Some NFL fans want teams to hire professional Madden players as situational-football consultants, especially for late-game choices such as clock management. The idea drew attention after a disputed Philadelphia Eagles kickoff decision, but it remains a fan proposal: the reporting available as of October 2026 does not establish that an NFL team has hired a Madden player for this role or that doing so would improve results.

The proposal is narrower than putting video game players in charge of an NFL team. Supporters suggest bringing in experienced Madden competitors to help staffs rehearse or analyze specific situations, including late-game decisions and clock management.

In a report published October 11, 2026, The Spun cited a post by a player using the name Joke (@Jokeeee_), who said that more than 15 years of professional Madden play had given him repeated exposure to game situations. That experience claim is the poster’s own; the report does not independently verify it or establish coaching results.

It’s why coaches need Madden consultants in situational football. They don’t have enough reps.” His comment expresses support, not evidence that a consultant would have made the better call.

Could repeated game scenarios translate to football decisions?
There is a plausible reason to explore the idea: a game can let a player encounter and replay situations quickly, building familiarity with formations, routes, and choices. But an NFL sideline decision is not simply a game prompt. Coaches must account for real players, fatigue, communication, opponent tendencies, timeouts, applicable rules, and the consequences of getting a choice wrong.
The available sources do not compare those forms of expertise or test whether advice from a competitive Madden player improves NFL decisions. They also do not establish what the job would involve: advising a coach, running scenario simulations, or developing analytical tools are different roles. Any recommendation would need to be evaluated against real football conditions before a team relied on it.

What the football-knowledge survey does—and does not—show
Electronic Arts reported results from an online survey conducted with the University of Oregon Warsaw Sports Marketing Center in July 2009. The survey included more than 9,000 respondents and reported a margin of error of ±3 percent. Madden players scored higher than nonplayers in each of five surveyed football-knowledge categories. The reported findings included:

- Madden players consumed, on average, 35 percent more football content than nonplayers.
- Sixty-seven percent of Madden players correctly identified specific passing routes, compared with 48 percent of nonplayers.
- Eighty-one percent correctly identified defensive formations, compared with 67 percent of nonplayers.
- Forty-two percent said they never missed a football game because of other activities, compared with 12 percent of nonplayers.
These are historical survey results reported by EA, not a test of pro gamers’ coaching ability. They describe football knowledge and fandom in 2009; they do not show that gamers can advise an NFL staff today or improve decisions during a game.

Why Madden’s NFL connections are different
Madden’s development has involved football expertise. NFL.com’s coverage of Madden NFL 27 describes EA’s work with former NFL personnel, active players, and Benkert. It also reports that Benkert’s videos discuss pre-snap coverage diagnoses and decision-making, and that he has worked with EA on promotion and design direction.
That is expertise being used to inform a football video game, not an NFL team employing competitive gamers as coaches. EA gameplay creative director Scott O’Gallagher told NFL.com, “I 100 percent stand on simulation. Fixing football problems with football solutions. That’s always the first thing.” He was explaining EA’s game-design approach, not endorsing Madden players for NFL staff roles.

Likewise, EA’s Madden NFL 26 features page describes NFL presentation developed in collaboration with all 32 teams. That collaboration and EA’s stated ambition to make the game realistic do not independently validate it as a coaching tool. Formal competition exists too: EA’s Madden Championship Series 26 rules set out a competitive structure, but do not describe a pathway into NFL coaching employment.
What is known about an NFL team hiring Madden players?
The October 2026 report documents fan advocacy and supportive comments, not a team hiring announcement. The cited NFL.com coverage discusses EA’s game-development work, not NFL clubs hiring competitive players. The effectiveness question remains open: the cited material provides no coaching-outcome study or statement from a team decision-maker validating the proposal.
