Could Virtual Display Glasses Be More Useful Than Meta Ray-Bans?

Virtual display glasses turn a compatible device into a private wearable screen for video, travel, and gaming—but they are tethered, visibly bulky, and may struggle with small text or long sessions.

If you want a private screen for a laptop, handheld console, or video, virtual display glasses may be more useful than camera-first smart glasses. They show a connected device’s display in your field of view; they do not offer the camera features that define the comparison. The trade-off is a conspicuous, tethered headset-like pair of glasses that can be blurry or uncomfortable during long sessions.

What virtual display glasses do

Display glasses connect to a compatible device—typically by USB-C—and mirror its screen in front of the wearer. The image is private to the wearer, although audio may not be: WIRED’s Boone Ashworth reported that sound from built-in frame speakers can leak to people nearby. The glasses draw power from the connected device rather than relying on their own batteries, according to Ashworth’s August 24, 2026 report.

That makes them a different kind of product from camera and AI glasses. The display models discussed by WIRED, including products from Xreal, Viture, and Rokid, are intended to give a phone, tablet, laptop, or gaming device a wearable screen—not to capture the world with a camera.

Where a virtual screen helps—and where it falls short

Travel, video, and handheld gaming

A private screen can be useful when you want to watch or play without holding a phone or looking down at a small handheld display. Ashworth reported using Xreal glasses with a Steam Deck to play Diablo IV. This is most compelling when you can sit still and the connected device supports video output over the connection you plan to use.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Laptop tasks and reading

Ashworth also connected the glasses to a laptop for browsing and work. But he found small text blurry and difficult to read. That makes them a poor assumption as a drop-in replacement for a conventional monitor, particularly for long sessions of document work, coding, or other tasks that depend on crisp text.

Comfort and visibility

The reviewer reported that the glasses overheated during a session lasting several hours and caused eye discomfort after extended viewing. He also found the thick frames conspicuous even with the projection lenses removed. These are observations from WIRED’s reviewer, not a guarantee that every wearer or model will have the same experience; they are reasons to try a pair before relying on it for lengthy use.

Model Reported price Display and fit Reported trade-offs
Xreal xbx A01+ $299 Lighter, 50-degree field of view, smaller screen WIRED reported lower screen quality than the R1 and no screen anchoring, so the image moves with head movement. The article said it launched in May 2026 and began shipping in July.
ROG Xreal R1 $849 57-degree field of view; WIRED describes a 171-inch virtual screen. The screen can be anchored or remain centered in the wearer’s vision. It was available for preorder when WIRED published its article, with shipment expected in September 2026. That timing is not confirmation of current stock or delivery.

The figures point to different priorities: the A01+ was presented as the lighter, lower-priced option, while the R1 offers a wider field of view and screen-position choices. The available account does not provide a measured weight, a directly comparable screen-quality rating, or a shared compatibility test for both models, so those comparisons should not be inferred from the listed specifications.

Check device and cable compatibility before buying

A USB-C connector alone does not establish that a device can send a video signal to the glasses. Check that the specific phone, tablet, computer, or console supports video output through its port, and confirm whether your setup needs an adapter or a longer cable.

That matters in practice: Ashworth reported that connecting a PlayStation 5 required a longer cord and still did not produce a display he found good enough. His experience does not establish that every PS5 setup will perform the same way, but it illustrates why compatibility and cable routing should be checked for the exact device rather than assumed.

What the market figures do—and do not—say

WIRED reported an IDC forecast of around 3 million virtual monitor glasses units in 2026, alongside a forecast of nearly 14 million smart glasses units that year. These are forecasts, not completed sales, and the figures are attributed to IDC through WIRED rather than an independently consulted IDC report. They suggest the display-glasses category is smaller than smart glasses overall, but do not establish which product will suit a particular buyer.

Who should consider display glasses?

  • Consider them if a private, portable screen for seated travel, video, or handheld gaming solves a recurring problem and your device can output video to the glasses.
  • Be cautious if your main need is sharp, small text, extended work sessions, discreet eyewear, or a setup with minimal cables.
  • Choose camera-first smart glasses for a different job: the models discussed here display a connected device’s screen and do not provide the camera features that define that category.

Analyst Anshel Sag, principal analyst at Moor Insights and Strategies, described the appeal this way: “The fundamental thing these glasses do well is that they just work,” and, “You plug them in, and you have faith that you’re going to get a video signal on those glasses that mostly matches what’s on the screen of the device they’re plugged into.” The practical qualification is in the setup: the device must supply a usable signal, and the image and comfort must work for the task you have in mind.
