Control D Not Working? Troubleshoot DNS, Connectivity, and Filtering Problems

A practical guide to Control D troubleshooting: determine whether DNS is failing, compare the browser and system resolver paths, check VPN conflicts, and fix profile or filter issues.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking whether DNS is actually failing or whether only Control D’s browser verification is failing. Open the Control D Status Page in the affected browser, note its result, and try an ordinary website or another app. A browser check, a command-line lookup, and an Activity Log each show a different DNS path, so a result from one does not prove that every app or device is using the same resolver.

The fastest way to narrow this down is to identify the scope: do ordinary lookups fail, does only one browser report a problem, does behavior change when a VPN connects, or do sites load but filtering is wrong? Match the symptom to where Control D is configured before changing settings. A browser setup, an operating-system setup, a router setup, and the Control D app or ctrld daemon do not all affect the same traffic.

First, identify what is failing

“Control D not working” can describe three different problems: ordinary DNS or internet access is failing; a browser is not using the DNS path you intended; or DNS works but filtering is not producing the expected result. Separating these cases avoids changing settings at the wrong layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the Status Page result

  • Using Control D: the browser check detected a Control D resolver for the path used by that browser.
  • Not using Control D: the check completed but did not detect a Control D resolver for that browser path.
  • Unable to verify: browser verification did not complete successfully. This result alone does not establish that DNS is broken or that Control D is not being used.

Next, visit an ordinary domain or try another app. If those work, investigate the browser’s resolver path or verification before treating the issue as a general DNS outage. If ordinary lookups also fail, check connectivity and the DNS settings for the device’s deployment method.

Control D’s Status Page documentation summarizes the distinction plainly: “Unable to verify means browser verification failed.” That describes the check’s result, not necessarily the state of every DNS request on the device. A browser may still reach websites even when its verification probe does not complete, and another app may follow a different resolver path.

Keep each test in scope

The Status Page checks the browser viewing it. A command-line lookup reports what that command’s DNS path reached. Neither result automatically verifies every app, browser, or device on the network. A browser-only Control D setup is not expected to change operating-system command-line results.

For example, if the Status Page says “Not using Control D” in one browser, that is evidence about that browser’s check. It does not establish that a second browser, a phone, or the router is also bypassing Control D. Conversely, a successful command-line verification for a system deployment does not prove that the browser uses the same resolver. Treat every result as a clue about its own path, then test the specific app or device where the problem occurs.

Use the right check for the setup

Control D can be configured in a browser, in the operating system, through a router, or with Control D software such as the ctrld daemon. The useful test depends on where the service was configured and which device or app is affected.

Setup or evidence What it can tell you What it does not establish
Control D Status Page Whether the browser that opened the page was verified as using Control D. Whether all other apps or devices use Control D.
nslookup verify.controld.com on a system or router deployment Whether that command reached a Control D resolver, based on the verification output. Whether a browser uses the same resolver. It is not an expected test for a browser-only configuration.
Activity Log on a configured physical device Whether requests from that device are reaching Control D while you use it. Whether a different device or an unobserved app uses the same path.

If the device has no browser or command line, Control D recommends checking the Activity Log for a device already configured on the physical device. Look for query records while using it.

Make the test correspond to the problem. If one browser is affected, use that browser’s Status Page and compare it with another app. If the whole operating system or router is configured, use a system-level check such as the documented command-line verification, while keeping in mind that it represents the command’s DNS path. If you have only a device without a browser or shell, Activity Log records can show whether requests from that configured physical device are reaching Control D.

Do not treat these checks as interchangeable. A Status Page result is not a network-wide audit, a shell command is not a browser test, and an Activity Log observation applies only to the configured device and requests visible there. This scope distinction is especially useful when one device works while another does not, or when only a particular browser behaves differently.

If the browser is not using the intended DNS

A browser can use its own Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS resolver rather than the DNS configured for the operating system or router. Chrome and Firefox support browser-level resolver settings, so a browser may take a different path from other apps on the same device.

  1. Confirm where Control D is intended to be configured: directly in the browser, on the operating system, or on the router.
  2. Open the affected browser’s Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS settings and check whether a different resolver is explicitly selected.
  3. If the browser should use Control D directly, follow the browser-specific Control D setup instructions. If the intended setup is OS- or router-wide, correct any browser-level resolver mismatch according to that setup or your administrator’s guidance.
  4. Reopen the Status Page in that browser. Test other apps separately if they are also affected.

Do not infer that a browser override exists solely from an “Unable to verify” result; that result means the browser check did not complete.

A useful comparison is to open the same ordinary domain in the affected browser and in another app or browser. If only one browser has a different Status Page result or filtering behavior, focus first on its Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS setting. If all apps on the device are affected, a browser-only setting is less likely to explain the entire symptom; revisit the operating-system, router, or Control D software configuration instead.

There are two legitimate intended arrangements: a browser may be set up to use Control D directly, or it may rely on DNS configured at the operating-system or router level. The troubleshooting goal is not necessarily to force every layer to use an identical setting; it is to make the actual configuration match the intended deployment. If a different resolver was explicitly selected and you did not intend that, correct the mismatch using the relevant setup instructions or administrator guidance.

If DNS changes when a VPN or overlay network connects

When lookup failures, filtering bypass, or intermittent behavior begin or end with a VPN connection, check whether the VPN or endpoint security software is also managing DNS. Two components trying to control DNS can produce a conflict. Control D describes DNS Intercept Mode as a way to address DNS conflicts and documents support for Windows and macOS; its documentation says Linux is not supported.

Control D names F5 BIG-IP APM, Cisco AnyConnect, Palo Alto GlobalProtect, Tailscale, Windscribe, and WireGuard among the VPN and overlay cases it has tested. A tested case is not a guarantee for every version or configuration; use the platform-specific instructions and compare behavior with the VPN both connected and disconnected.

Control D’s DNS Intercept Mode documentation describes its purpose this way: “Stop VPN software from fighting with Control D over DNS settings.” Use the feature’s platform-specific instructions rather than assuming that a setting or test for one operating system applies to another. The documented support distinction matters: Windows and macOS are covered, while Linux is not supported by that mode.

To isolate a VPN-related problem, note whether the same ordinary domain resolves and whether filtering behaves as expected with the VPN disconnected and connected. If the symptom tracks the connection state, investigate DNS management by the VPN or endpoint software and the documented Intercept Mode compatibility for your platform. A tested VPN or overlay listing is useful evidence that Control D has evaluated a case, but it is not a promise for every release, policy, or device configuration.

Choose a reliable Windows test

On Windows, nslookup.exe bypasses the DNS Client and its NRPT rules, so it is not a reliable check for DNS Intercept Mode. In PowerShell, Control D recommends:

If you need to use nslookup, query the local ctrld listener explicitly, as described in Control D’s DNS Intercept Mode instructions. Do not interpret an ordinary nslookup.exe result as a definitive Intercept Mode test.

This caveat is important because a test can look like a failure even when it is simply bypassing the Windows DNS path that Intercept Mode is intended to handle. Use the PowerShell command for the documented Windows check, or explicitly query the local listener if you are using nslookup. Avoid drawing a conclusion from the ordinary nslookup.exe output alone.

If sites are blocked incorrectly—or not blocked

If ordinary browsing and DNS lookups work but filtering is wrong, focus on the profile and rules applied to the affected endpoint rather than general connectivity. Control D filters are blocklists attached to profiles, and different endpoints may not be using the profile you expect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm which profile is enforced for the affected endpoint.
  2. Check the filters attached to that profile and any service-specific rules or exceptions that could explain the result.
  3. For a legitimate domain blocked by a filter, confirm the source of the block, add a local exception if appropriate, and report the false positive to the relevant filter maintainer.
  4. After changing a filter, allow for deployment. Control D says filters are rebuilt and deployed every 15 minutes or less; that cadence does not promise an exact update time for an individual endpoint.

If only one app has the problem, compare its behavior with a browser or another app on the same device. The difference can help identify whether the issue is app-specific or applies to the device’s wider DNS path.

For a site that should be blocked but still loads, first verify that the affected endpoint is using the profile you intended. Then inspect that profile’s filters and any service-specific rule or exception that may account for the result. A filtering problem can be caused by the wrong profile or a rule choice even when DNS itself is operating normally.

For a legitimate domain that is blocked, identify the filter responsible before changing anything. Control D’s guidance is to confirm the source, create a local exception when appropriate, and report the false positive to the relevant maintainer. This distinguishes a local need from a broader list problem and avoids treating a single blocked site as proof that all filtering is broken.

Changes to filters are not necessarily visible immediately. Control D states that filters are rebuilt and deployed every 15 minutes or less, but that is the general rebuild and deployment cadence, not an exact promise for a particular endpoint. After a change, verify the profile and rules again and allow for deployment rather than repeatedly changing unrelated DNS settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the deployment layer before changing settings

Control D documents DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, DNS-over-QUIC, and optional legacy DNS deployment paths. Its documentation says modern secure DNS support is built into Windows 11, macOS Big Sur or newer, iOS 14 or newer, and Android 9 or newer, so extra software is not required for those operating systems to use secure DNS. Control D also offers setup software and the ctrld command-line daemon.

For a router deployment, the router’s upstream DNS must be changed to a resolver associated with a configured device. A working browser-level configuration does not by itself show that the router or other devices are configured, and a system-level check does not establish that a browser is following the system resolver.

Use the deployment type to decide which settings matter:

  • Browser: check that browser’s Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS configuration and use its Status Page result as evidence about that browser.
  • Operating system: check the OS’s DNS setup and use an appropriate system-level verification. Secure DNS support is built into Windows 11, macOS Big Sur or newer, iOS 14 or newer, and Android 9 or newer; the documentation says extra software is not required in those cases.
  • Router: verify that its upstream DNS points to a resolver associated with a configured device. A setting on one client browser does not configure the router for the rest of the network.
  • Control D app or ctrld daemon: investigate the software’s configured path and use a check appropriate to that device. Do not substitute a browser-only result for the system or router setup.

The documented secure DNS protocols include DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, and DNS-over-QUIC, with legacy DNS available as an option. Which path applies depends on the actual setup. The key troubleshooting point is not to assume that every device or layer uses the same protocol or resolver just because Control D has been configured somewhere on the network.

Match the symptom to the layer

Observed symptom Investigate first Useful next check
Ordinary domains fail in several apps Device connectivity and the DNS configuration for the deployment in use Test an ordinary domain, then verify the configured resolver using a check appropriate to that deployment.
Only one browser fails verification or behaves differently That browser’s Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS setting Compare its Status Page result with another app or browser, keeping in mind they may use different DNS paths.

Lookups work but filtering is wrong Endpoint profile, attached filters, service rules, and exceptions Review the profile and inspect the Activity Log if available for the configured device.

This comparison also helps avoid a misleading fix. If ordinary domains fail across several apps, start with connectivity and the configured DNS path. If only one browser differs, check its resolver setting. If the VPN state predicts the change, focus on VPN or endpoint DNS management. If lookups succeed and the problem is only what gets blocked, check profile enforcement and filter rules.

What to collect before asking for help

Useful troubleshooting details let support distinguish a browser-only verification issue from a wider DNS or filtering problem. Record:

  • Where Control D is configured: browser, operating system, router, app, or ctrld.
  • The device’s operating system and version, the affected browser, and which apps are affected.
  • Whether ordinary DNS lookups and websites work.
  • The exact Status Page result, if available, and whether a VPN or overlay network is connected.
  • The time the problem occurred, including time zone if it may matter.

Also note whether the behavior changes when a VPN connects or disconnects, which verification method you used, and whether the issue is a failed lookup, a browser-only verification result, or a filtering decision. These details help support understand what the test actually measured instead of treating unlike paths as equivalent.

The Status Page’s copied diagnostic results include personal information such as your IP address and Endpoint ID. Share those results privately with support rather than posting them publicly.

Control D’s Status Page and DNS Intercept Mode documentation were consulted on October 11, 2026. Platform support and integration details can change, so check the current documentation for the exact setup instructions that match your operating system and VPN.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Control D Status Page say “Unable to verify”?

It means the browser verification check did not complete successfully. It does not, by itself, prove that DNS is broken or that Control D is not being used. Try an ordinary domain or another app, then compare the result with the DNS path for the layer where Control D is configured.

Why does the Status Page say I am not using Control D when other apps work?

The Status Page tests the browser that opened it. That browser may use a different Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS resolver from the operating system or router. Check the browser’s resolver setting and compare its result with other apps without assuming they share the same DNS path.

Why is my browser not using Control D?

Check whether the browser has its own Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS resolver selected. Chrome and Firefox can use a browser-level resolver that differs from OS DNS. If the browser should use Control D directly, follow the browser-specific setup instructions; if the intended setup is OS- or router-wide, correct a browser-level mismatch according to that setup or administrator guidance.

Why does DNS stop working or filtering change when I connect my VPN?

A VPN or endpoint security program may also manage DNS, creating a conflict. Compare behavior with the VPN connected and disconnected, then check Control D’s DNS Intercept Mode instructions for your platform. Control D documents Windows and macOS support for Intercept Mode and says Linux is not supported.

Can I use nslookup to test DNS Intercept Mode on Windows?

Not as an ordinary check. Control D says nslookup.exe bypasses the Windows DNS Client and its NRPT rules, so it is not reliable for this purpose. Use Resolve-DnsName example.com in PowerShell, or query the local ctrld listener explicitly if using nslookup.

Why are blocked sites still loading, or why is a legitimate site blocked?

If DNS works but filtering is wrong, confirm which profile is enforced for the affected endpoint, then inspect that profile’s filters, service-specific rules, and exceptions. For a legitimate domain blocked by a filter, confirm the source, add a local exception if appropriate, and report the false positive to the relevant maintainer.

How long should a filter change take to appear?

Control D says filters are rebuilt and deployed every 15 minutes or less. That is the stated cadence, not an exact guarantee for when a particular endpoint will reflect a change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a successful command-line check prove that my browser uses Control D?

No. The command reports the DNS path used by that command, while the Status Page checks the browser viewing it. A browser-only setup is not expected to change OS-wide command-line results, and a system-level result does not prove the browser uses the same resolver.

Do I need to install software to use Control D secure DNS?

Control D says modern secure DNS support is built into Windows 11, macOS Big Sur or newer, iOS 14 or newer, and Android 9 or newer, so extra software is not required on those platforms to use secure DNS. Control D also offers setup software and the ctrld daemon as deployment options.

What should I send Control D support?

Include where Control D is configured, the operating system and browser, which apps are affected, whether ordinary lookups work, the exact Status Page result, VPN connection state, and the time of the problem. Share copied Status Page diagnostics privately because they include personal information such as your IP address and Endpoint ID.

The Bottom Line

When Control D appears not to work, first determine whether ordinary DNS is failing, only one browser is using a different resolver, a VPN is changing DNS behavior, or filtering rules are producing an unexpected result. Use a check that matches the configured layer: the Status Page for its browser, a command-line check for that command’s path, or the Activity Log for a configured device. Then inspect Secure DNS settings, VPN DNS handling, or the endpoint’s profile and filters as appropriate. Do not treat “Unable to verify” as proof of a DNS outage, and keep diagnostic details private when contacting support.
