Researchers and projects have explored musical patterns as possible content for messages sent into space; that is different from using an instrument to make sound travel through vacuum, and it is not evidence that anyone has received or understood a human message.
What happens in Orion—and what is science fiction?
Orion is described as a psychological science-fiction thriller starring Andrew McCarthy and Drew Van Acker. In the reported plot, Van Acker’s character, Apollo, is recovered after a spacecraft crash with memory loss and uses a handmade instrument to communicate with an alien intelligence. Those are plot details, not a documented scientific event. Tech Times reported a US theatrical opening on October 2, 2026, following a FilmQuest 2025 premiere; release details can change over time.

The story also leaves a crucial physical distinction: music can be a pattern encoded in a signal, but ordinary sound is mechanical vibration and does not travel through the vacuum of space as airborne sound does on Earth. A fictional instrument would need some other transmission mechanism—such as an explicit electromagnetic system—to reach a distant receiver. A musical idea alone does not provide one.
Is music something SETI researchers actually propose?
There is published work on representing musical concepts in interstellar messages. Douglas Vakoch’s paper, “An Iconic Approach to Communicating Musical Concepts in Interstellar Messages,” is identified in the Tech Times report. The idea, as summarized there, is that some musical relationships can be described mathematically and might therefore offer candidates for communication across cultures or species.
#1 Best Overall
That is a proposal about how a message might be structured, not evidence that music is universal. Mathematical relationships such as frequency ratios do not establish that a nonhuman listener would perceive them as music, assign them human meanings, or decode a composer’s intent. The paper’s argument should not be treated as proof of any of those outcomes.
How musical messages differ from SETI searches
The SETI Institute describes SETI as the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, with most searches using large antennas and radio telescopes to listen for signals from other star systems; some searches look for laser flashes. Sending a deliberate message is a different activity, commonly called messaging extraterrestrial intelligence, or METI.

| Question | SETI | METI |
|---|---|---|
| What is being done? | Searching for signals that may have come from beyond Earth. | Deliberately transmitting a signal or message. |
| Where does music fit? | It might be content someone hopes to identify or decode, but a search is not itself a musical transmission. | Music or musical patterns may be included as a proposed message format. |
| What does the activity establish? | A signal candidate requires verification; an unusual signal alone is not confirmation. | A human transmission establishes that a message was sent, not that it was received or understood. |
The SETI Institute says no extraterrestrial signal has been confirmed. It notes that repeat detection and observations by other observatories matter when assessing a candidate. Even detecting a signal would not automatically reveal whether it contains a message or what that message means.
What real music-related space messages have been sent?
Sónar Calling GJ273b
According to Tech Times, the Sónar Calling GJ273b project—organized by METI International with the Sónar music festival and the Catalonia Institute of Space Studies—sent musician-composed pieces toward Luyten’s Star beginning in October 2017, followed by another transmission in May 2018. The report describes the musical form as carrying scientific information. This is an example of humans transmitting a designed message, not evidence of contact or comprehension.

The Voyager Golden Record
The same report says the Voyager Golden Record, launched in 1977, included 27 musical pieces from cultures around the world, alongside greetings, nature sounds, and images. That figure is attributed to Tech Times’s reporting. The record is a human-created artifact carried aboard spacecraft; its inclusion of music does not show that an extraterrestrial recipient has found, played, or understood it. Tech Times’s account is the source for the detail here.
What can we learn from a simulated message?
A Sign in Space was an Earth-based exercise announced by the SETI Institute on May 22, 2023. ESA’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter transmitted a simulated encoded message to Earth; the Allen Telescope Array, Green Bank Telescope, and Medicina radio observatory received it, and the message was made available for public decoding. It rehearsed how people might receive and interpret an unfamiliar signal. It was neither an extraterrestrial transmission nor a detection from an alien civilization.

Why a signal’s meaning is harder than detecting it
Finding a signal and understanding it are separate problems. The SETI Institute notes that radio searches often look for narrow-band signals, while receiver averaging can make rapid modulation—the part that may carry a message—harder to detect. A signal designed for communication might use mathematics, science, or simple pictures to establish common ground; an incidental signal could be much harder to interpret. The institute’s FAQ discusses these limits without suggesting that any particular message format is guaranteed to work.

Detection, analysis, verification, announcement, and response are also distinct stages. The International Academy of Astronautics SETI Permanent Committee protocol index covers those topics and lists a 2026 update to its Declaration of Principles. The index alone does not establish the details of that update, so no specific response rule should be inferred from its listing.

So, could music communicate with aliens?
Music could be used as one possible structure or component in a deliberately designed message. That is a possibility explored in published work and reflected in human projects such as the Sónar transmission and the Voyager record. It remains a question of message design—not a demonstrated universal language, not a way for an ordinary instrument to send sound through space, and not a confirmed first-contact method.
