Could Thousands of Interstellar Objects Be Hiding in the Solar System?

A 2020 simulation suggested thousands of ‘Oumuamua-size interstellar objects could occupy captured solar orbits, conditional on an assumed interstellar abundance.

Thousands of interstellar objects may be present in the solar system, but that figure is a model-based estimate—not a count of confirmed discoveries. A 2020 study by Amir Siraj and Abraham Loeb proposed that thousands of objects roughly the size of 1I/‘Oumuamua could have been captured into high-inclination, Centaur-like orbits, assuming a particular abundance of such objects between stars.

What the “thousands” estimate actually means

Siraj and Loeb presented the estimate in a 2020 abstract for the American Astronomical Society’s Division for Dynamical Astronomy. Their simulations considered how interstellar objects might be captured and occupy orbits resembling those of Centaurs—small bodies orbiting the Sun generally between Jupiter and Neptune. The authors’ estimate depends on an assumed interstellar density of approximately 1015 ‘Oumuamua-size objects per cubic parsec. Read the AAS abstract.

That assumption matters: the estimate is conditional, not an established inventory. The objects have not been individually located and counted, and the cited abstract does not establish that thousands are currently known. The figure describes a possible population produced by simulations using the stated assumed abundance.

How these objects would differ from known interstellar visitors

The proposed population is made up of objects modeled as captured by the Sun and remaining in the solar system. That is different from an interstellar visitor observed passing through on an orbit that takes it back out into interstellar space.

‘Oumuamua and Borisov were passing visitors

1I/‘Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov were detected while traversing the solar system. In Borisov’s case, NASA says the Minor Planet Center and NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies computed its trajectory and confirmed its interstellar origin. NASA’s overview of 2I/Borisov describes that visitor; it does not establish a census of captured objects.

The Oort cloud is a separate population

The Oort cloud is a hypothesized distant reservoir associated with long-period comets, not another name for the proposed captured interstellar objects. NASA notes that astronomers have not directly observed the Oort cloud; they infer its existence from the source of long-period comets whose orbits are disturbed toward the inner solar system. NASA’s explanation of the Oort cloud covers that distinction.

Why astronomers may not have found them

Faintness is a major obstacle. In a 2019 explanation, NASA said that there may be thousands of interstellar objects in the solar system at any given time, but that most are “too faint to be detected with current-day telescopes.” This is explanatory context, not a present-day sensitivity limit or a separate, confirmed count. NASA’s 2019 account of interstellar objects gives its framing.

A dim, distant object can be difficult to distinguish from the much larger population of ordinary solar-system bodies. The modeled objects’ likely orbital characteristics offer another way to narrow a search, but those characteristics do not by themselves confirm an object’s origin.

What a survey might look for

Siraj and Loeb highlighted high-inclination, Centaur-like orbits as a potential clue. Their abstract estimated that the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) could detect several hundred objects from the proposed population. That is a prediction from the study, not an observed survey yield. The estimate belongs alongside the assumed object density and simulated orbital distribution; it should not be treated as a guaranteed discovery total.

Identifying a candidate would require more than noticing an unusual orbit: observations would need to establish its path well enough to assess whether it fits the proposed captured population. The cited abstract offers a modeled search direction, not a practical method for spotting these objects with consumer telescopes or binoculars.

What is known—and what remains uncertain

  • Established in the cited study: Siraj and Loeb’s 2020 simulations produced a conditional estimate of thousands of ‘Oumuamua-size objects in high-inclination, Centaur-like orbits, based on an assumed density of approximately 1015 such objects per cubic parsec.
  • Projected, not observed: The study estimated that LSST could detect several hundred; the figure is not a confirmed yield.
  • Independently reported context: NASA said in 2019 that most interstellar objects may be too faint for current-day telescopes, and it has described Borisov’s interstellar trajectory as confirmed.
  • Not settled by these sources: They do not establish a current consensus population estimate or show whether later studies changed the 2020 figure.

The careful reading of the headline is therefore “thousands may be present under a specific model’s assumptions,” not “astronomers have found thousands” or “the solar system’s interstellar-object population is known.”
