Self-hosting on a computer you control
Self-hosting costs no separate hosting subscription and gives you direct control over the server files, configuration, world saves, backups, and mod updates. You must keep the machine running, maintain Java and NeoForge, protect the operating system, and configure network access if friends are outside your home.

Managed hosting
A managed provider can supply a control panel, persistent uptime, automated backups, and an internet-facing address without requiring you to maintain the host operating system or router. VeryGames currently lists CrazyTown Season 3 as an available game option. Treat that listing as an availability signal, not a fixed specification: check the current NeoForge build, allocated memory, storage, backup policy, player limits, and price on the order page before paying. A host that offers only a client import or a different loader will not produce a compatible server.

Prepare a clean self-hosted server folder
Install and verify Java 21
Install a 64-bit Java 21 runtime on the computer that will run the server. NeoForged’s documentation specifically calls for Java 21 and a 64-bit JVM for the 1.21/1.21.1 line. On a command prompt or terminal, check the active executable before installing anything:

If it reports an older release, Java 8, Java 17, or a 32-bit VM, correct the system PATH or call the Java 21 executable by its full path when running the installer. Having several Java versions installed is acceptable only when the command used for NeoForge and the server is explicitly the Java 21 executable.
Create an isolated directory
Create a new directory used only by this server, such as C:MinecraftCrazyTownS3 on Windows or /srv/minecraft/crazytown-s3 on Linux. Keep the server archive, NeoForge installer, generated libraries, configuration, world, logs, and scripts together. Do not extract over another modpack and do not reuse a world or configuration directory from a different Minecraft version.
- Give the account running the server read and write access to the directory.
- Keep the directory outside a cloud-sync folder while first testing; synchronization conflicts can corrupt region, lock, or configuration files.
- Reserve enough free storage for the extracted pack, libraries, logs, backups, and world growth. The 206.3 MB archive is not a complete estimate of the final disk requirement.
Download and unpack the correct server pack
Select the dedicated-server artifact
Open the CrazyTown Season 3 files on its CurseForge project and select the entry identified as the server pack for Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge. The listed artifact is CrazyTown - Modpack Officiel-0.2.zip. A smaller client modpack ZIP may contain files intended for a launcher and may omit server scripts, server configuration, or other files required for a dedicated instance. Do not assume that renaming or extracting a client archive creates a valid server.

Extract without changing the layout
- Download the server-pack ZIP and confirm its name before opening it.
- Extract its contents directly into the new server directory.
- If the archive creates one top-level folder, make sure the generated NeoForge files will be placed in the folder you intend to run, rather than in an accidental nested path.
- Preserve file names, subdirectories, configuration files, and any included scripts exactly as supplied.
- Do not combine files from another CrazyTown revision, Minecraft release, loader, or unrelated modpack.
The upload date and version label matter when friends install their clients. If a newer or older server-pack revision is selected later, treat it as a coordinated update: back up the world, replace or update the server files as directed by the pack author, and have every player install the matching revision.

Download the NeoForge installer that targets Minecraft 1.21.1. Put the installer JAR in the server directory or note its full path. From a terminal opened in that directory, run the server installation option:
java -jar <installer>.jar --installServerReplace <installer>.jar with the actual filename. On Windows, a complete command might look like java -jar neoforge-...-installer.jar --installServer; on Linux, use the same form from the shell. If the shell says Java is not found, use the Java 21 executable’s full path. If the installer reports an unsupported Java version, fix the Java selection instead of bypassing the check.
The installer generates the NeoForge server files, libraries, and a platform-specific launch script. NeoForged’s documented flow is to run that generated script rather than inventing a separate classpath command. The script name depends on the operating system and installer output; use the file created in your directory.
Complete the first launch and EULA
- Run the generated NeoForge server script from the server directory.
- Watch the console and allow the initial file generation to finish. A first launch can take longer because libraries, configuration, and world files are being created.
- If the process stops and creates
eula.txt, open that file and read the linked Minecraft EULA. - Only if you agree to the EULA, change the agreement line from
eula=falsetoeula=true, then save the file. - Run the generated script again and wait for a message indicating that the server has completed loading and is ready for commands.
Do not start the server from a different working directory. Relative paths used by mods and configuration expect the script to run where the generated files reside. Keep the console open during this stage so Java errors, missing libraries, or mod-loading failures are visible.

Configure and test before inviting anyone
Use conservative configuration changes
Stop the server cleanly with its console stop command before editing configuration or replacing files. Make one change at a time and retain a copy of the original file. A modpack may depend on specific generated settings, so avoid deleting configuration directories as a generic fix. Change only settings you understand, then restart and inspect the log.
Test on the host computer
After the server reaches its ready state, launch a matching client on the same computer or local network and connect to localhost or 127.0.0.1. This isolates mod loading and server problems from router and internet problems. Confirm that you can enter the world, break and place a block, and reconnect after a clean stop and restart.
No official CrazyTown baseline states how much RAM or CPU a given number of players needs. Start with resources appropriate to your machine and group, then watch memory use, CPU saturation, tick-time warnings, garbage-collection pauses, and the server log while several players explore. Increase resources or reduce simultaneous load only after observing a repeatable bottleneck; do not copy an unsupported minimum from another pack.
Expose the server only after local success
For friends outside your home, identify the server’s listening port in the server configuration, allow that port through the host operating system’s firewall, and forward the same port from the router to the computer’s local address. Give players your public address and port, not the private 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x address used inside your network. Keep the computer’s local address reserved in the router so a reboot does not send the forwarding rule to another device.
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections. If port forwarding appears correct but outside players cannot connect, test from a genuinely external network and check whether your provider supplies a reachable public address. A managed host avoids most home-router work, but you still need to use the endpoint and port shown by its panel.

Install the matching client pack
Match the three compatibility identifiers
Every player should create a Minecraft 1.21.1 instance using NeoForge for 1.21.1 and import the client-side CrazyTown Season 3 pack revision that matches the server. The Minecraft version, loader, and pack revision are separate checks; matching only one or two is not sufficient.
- Set the launcher instance to Minecraft 1.21.1.
- Install or select the NeoForge loader for 1.21.1.
- Import the same CrazyTown Season 3 client release associated with the server-pack revision.
- Launch once and close the game so the instance’s
mods, configuration, and logs are created. - Connect only after the client starts without a mod-loading error.
Add separately supplied mods when directed
The project page warns that some mods could not be bundled in the main distribution and provides separate downloads. If the author identifies a particular file as required, download that exact file and copy it into the client’s /mods folder for the CrazyTown instance. Do not add random versions from a search result: a mod built for another Minecraft release or loader can prevent startup or create a server/client mismatch.
When a player receives a missing-mod message, compare the file names and versions against a known-working client’s mods directory and the server log. Keep a record of separately supplied files so a new player can reproduce the installation. Never copy server-only files into a client unless the pack author explicitly instructs you to do so.
Keep revisions, worlds, and backups orderly
Before changing the pack
- Stop the server cleanly and copy the entire world directory.
- Back up configuration, scripts, the mod list, and the current server-pack archive.
- Record the Minecraft version, NeoForge version, pack revision, and date in the backup name.
- Test a revision on a separate directory when possible instead of experimenting on the only copy of the live world.
When rolling back
Restore the matching server files and the world backup together. A world saved by a newer mod or configuration may not be safely opened by an older revision. Ask players to switch their client pack at the same time; allowing some clients to remain on a different revision makes troubleshooting ambiguous.
Monitor routine operation
Review logs after restarts, keep free disk space for world growth, and periodically verify that backups can actually be opened. Schedule maintenance announcements so players are not writing to the world while files are being copied. If the server runs on a shared household computer, prevent sleep and automatic reboots during scheduled play, while still applying operating-system and Java security updates during maintenance windows.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The installer will not run
- Run
java -versionand confirm 64-bit Java 21. - Call the Java 21 executable explicitly if another Java installation owns the PATH.
- Check that the installer filename and working directory are correct.
- Download a NeoForge installer for Minecraft 1.21.1, not a similarly named build for another release.
The server stops immediately
- Read the first error and its cause in the console or latest log rather than the final shutdown line.
- Confirm that NeoForge installation completed and that the generated script is being run from the server directory.
- Check for a missing, duplicated, or wrong-version mod in the extracted pack.
- Restore the clean server-pack extraction if files were mixed with another pack.
- If the stop is an EULA stop, edit
eula.txtonly after accepting the agreement, then start again.
A client cannot join because of a mismatch
Compare Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge 1.21.1, the CrazyTown pack revision, and the complete mod list. Pay special attention to the separate downloads identified by the project author. Remove an incorrectly downloaded duplicate and install the exact required file rather than the newest file you can find.
Players on the internet cannot connect
- Prove the server works through
localhostfirst. - Confirm the server is listening on the port you forwarded.
- Allow the port through the computer firewall and forward it to the correct local address.
- Test from outside your home network; testing from inside may be affected by router loopback support.
- Check for carrier-grade NAT, double NAT, or an ISP restriction on inbound connections.
The world lags with several players
Use the logs and operating-system monitors to identify whether CPU, memory, storage, or network use is the limiting factor. CrazyTown does not publish a guaranteed hardware or player-count minimum, so collect observations at the actual view distance, exploration pattern, and number of players you intend to support. Reduce avoidable background workloads, move the server to faster storage or a stronger machine when measurements justify it, and make changes one at a time so their effect is clear.
