Possibly—but the evidence does not yet show that the featured lateral-flow HPV test increases detection rates in resource-poor settings. It is a research-stage prototype for HPV16 and HPV18, evaluated with synthetic and clinical samples. Separate implementation research in India shows that self-collected HPV screening can reach people in different settings, but participation and follow-up varied. A test can make screening easier to deliver; it cannot, by itself, establish that more precancers are found or treated.
What the lateral-flow HPV test does
The 2023 NATflow study describes a sample-to-answer prototype that combines isothermal DNA amplification with a lateral-flow readout. The aim is to detect HPV16 and HPV18 DNA without relying on complex laboratory instrumentation. The study evaluated the integrated assay using synthetic samples, provider-collected clinical samples in the United States, and self-collected clinical samples in Mozambique. Those evaluations establish prototype feasibility, not routine-program effectiveness or commercial availability. Read the prototype study.

The prototype targets HPV16 and HPV18, not every high-risk HPV type. The study describes broader genotype coverage as future potential; it should not be assumed in interpreting the reported results.

| Measure | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Analytical limit of detection | 1,000 HPV16 or HPV18 DNA copies per test | A laboratory assay measure for detecting target DNA, not a clinical sensitivity estimate. |
| Workflow | Six user steps; results in 45 minutes | Prototype study characteristics, not a guarantee of field performance. |
| Estimated test cost | Below $5 per test | Projected by the study authors, not a verified retail or procurement price and not the full cost of screening and follow-up. |
| Estimated instrumentation cost | Below $1,000 | A study projection, not a current product specification or confirmed purchase price. |
These figures come from the 2023 prototype study. A low analytical detection threshold does not establish how accurately a test identifies precancer in a screening population, and projected component costs do not show what it would cost to run a complete program.

What “increase detection rates” would need to mean
Several different outcomes can be described casually as detection, but they answer different questions:
- Analytical detection: whether the assay detects target DNA under defined test conditions.
- Clinical performance: how well it identifies disease or precancer in the intended population compared with an appropriate reference method.
- Screening participation: how many eligible people complete screening.
- Detection yield: how many positive tests or precancer cases are found among those screened. Yield depends on the population, specimen, test, and follow-up.
- Program impact: whether people with positive results complete triage and receive appropriate management, and whether the program improves health outcomes.
A simpler point-of-care workflow could plausibly help programs offer screening where laboratory access is limited. But proving increased detection would require evidence beyond a prototype’s ability to detect HPV DNA: clinical validation in the intended population and evidence that screening, confirmation or triage, and care can be completed.

What implementation evidence from India shows
A 2024 pragmatic implementation study in Tamil Nadu examined self-collected HPV screening in tribal, rural, and urban-slum settings over eight months. Screening participation was about 30% overall, but both participation and HPV positivity differed by setting. Triage follow-up—the next step for people needing further assessment—was also uneven. See the PLOS ONE study.
| Study setting | Screening participation | HPV positivity | Triage follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tribal | 31.0% | 12.1% | 56.1% |
| Urban-slum | 26.7% | 3.1% | 45.5% |
| Rural | 32.9% | 5.5% | 84.6% |
These are separate outcomes, not interchangeable measures of a test’s detection rate. For example, a higher HPV positivity percentage does not by itself mean a program screened more people or found more precancers. The study’s 30.3% overall participation figure covers its three settings; the setting-specific figures show why a single average can conceal differences in access and follow-through.

Why those results do not validate the lateral-flow prototype
The India program combined self-sampling with community education, trained health workers, clinical testing capacity, triage, and treatment pathways. It used the careHPV test at a secondary care center—not the NATflow lateral-flow prototype. Its participation results therefore cannot be attributed to lateral-flow detection.
The study authors describe adaptations such as outreach follow-up and bringing colposcopy and treatment closer to remote tribal communities. Those are practical clues about program design, not proof that a particular test caused higher detection. The study was conducted in one state in south India, had no control arm, did not deliver the program through government primary health centers, and did not assess cost effectiveness. Its findings support the importance of implementation choices while limiting causal conclusions.

- Composition: As a pressure tester kit, it contains a variety of professional tools required for high-pressure and air leak tests. The core component is a high-precision pressure test gauge. In addition, the kit is equipped with various connecting pipes and adapter fittings. This pressure gauge can accurately measure the pressure values in the system, providing accurate data for determining whether the system is operating normally
- Easy to Operate: For conducting air leak test tools, merely apply shop air through the sensor port or an accessible oil rail port, while connecting 12V to the IPR. There’s no requirement to detach the IPR valve or use adapters for its replacement. Additionally, sophisticated diagnostic scan tools aren’t necessary
- Function: This Hpop Test Tool Kit serves dual functions. The high-pressure testing function enables precise measurement of engine high-pressure systems like the fuel injection system, helping to determine normal pressure operation and troubleshoot issues such as power loss or abnormal noises. The air leak testing function detects leaks in intake, exhaust, and cooling systems, and can further identify leak locations with auxiliary tools
What WHO’s point-of-care benchmark adds
On 18 November 2024, WHO published target product profiles for HPV nucleic-acid tests aligned with screening guidelines, including separate profiles for laboratory and point-of-care use. These profiles describe product-development and public-health requirements; they do not certify that the NATflow prototype meets them. Read WHO’s target product profiles.

When assessing a point-of-care HPV test, a useful comparison should consider genotype coverage, clinical sensitivity and specificity for precancer, specimen types and self-collection options, operator steps, time to result, equipment and power needs, environmental requirements, and the cost of the full workflow. It should also ask whether a positive result can be connected to timely triage and treatment. Performance should be compared using appropriate reference standards and populations—not analytical detection limits alone.

What evidence would show that detection improves?
A convincing case would connect test performance to outcomes along the screening pathway. That means showing that the assay works reliably with the intended specimens and users, that clinical performance is suitable for the intended screening population, and that people with positive results can reach triage and treatment. A program-level comparison would also need to measure who was eligible, who participated, what disease or precancer was found, and whether follow-up was completed.
Adjacent evidence from Papua New Guinea found strong agreement between self-collected vaginal specimens tested with Xpert HPV and clinician-collected cervical specimens. This supports evaluating self-collection in high-burden, lower-resource settings, but Xpert HPV is a different molecular platform and the study does not validate the lateral-flow prototype. See the 2018 study.
For now, the most defensible conclusion is that lateral-flow detection is a promising design direction for making HPV testing more accessible—not a demonstrated way to increase population detection. The prototype’s feasibility findings and the India implementation experience address different questions, and neither establishes that this specific test increases screening yield or reduces cervical cancer.
