Measure the time to revoke an exposed credential from the earliest evidenced exposure to issuer-confirmed invalidation—not from the moment an incident ticket is opened, a revocation request is sent, or a secret is removed from code. Track exposure-to-detection separately from detection-to-confirmed-revocation; they reveal different gaps in your response.
Define what counts as exposure and revocation
For this metric, exposure begins when the credential first became accessible to an unauthorized party, based on the evidence available. That could be a public repository commit, an exposed artifact, or another disclosure. The timestamp of a later alert or ticket is not a substitute for the exposure time.

Revocation ends the interval only when there is evidence that the issuer has made the credential unusable. Prefer an issuer-side status check or a documented provider response. A submitted request records an action, not proof of the outcome. Removing a credential from a repository is also not revocation: GitHub’s Enterprise Server 3.19 remediation guidance identifies revoking the credential with its provider as the key remediation step (GitHub: Remediating a leaked secret in your repository).

This is authoritative guidance for authenticators, but it does not settle the exact status semantics of every API key, cloud token, or provider.
#1 Best Overall
- Standard OATH compliant TOTP token (time based)
- 6-digit OTP code with countdown time bar
- Zero footprint: no need for the end user to install any software
- Secure, sturdy, and long-life hardware design
- Easy to use - Portable key chain design. These tokens will only work with Symantec VIP Access. These tokens will not work for any other Multi-Factor Authentication services, besides Symantec VIP Access.
Record the events needed to calculate the clock
Create one record for each exposed credential, linked to a stable incident and credential identifier. Do not copy the secret itself into analytics or incident metrics. Record timestamps in a consistent timezone and precision, along with the evidence supporting each event.
- Exposure time:
exposure_at, the earliest evidenced time the credential was accessible to an unauthorized party. Record uncertainty or a bounded time range if the exact moment is unknown. - Detection time:
detected_at, when the first scanner alert, provider notification, or credible human report arrived. - Acknowledgment time:
acknowledged_at, when the responsible response function accepted the case. - Request time:
revocation_requested_at, when a person or automation requested issuer action. - Confirmed invalidation time:
issuer_confirmed_inactive_at, when an issuer status check, validation, or documented provider response confirmed that the credential was inactive. - Context: credential type, issuer, environment, owner, access scope or privilege, exposure channel, severity, detection path, verification method, and whether the credential remained active.
Use status values that reflect what is actually known. GitHub documents validity-check results of active, inactive, and unknown; coverage and available metadata vary by secret type and provider (GitHub: Validity checks). An unknown result is not confirmation that the credential was revoked.

Calculate separate, auditable intervals
With timestamps in a consistent timezone, calculate:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Detection lag =
detected_at - exposure_at, when exposure time is known. This measures how long the exposure went undetected. - Response/revocation lag =
issuer_confirmed_inactive_at - detected_at. This measures time from discovery to confirmed invalidation. - End-to-end exposure-to-revocation =
issuer_confirmed_inactive_at - exposure_at, when both endpoints are known. - Request-to-confirmation delay =
issuer_confirmed_inactive_at - revocation_requested_at. Keep this as a diagnostic sub-interval to distinguish operator or automation delay from issuer-side delay.
If the exposure time is unknown, report it as unknown or bounded; do not manufacture an end-to-end duration. If the issuer status is unknown or unverified, do not claim a confirmed revocation time. For negative or otherwise impossible intervals, first check source-clock and timezone errors. If the timestamps still cannot be reconciled, mark the record invalid for duration calculations and retain an audit note rather than silently dropping it.

- OTP token that provides secure remote access with strong authentication
- Easy to use and easy to carry
- Expected battery life is approximately 7 years
Handle replacement without confusing the endpoint
Some credentials need a replacement activated before the old one is invalidated to avoid service disruption. Record replacement activation and old-credential invalidation as separate events; the replacement does not mean the exposed credential has been revoked. GitHub’s remediation guidance describes replacement-first sequencing for cases where it helps avoid downtime, while still treating provider revocation as the necessary action against the leaked credential (GitHub: Remediating a leaked secret in your repository).
Assess where the credential was exposed, whether there are other leak locations, its last use and scope where available, and any service dependencies. GitHub recommends rotating an affected credential immediately after a secret-scanning alert: “When you receive an alert, rotate the affected credential immediately to prevent unauthorized access” (GitHub: Secret scanning).

- Works with authentication systems that support TOTP tokens: Google, Facebook, Coinbase, GDAX, Dropbox, GitHub, Kickstarter, Microsoft, TeamViewer, etc.
- Programmable an unlimited number of times. Features syncable clock to prevent issues with drift
- About half the size of a credit card and just as thick-easily keep multiple cards in wallet
- Works with "Token2 Token Burner" or "Protectimus TOTP Burner", both available in the Google Play Store. Now also iOS compatible (iPhone 7 and later)
- More secure than software token as your codes cannot be intercepted by malware on your phone.
Report performance without hiding unknowns
For each reporting period, state the case count and how many cases have complete timestamps. For cases with a confirmed issuer endpoint, report the median and a high percentile of detection-to-confirmed-revocation time. Separately report the exposure-to-detection distribution for cases with known exposure times. Show the number and share of cases with unknown exposure time and unverified issuer status so readers can see the limits of the metric.

Break results down by credential class or issuer, severity or privilege, exposure channel, and detection route. Otherwise, changes in the mix of incidents can look like changes in response performance. These aggregation choices are practical reporting recommendations; the cited guidance does not prescribe a particular percentile or a universal benchmark.
Set internal, risk-based time objectives if they help teams act, but label them as internal objectives. NIST SP 800-63B-4 requires prompt invalidation after compromise detection and says organizations should establish time limits; it does not specify one universal number for all credentials and issuers. GitHub recommends immediate rotation after a detected leak. Neither statement establishes a cross-industry numerical revocation-time standard.
Keep operational targets separate from benchmarks
The AWS Samples credential-compromise playbook is a community-maintained template, not official AWS documentation. It calls for immediate action on publicly exposed credentials even without confirmed misuse and includes metrics for assessing response effectiveness. Its example workflow has a “< 15 min” triage target; that is a sample triage instruction, not a general revocation benchmark (AWS Samples: Credential Compromise Incident Response Playbook).
