Prepare the receipt or invoice as HTML, then render it to PDF with a browser automation API such as Puppeteer or Playwright. Set print page size and margins deliberately, and test the actual template with long item lists, wrapped addresses, and page breaks. First identify which document the transaction requires: a GST tax invoice, bill of supply, or receipt voucher. PDF software renders the document; it does not decide its tax treatment.
Choose the right GST document before building the template
A receipt, tax invoice, bill of supply, and receipt voucher are not interchangeable labels. The relevant document depends on the transaction and the seller’s circumstances. CBIC’s GST invoice rules specify separate particulars for tax invoices, bills of supply, and receipt vouchers; validate the classification and current requirements for your store with a qualified tax adviser.

Tax invoice
The rule’s listed particulars include supplier name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number unique for the financial year; issue date; recipient details in specified circumstances; HSN code for goods or accounting code for services; description; quantity and unit for goods; total and taxable values; and tax rates and amounts. Buyer-address requirements vary according to registration and supply circumstances, so do not apply one buyer-field checklist to every order.
Receipt voucher
A receipt voucher has its own particulars. These include supplier identity and GSTIN, a financial-year-unique consecutive number, issue date, recipient particulars, description, advance received, tax rate and amount, relevant place-of-supply details for inter-state supplies, reverse-charge status, and supplier signature or digital signature.

Bill of supply and scenario-specific rules
CBIC lists bill-of-supply particulars separately as well. The rules also describe a daily consolidated-invoice provision for certain supplies to unregistered recipients who do not require an invoice, and separate timing rules for service invoices. These provisions are scenario-specific, not a universal rule for every online order. The cited material does not establish the applicability to every seller of current e-invoicing thresholds, QR-code notifications, marketplace arrangements, or exceptions. Check current official notices and your seller-specific obligations before treating a template as a compliance checklist.
Render the HTML as a PDF with Puppeteer
Puppeteer can load a prepared page and save its print rendering as a PDF. The example below is a minimal Node.js script: it reads a local HTML template, renders it with Chromium, and writes an A4 file. Install Puppeteer in your project with npm install puppeteer, save the template as receipt.html, then run the script with Node.js. See the Puppeteer PDF generation guide and PDFOptions API reference.

})();In a web application, use a controlled route or set the page content from a trusted template and structured order data instead of exposing arbitrary customer HTML to the browser. Escape customer-supplied strings before inserting them into markup. Keep the generated PDF associated with its original order and document record; the cited browser API documentation does not prescribe a retention design.

Use print styles for layout, and choose the API options to match them. Puppeteer documents paper formats and dimensions, margins, page ranges, CSS page-size preference, background printing, and waiting for fonts by default. With preferCSSPageSize: true, a CSS @page size can take priority over the API paper format.

Use page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) first only if you intentionally want screen styling rather than the default print styling. See the Playwright Page API. Choose Puppeteer or Playwright based on the browser runtime already supported by your application; the cited API references do not establish comparative operating costs.
Validate the document with real order data
Browser rendering controls layout, not accounting or tax correctness. Before release, render representative records from the actual store and inspect the PDF, including:

- Totals, taxable values, tax rates and amounts, invoice identifiers, and buyer and seller details at normal print size.
- Logo and font loading, background colors, repeated table headers, and page breaks.
- Output for each document type the workflow actually uses, rather than assuming one template fits every transaction.
Decide whether your application needs to save the PDF to a file or handle returned PDF bytes in memory; Puppeteer’s guide demonstrates path-based saving, and its API supports PDF output options. Validate the order data and resulting pages in your own workflow because the rendering APIs do not verify required business fields.

Does generating a PDF make an online store receipt GST-compliant?
No. The renderer places supplied content on a page; the seller must determine the correct document type and applicable particulars for the transaction.
Can a single HTML template handle every Indian online order?
