Crazy Taxi: World Tour is a new series entry, not a one-to-one remake of the original. It keeps the high-speed passenger-pickup premise and adds a story campaign across five cities, missions, vehicle unlocks and customization, plus the series’ first online multiplayer. Its Arcade Mode is the announced option most directly modeled on the original’s timed cash-scoring play. World Tour is planned for 2027, so these are announced features, not a verdict on the finished game.
Is Crazy Taxi: World Tour a remake or a new game?
SEGA describes World Tour as a brand-new entry in the series. The original Crazy Taxi debuted in arcades in 1999 and later came to home consoles, including Dreamcast. Its basic challenge was to collect passengers and deliver them around the city, with rock-band music part of its identity. SEGA’s announcement frames World Tour as a continuation of that premise rather than a recreation of the original alone.

The clearest link to the older games is World Tour’s Arcade Mode, which SEGA says returns to a timed push to earn as much cash as possible. The new game also has a separate story campaign and other announced activities, so Arcade Mode is one part of a broader package.

How does World Tour expand the original formula?
A campaign built around Axel
The story follows Axel as he pursues masked villains who stole his taxi, taking his taxi business around the world. That gives World Tour a campaign framework beyond the original’s city-based arcade challenge. SEGA has not described the full plot or how campaign missions connect to the driving loop. SEGA’s announcement introduces the premise.
Five cities, with Japan confirmed as one
SEGA announces five unique cities with varied terrain. Its Japan map update confirms Japan as the third of the five story maps and names ICHIRAN, Kani Doraku and SHIBUYA109 storefronts. The full city list is not established in the cited announcements, and the five-city count does not by itself establish that every map is fully open-world. SEGA’s Japan update provides those details.

- As a fearless cab driver with attitude, your goal is to rack up the mega-bucks before your shift ends. It's a race against the clock as you pick up passengers and white-knuckle it through busy streets and back alleys to their various destinations. To keep that meter collecting cash, you've gotta take the fastest route possible, even if it means bending the traffic laws--just a little. So get a grip on the wheel, sharpen your senses, and don't lose your cool.
Jobs, unlocks and customization
The Steam description lists passenger jobs, side missions and odd jobs, as well as vehicle unlocks and customization. Those features suggest more activity and progression around the core taxi work, but the available descriptions do not explain how extensive the customization is or whether it changes vehicle performance.
What does World Tour preserve from the original?
Both games are built around rapid pickups and deliveries rather than conventional circuit racing. SEGA describes the series as a rush through the city to take passengers to their destinations, and presents Arcade Mode in World Tour as a timed, cash-scoring return to the earlier games’ thrills. That mode is the strongest announced fit for players looking for the original-style challenge; the story campaign and online play are additional directions, not evidence that the classic format has been replaced.

SEGA identifies rock-band music as a key appeal of the original. The World Tour announcements cited here do not establish a full soundtrack or confirm that the original’s music selection returns, so nostalgia for that specific soundtrack should not be treated as a confirmed feature.
