In a small home-based pilot, 12 middle-aged Japanese women had better results on some sleep measures while using the study’s root oil than while using an unscented control. That is an early signal—not proof that Hinoki oil treats insomnia, or that ordinary retail Hinoki oil has the same effect.
What is the Japanese tree oil in the study?
The researchers tested Kagawa Hinoki root essential oil (KHREO), made from Hinoki roots cultivated in Kagawa Prefecture. It is not interchangeable by default with Hinoki oil made from leaves or branches, and the results do not establish that commercial Hinoki oils match the study material.

The study oil’s most abundant reported volatile compounds were α-pinene, δ-cadinene, γ-cadinene, limonene, and α-muurolene. Those findings describe that particular material; they should not be taken as a chemical profile for every product labeled Hinoki oil. The oil was supplied by Ouken Co., Ltd., but the study and university release do not establish that the tested oil is sold as a consumer product.

Zennifa and colleagues’ article, “Sleep improvement by Kagawa Hinoki root volatiles in middle-aged women: a home-based pilot study,” was published in the Journal of Wood Science on September 1, 2026. In this single-blind crossover study, 12 Japanese women aged 35 to 60 (mean age 46, standard deviation 6.72) used the root oil for two weeks and an unscented squalane-oil control for two weeks.

After 13 days of exposure, the authors reported better questionnaire results for sleepiness upon awakening and fatigue recovery during the oil condition than during control, along with fewer nighttime awakenings recorded by smartwatch. After seven days, EEG measurements showed increased slow-wave activity around sleep onset, which the authors interpreted as consistent with deeper sleep. These are selected outcomes in a small pilot, not evidence of a large or clinically established effect.
How did participants use the oil at home?
Before bed, participants put three drops of the assigned oil in a paper cup and inhaled the aroma for 10 seconds. They then kept the cup about 30 centimeters from the nose overnight. The researchers assessed sleep from several angles: a wearable EEG headband, smartwatch measures, and responses to the OSA sleep inventory MA questionnaire.

How much confidence should you put in the result?
- Very few participants: The findings came from 12 women in a specific age range and region. They do not establish that the same outcomes apply to men, younger adults, or other groups.
- Limited study design: The study was single blind, and its measures included wearable-device data and self-reported questionnaire responses.
- Not an insomnia treatment trial: The results do not show that the oil treats diagnosed sleep disorders or replaces established care.
- One specific oil: The study did not compare different oils or retail products, so it cannot establish that another Hinoki oil—or any product sold as Japanese cypress oil—will produce the same results.
Kyushu University’s September 16, 2026 research release quotes Associate Professor Kuniyoshi Shimizu as saying the team wanted to explore whether using underused Hinoki roots for essential oil could add value and whether the resulting oil could improve sleep. Shimizu also said that combining physiological measurements with participants’ subjective assessments allowed the team to examine sleep under everyday home conditions. Those aims and methods provide context, but they do not remove the limits of a 12-person pilot.

Should you try Hinoki oil for sleep?
The study makes Hinoki root oil worth investigating, but it does not justify treating it as a proven sleep aid. If you encounter a product labeled Hinoki essential oil, do not assume it is root-derived, chemically equivalent to KHREO, or supported by this study. The researchers did not establish an effective dose for consumers, and the university says appropriate products and usage conditions still need study.
For readers considering aroma use, the key distinction is between the narrow method tested—three drops in a cup, a brief inhalation, then the cup near the nose overnight—and a general recommendation. The study tested that approach with its particular oil in its participants; it did not validate other products or establish that the routine is suitable for everyone.
