Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond runs as a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. For a reliable server, use Java 17, allocate at least 8GB of RAM for a self-hosted installation, and run the exact same pack version that every player installs. A managed host can automate the files and offer a 6GB starting plan, but that lower figure is a provider recommendation rather than the community guide’s documented baseline.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
This guide covers both approaches, memory planning, first launch, updates, backups, and the most common recovery steps.

Confirm these fundamentals before downloading anything:
- Game and loader: Minecraft 1.20.1 with the Forge edition of Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond.
- Java: Java 17, preferably an Adoptium build. Newer or older Java releases can prevent Forge or the startup scripts from loading correctly.
- Memory: The Create Chronicles Series community wiki documents at least 8GB of RAM for the server. Some commercial hosts advertise 6GB as a starting point for small groups; treat that as a host-specific recommendation and leave headroom when possible.
- Processor: The community setup documentation calls for a CPU rated at least 3.5GHz. Clock speed alone is not a complete performance measure, so use a modern CPU with good single-thread performance if you are choosing hardware.
- Matching client files: Every player must use the same modpack release as the server. A different pack version, Forge build, or changed mod file can cause a missing-mod error or disconnect.
- Storage and permissions: Keep enough free disk space for the server files, generated world, logs, backups, and future pack versions. On Linux, the account running the server must be able to read and write the installation folder.
Decide where the server will run before you begin. A local installation gives you complete access to scripts, JVM arguments, configuration files, and backups. A managed service removes most file handling and provides a control panel, but you trade some control for recurring cost and provider limits.

Choose local self-hosting or a managed server
Local self-hosting
Run the server on a computer you control when you want direct access to every file and setting, already have suitable hardware, or prefer a one-time hardware cost. You are responsible for installing Java, starting the scripts, accepting the EULA, configuring memory, keeping the machine online, updating the pack, and maintaining backups. A home connection and computer that sleep or shut down will make the server unavailable to everyone else.
Managed hosting
A managed Minecraft host is usually the simpler option for a small group. You select a plan, choose the Forge/Minecraft 1.20.1 pack in a panel, and let the provider deploy the files. The provider handles the operating system and much of the file work; you still need to select the correct pack release, set permissions for players, and maintain your own world backups.

Quick decision table
| Question | Local server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls files and JVM settings? | You control the complete folder and arguments. | The panel exposes supported settings; some files or flags may be restricted. |
| Initial effort | Install Java, download server files, run scripts, accept the EULA, and tune memory. | Order a server and install the pack through the host panel. |
| Ongoing work | You handle uptime, updates, permissions, and backups. | The provider handles the machine; you still manage the world, pack versions, and player access. |
| Cost pattern | Uses your hardware, electricity, and internet connection. | Recurring monthly charge; advertised prices and promotions can change. |
| Best fit | Owners who want maximum control and can administer a computer. | Groups that want a guided deployment and do not want to maintain the host machine. |
Install the server locally
1. Download the matching Server Files archive
- Open the Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond project on CurseForge.
- Open the pack’s Files tab.
- Select the exact release your players will use.
- Download that release’s Server Files archive, rather than only the client profile.
Record the release number in a text file or your server notes. When players report a problem, checking that number first is faster than comparing individual mods.
2. Extract into a dedicated folder
Create a new folder used only for this server and extract Server-Files.zip into it. Avoid placing the files inside a synchronized cloud folder that may lock or partially sync files while the server is running. Keep the original ZIP outside the live folder so it is available for a clean reinstall.
On Linux, verify ownership and read/write permissions for the account that will run the server. If the startup script is not executable, run:

sudo chmod +x startserver.sh
Use the least privilege practical for your setup; do not run the whole server as root merely to bypass a permissions error.
3. Start it once to generate files
On Windows, launch startserver.bat. On Linux, run startserver.sh from the extracted server directory. The first launch creates the initial configuration and world-related files, so it can take longer than later starts. Keep the console open and let the process finish instead of closing the window when it appears to pause.
4. Accept the Minecraft EULA
After the first launch, open eula.txt in the server folder. Change:
eula=false
to:
eula=true
Save the file and start the script again if the first process stopped after creating it. A successful launch reports a line similar to Dedicated server took XX seconds to load. The exact number of seconds varies with hardware and world generation; the important part is that the server reaches the ready state without an error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute5. Set the JVM memory limits
The supplied files use usr_jvm_args.txt for Java memory arguments. Edit the existing -Xms value to control startup memory and -Xmx to set the maximum heap. Keep the values in a form Java accepts, such as -Xms6G and -Xmx8G, and do not allocate all physical RAM to Minecraft: the operating system, Java overhead, file cache, and other services need memory too.
For this pack, 8GB is the documented community baseline for a server. If you begin below that amount because your host recommends 6GB, monitor memory use and lag as players explore. Raise the maximum before adding more view distance, players, or heavily loaded areas.

6. Prepare client installations
Have every player install the same Create Chronicles release selected for the server. They should use the same Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge combination and avoid adding or removing mods from the pack. A clean, separate profile is safer than modifying a profile used for unrelated packs.
Install through a managed host
Managed panels differ, but the documented workflows follow the same pattern: purchase a suitable plan, select Forge/Minecraft 1.20.1, search for the pack, choose the pinned release, and start the server.
WinterNode workflow and sizing
WinterNode advertises one-click installation for the pack, Forge/Minecraft 1.20.1 support, and a 6GB recommendation for a small server. Its page displayed a starting price of $11.94 per month when the information was collected. That is a provider-advertised figure and may change with promotions, region, billing term, or pack version; verify the current checkout total.
Crafty Servers workflow and sizing
Crafty Servers states that the pack needs at least 6GB and installs the pinned release automatically. Confirm which release is pinned before players connect, and check whether the panel permits changing to another supported release.
PlayNHost workflow and sizing
- Order a server plan.
- Open the modpack installation panel.
- Choose CurseForge as the source.
- Search for Create Chronicles: Bosses and Beyond.
- Select the required release and install it.
PlayNHost lists 6GB as the minimum starting plan in its documented workflow. A minimum plan can work for a small group, but leave room for exploration, entities, and future updates instead of treating the minimum as a permanent target.
How to compare a host plan
| Capacity factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | Dedicated or shared memory, and whether the advertised amount is the Java heap or total container memory. | Mod loading, world generation, entities, and simultaneous players all consume memory. |
| CPU | Modern processor generation, allocated cores, and single-thread performance. | Tick processing and chunk generation can be limited by CPU speed even when RAM is available. |
| Storage | Disk type, included capacity, and what happens when the world grows. | Generated chunks, logs, and backups increase disk use over time. |
| Backups | Frequency, retention, restore controls, and whether backups count against storage. | A backup you cannot restore quickly is not a complete recovery plan. |
| Support and access | Panel console, file manager, SFTP access, and support response. | These determine how easily you can repair a failed update or edit a configuration. |
Plan RAM for your players and world
There is no single RAM number that guarantees smooth performance. Player count is only one variable; view distance, chunk generation, machines, entities, and the age of the world can all increase load. The community documentation lists at least 8GB, while several hosts begin small-group plans at 6GB.

| Expected online players | Published planning range | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 | 6–8GB, according to DedicatedMinecraft.host | Use 6GB only as a host-specific starting point; 8GB gives more room for exploration and automation. |
| 5–15 | 10–12GB, according to DedicatedMinecraft.host | Choose the upper end when players generate new terrain together or build dense machine areas. |
| More than 15 or a mature, heavily automated world | Not stated as a fixed amount | Measure actual memory and tick behavior, then scale RAM and CPU together rather than relying on a slot number. |
The 6–8GB and 10–12GB ranges above are provider guidance, not a benchmark for every hardware configuration. Keep unused system memory available and increase the allocation in measured steps. More RAM cannot correct a weak CPU, excessive view distance, or a faulty mod.
Connect players safely
Once the console reports that the dedicated server has loaded, give players the server address and the exact pack release. Keep the server console available during the first connection so you can see missing-mod, authentication, or memory errors as they occur.
- Use a private allowlist or equivalent access control when the server is intended for friends.
- Do not distribute operator privileges casually; administrative commands can alter or delete the world.
- Keep the server folder and backups separate from public download links.
- Ask a player to connect before inviting the whole group, then verify that they can load a world, move through a new area, and interact with the pack’s machines.
If a player cannot join, compare the client pack release and Forge version with the server before changing network or JVM settings. Version mismatch is the most direct explanation when only one client fails.

Back up before every update
Stop the server completely before replacing files. A live world can be written while you copy it, leaving an inconsistent backup that may not restore.
- Tell players to log out and stop the server from the console or hosting panel.
- Copy the entire world folder to a separate backup location.
- Also copy
config/,defaultconfigs/,kubejs/,mods/,eula.txt, and your JVM argument file. - Label the backup with the pack release and date.
- Keep at least one rollback copy that will not be overwritten by the update.
For a manual pack update, obtain the new release’s Server Files archive. Replace the old config/, defaultconfigs/, kubejs/, and mods/ folders with the versions from that archive, then start the server and watch the console for errors. Do not delete the only copy of the old folders until the new release has loaded and players have confirmed the world works.
If the new release fails, stop the server, restore the previous folders and world backup, and return to the last known-good pack version. Treat the rollback copy as part of the update rather than an emergency action invented after data loss.

Troubleshoot common failures
The server exits immediately and mentions the EULA
Open eula.txt in the actual server folder and confirm it contains eula=true. If the value keeps reverting, check that the account running the script can write to the folder and that you edited the file generated by this installation rather than a duplicate extraction.
Recommended Free Tools
The script is not executable on Linux
Run sudo chmod +x startserver.sh once, then launch it from the server directory. If it still fails, verify ownership and read/write permissions instead of repeatedly changing JVM arguments.
Java reports an unsupported version
Install and select Java 17, preferably an Adoptium distribution. Confirm that the startup script resolves that Java installation, especially when several Java versions are installed. Forge 1.20.1 packs are not a good place to guess which runtime is active.
Players receive missing-mod or incompatible-version errors
Compare the server’s selected release with the client profile, Minecraft 1.20.1 version, and Forge version. Reinstall the client profile from the same release if files were manually added, removed, or modified.
The server runs out of memory or becomes unstable during exploration
Check the -Xmx value in usr_jvm_args.txt, the host’s actual memory allocation, and the number of players generating new chunks. Move from a 6GB starting allocation toward the documented 8GB baseline or the 10–12GB range suggested for 5–15 players when your hardware or plan permits. Keep enough RAM for the operating system and do not assume that increasing heap alone fixes CPU saturation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The world loads but feels slow
Reduce simultaneous chunk generation and machine or entity load while testing. Check CPU quality, not only the RAM number, and watch whether lag occurs during exploration or in a permanently loaded automation area. A larger allocation is useful only when memory pressure is the limiting factor.
An update breaks the world
Stop the server and restore the world plus the old configuration, KubeJS, default configuration, and mods folders from the rollback copy. Do not continue experimenting on the only copy of the affected world. Once the previous release loads, make a fresh backup and review the new release’s files before attempting the update again.
Which setup is right for your group?
Choose local hosting when
- You can provide a computer that meets the 3.5GHz CPU guidance and has at least 8GB available for the server without starving the operating system.
- You want direct control of JVM arguments, configuration, scripts, and backups.
- You are comfortable maintaining Java, permissions, updates, and uptime.
Choose managed hosting when
- You want a panel-driven installation instead of extracting archives and editing scripts.
- Your group prefers a predictable monthly charge to maintaining a machine at home.
- You need provider support, automated deployment, or easier scaling as the world and player count grow.
For either choice, begin with the exact server release, Java 17, and a verified backup routine. Use 6GB only as a small-group host recommendation, regard 8GB as the documented baseline, and scale toward 10–12GB for the 5–15-player range when world activity justifies it.
