The workspace is easier to learn if you focus first on the drawing page, toolbox, property bar, and status bar; the other controls become useful as you work.
The labels and menu paths below follow Corel’s Windows Help. They can differ by version and platform, so treat them as a guide and check the equivalent controls in your installed release.

Get oriented in the CorelDRAW workspace
CorelDRAW’s application window contains many controls, but you do not need to memorize them before starting a drawing. Begin with the areas that directly shape what you see and do:
- Drawing page: the page inside the larger drawing window. It represents the printable area.
- Toolbox: tools for creating and modifying objects. Some tools are grouped into flyouts; a small arrow on a tool button indicates related tools. Click the arrow to open them.
- Property bar: context-sensitive controls that change according to the active tool or task. Expect it to look different when you select a different tool.
- Status bar: information about the selected object and other document details.
Other areas help with specific tasks: the menu bar contains pull-down commands, the toolbar provides shortcuts, rulers help locate and size objects, and dockers collect task-related controls. The document navigator helps manage pages; the document palette and color palette provide color controls. Corel’s application-window reference, toolbox help, and property-bar help describe these areas.

Choose a blank document, preset, or template
Corel’s Help describes three ways to begin: a blank page, a preset, or a template. Use a blank document when you want to set up the drawing yourself; a preset when a documented starting configuration suits the project; and a template when you want an existing structure that you can customize. Corel’s Windows Help calls the setup area the Document Settings tab and describes a separate Templates tab. The redesigned two-tab dialog was documented in Corel’s September 2022 subscriber update; that date documents the redesign, not the exact appearance of every later release or platform.
Presets can prefill page size and orientation, primary color mode, units, and resolution. Corel documents categories such as print, web, device-specific, and social, with options to search, filter, and sort presets. Check the resulting values rather than assuming a preset matches your intended output.

Create a new document
- Open the new-document flow from the Welcome screen’s New document command, choose File > New, or click the New button on the standard toolbar.
- Enter a filename in the dialog.
- Choose a preset thumbnail or configure the document properties directly. Choose the Templates tab instead if you want to start from a template.
- Set the page count if the drawing needs more than one page.
- Choose the primary color mode—RGB or CMYK—and the drawing units.
- Select a page size, or enter custom width and height, then choose portrait or landscape orientation.
- Set grayscale profile or rendering intent options if they are relevant and shown. These color-management choices depend on the application’s default color-management settings.
- Create the drawing.
This sequence follows Corel’s Windows Help for starting and opening drawings. If you select a preset, review the properties it has filled in before creating the document.

Choose settings for the intended output
Page size and orientation
Set dimensions for the output or working area you need, using a listed size or custom width and height. Choose portrait or landscape according to the layout. Neither orientation nor a preset is inherently right for every project.

Units and page count
Select units that fit the project and your working convention. Set more than one page when the work requires multiple pages; otherwise, use the page count appropriate to the document.
RGB or CMYK
The primary color mode sets the document’s default color mode. Corel says it affects how colors work in effects and the default mode used for export. It does not prevent you from applying colors from another color palette. Choose according to the output workflow rather than treating either mode as universally correct.

Color-management options
The documented creation flow may show grayscale profile and rendering intent settings. What appears depends on the application’s default color-management settings; use the choices relevant to your workflow rather than changing them solely because they are present.
If the new-document dialog is missing
Corel documents a preference that hides the dialog and reuses the last settings. On Windows, open Tools > Options > CorelDRAW > General and enable the Show New Document dialog box option. The Mac user guide gives a different path: CorelDRAW > Preferences > CorelDRAW > General. The precise label or location can vary across releases, so consult the help for your installed version if it differs. See Corel’s startup settings help for the Windows option.
