markup. In a bundled arrangement, several costs are combined into one headline percentage and transaction fee. Neither label, by itself, proves which offer will cost less for your business.
Why is one card transaction more expensive than another?
Networks qualify transactions according to details about both the merchant and the payment. Mastercard identifies merchant category, the time between authorization and clearing, whether magnetic-stripe data was used, enhanced transaction data and merchant sales or transaction volume among qualification factors. Square also notes that card type, transaction channel, transaction amount and merchant category can change the cost.
Channel and data quality
In-person card-present payments generally qualify differently from online, keyed or other card-not-present payments. A keyed entry, a payment link and an e-commerce checkout can therefore carry different provider prices even when the card and purchase amount are identical. Delays between authorization and clearing, missing enhanced data or a transaction that does not meet a network’s qualification rules can also change the underlying cost.

Card product and purchase details
Rewards, commercial and other card products can have different interchange categories. The merchant category code, sale amount, card-present status and the data submitted with the authorization all influence qualification. Your statement may therefore show a range of effective rates during the same month rather than one fixed percentage.
Volume and contract terms
Monthly sales volume can affect the markup a provider offers, while the number and size of transactions determine how strongly per-transaction charges affect your effective rate. Mastercard says its interchange schedules are generally updated twice a year; a provider can also change its own pricing under the agreement. Check the effective date and notice provisions whenever a rate changes.
How do bundled and interchange-plus pricing compare?
These are the two broad structures merchants encounter. A third variation is a subscription or membership model that combines a recurring fee with lower transaction pricing. Compare the complete schedule rather than only the advertised percentage.

| Pricing structure | How it is calculated | Potential advantage | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bundled or flat rate | One percentage and often one fixed amount for a defined channel, sometimes covering network and provider costs. | Simple forecasting and fewer statement lines. | Whether online, keyed, invoice and premium-card transactions use different rates; account and incidental fees. |
| Interchange-plus | Actual interchange and network costs plus a stated provider percentage and/or per-transaction markup. | Greater transparency and a chance to benefit from well-qualified, high-volume transactions. | Every markup, minimum, assessment, pass-through fee and the method used to classify transactions. |
| Subscription or membership | A recurring monthly charge paired with transaction pricing that may be lower than a basic bundled plan. | Can suit a predictable, higher-volume pattern. | Break-even volume, monthly minimums, cancellation terms and which services the subscription includes. |
Square advises calculating expected costs for your own business profile: a lower per-transaction price with a monthly fee can fit one low-volume pattern, while a higher per-transaction price with no recurring fee can fit another. There is no single structure that is cheapest for every merchant.
What do current U.S. provider prices look like?
The following figures are a dated Square example, not an industry average or a universal processing rate. They apply to its U.S. free tier as described in its educational pricing article. The in-person figure was updated February 25, 2025; the article’s online, Payment Link and manually entered figures were accessed October 11, 2026. Provider prices can change, so verify the live schedule before signing up.
| Transaction type | Published rate | Illustrative fee on a $100 sale |
|---|---|---|
| In-person, card-present | 2.6% + 15¢ | $2.60 + $0.15 = $2.75 |
| Online | 2.9% + 30¢ | $2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20 |
| Payment Link | 3.3% + 30¢ | $3.30 + $0.30 = $3.60 |
| Manually entered or card-not-present | 3.5% + 15¢ | $3.50 + $0.15 = $3.65 |
Fixed cents matter most on small tickets. At the 2.6% plus 15¢ example rate, a $10 in-person sale would incur 26¢ plus 15¢, or 41¢—an effective 4.1% before any other account charges. A $100 sale at the same schedule is 2.75%. These calculations illustrate how ticket size changes the effective percentage; they do not establish a market-wide rate.

How should you read a processing statement?
- Identify the billing period and account. Confirm that the statement covers the same merchant location, channels and dates as the sales report you are using.
- Separate volume from fees. Record gross card sales, transaction count, refunds and chargebacks. A percentage cannot be evaluated without the sales base and number of transactions.
- Group each line by function. Mark lines as interchange, network assessment, processor markup, recurring service or incidental fee. Ask the provider for a legend when a code is unclear.
- Check channel and card mix. Compare in-person, online, keyed, invoice and payment-link activity separately. Look for card-present versus card-not-present classifications.
- Calculate the effective rate. Divide total processing charges for the period by card sales for that period, then analyze the fixed per-transaction and monthly amounts separately. Include refunds and chargeback costs according to the method used in your contract.
- Match the result to the agreement. Verify the advertised percentage, cents-per-transaction amount, monthly minimums, notice clauses and any pass-through schedule. A mismatch may be a classification issue, a new network schedule or an unauthorized fee.
How do you compare payment processor fees?
Use the same transaction profile for every quote. Prepare a representative month showing sales by channel, transaction count, average ticket, card-present versus card-not-present share, card types, refunds and any recurring services you need. Then request a complete fee schedule rather than a single rate.
- Percentage charges: Record the rate for each channel and card category that applies to you.
- Per-transaction charges: Multiply the fixed amount by your actual transaction count; it can dominate costs for small tickets.
- Recurring charges: Include monthly account, gateway, software, statement or subscription fees.
- Incidental charges: Ask about chargebacks, retrieval requests, PCI programs, batch fees, minimums and termination charges.
- Included services: Note whether the price includes a virtual terminal, invoicing, reporting, fraud tools or support that you would otherwise buy separately.
- Contract terms: Check term length, rate-change notice, funding timing, reserves and cancellation conditions.
Run the same sales profile through each offer and compare total dollars, not just the nominal percentage. Test a low-volume month, a normal month and a high-volume month if your sales fluctuate. This reveals whether a recurring fee or a higher per-transaction charge is driving the result.
What other fees should you look for?
Possible statement lines include chargeback fees, PCI-compliance or non-compliance fees, account or annual fees, batch fees, gateway fees, monthly minimums and equipment or software charges. The presence, amount and naming of each item depend on the provider and contract. Do not assume that a line is unavoidable because it appears on one processor’s statement.
Best Value
When a new fee appears, ask for four details: the contractual clause authorizing it, the date it became effective, whether it is recurring or one-time, and which transactions or services trigger it. Compare the answer with the written schedule and retain the statement showing the change.
Can you pass credit-card processing fees to customers?
A surcharge is an extra amount applied to a customer’s credit-card purchase. U.S. network rules impose notice and disclosure requirements, and applicable state or federal law can add restrictions. Visa says a merchant must notify its acquirer 30 days before beginning to surcharge.
Mastercard’s U.S. guidance describes advance notice to Mastercard and the acquirer, clear disclosure to customers, a surcharge tied to the merchant’s acceptance cost and a 4% maximum under its rules. It also excludes Mastercard debit and prepaid cards from the surcharge program. These are network requirements, not a blanket nationwide legal permission. Rules vary by jurisdiction and can change.
- Ask your acquirer which card types and locations are eligible.
- Submit any required network notice before charging customers.
- Confirm current state and federal requirements with qualified legal or compliance advice.
- Display the surcharge clearly at the point of entry and on the receipt, using the wording and rate your acquirer approves.
- Configure the point-of-sale system so debit and prepaid transactions are not surcharged where prohibited.
What is a “typical” credit card processing fee?
There is no single reliable percentage that describes every U.S. merchant. Your effective cost depends on channel, card mix, ticket size, merchant category, qualification data, volume, provider markup and recurring or incidental fees. A headline rate from one provider—such as the dated Square examples above—cannot be treated as an industry average.
The most useful benchmark is your own effective cost by channel: total fees divided by card sales, with transaction count and recurring charges shown separately. Compare that result with complete offers built from the same sales profile, and investigate any unexplained statement line before switching providers.
Quick Recap

- Have you included fixed cents-per-transaction charges in your calculation?
- Did you account for monthly, PCI, chargeback, batch and other contract-specific fees?
- Are the quoted figures labeled by country, plan, transaction type and effective date?
