Check the power connection and the router’s model-specific lights, then separate power trouble from an internet connection failure.
Could a bad outlet make a router stop working?
Yes. A faulty outlet or power strip can prevent a router from receiving steady power. ASUS recommends trying another outlet as part of checking a router that will not power on, and NETGEAR recommends testing a wall outlet directly. Use an outlet you know works; if the router starts behaving normally, that points to the original outlet or power strip as a possible cause, though it does not establish a definitive diagnosis.

Check the power path before diagnosing the router
- Note what is happening before you change anything: no power light, repeated restarts, Wi-Fi available but no internet, or trouble on just one device. These symptoms lead to different checks.
- Make sure the power adapter is firmly connected to the router and the outlet. Look over the cable for visible damage, but do not open the outlet, adapter, or router. ASUS advises taking basic electrical safety precautions during power checks.
- Try a known-working outlet, preferably plugging directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip. If you use an extension cord or strip, check it separately rather than assuming it works.
- Use the adapter supplied with the router. NETGEAR cautions that a different adapter may not work correctly; routers can require model-specific power specifications, so do not substitute an unknown adapter.
- Check the router’s power button and any LED control. Look up the exact model’s manual or support guide before treating a dark light as evidence of failure: light meanings and controls vary, and a Wi-Fi light may be switched off while the router itself is powered.
ASUS’s no-power troubleshooting guidance and TP-Link’s no-LED checks for DSL modem routers both include trying a different outlet and checking the original power adapter. TP-Link’s instructions apply to the modem-router product family covered by that page; consult your own model’s guide for its light meanings and controls.

A router can be powered on while the internet connection is down. First check whether the problem affects one device or every device connected to the network. If only one device is affected, the router may not be the source of the problem. If all devices are offline, check the status lights on both the router and modem, if they are separate, and look for an outage notice from your internet provider. TP-Link’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide recommends this one-device-versus-all-devices distinction and checking for ISP outages.

Restart separate modem and router units in order
If you have a standalone modem and a separate router, restart the modem first. Wait for its connection lights to settle and for it to establish its ISP connection; then power up the router. The time required and the meaning of the lights vary by device. Restarting temporarily disconnects people and devices using the network. Microsoft explains the restart process in its Ethernet troubleshooting guide, and NETGEAR’s home-network power-cycle instructions also call for starting with the modem.
If you have a single modem-router gateway, there is no separate modem and router to restart in sequence. Follow that device’s own restart instructions instead of applying the two-unit order.

When the problem points beyond the router
If a computer connected directly to the modem cannot get online, TP-Link says the modem or ISP is implicated rather than the router. Check the provider’s outage information and contact the provider if the connection still does not work. See TP-Link’s WAN troubleshooting guide for this direct-modem check.
If the router still shows no LEDs after checking a known-working outlet, its supplied adapter, cable connections, power controls, and the model’s guide, contact the router manufacturer’s support. Have the exact model and hardware details ready; TP-Link’s no-LED support guidance describes escalation when those checks do not resolve the problem.
