There is no developer-published minimum RAM or CPU specification for a Core Keeper dedicated server. Steam’s 8 GB RAM figure is the Windows game-client requirement, not a server requirement. For planning, a recent ServerScout guide estimates about 2 GB RAM for a small vanilla group, 3–4 GB for larger or heavily explored worlds, and roughly 6 GB for busy modded play. Those numbers are estimates, not official requirements or independently verified benchmarks. Start with headroom and monitor the machine under your group’s real workload.

What the requirements actually mean
A dedicated server runs the world simulation and accepts player connections without rendering the game. That makes its resource profile different from the game client. Steam’s 2023 Windows listing specifies 8 GB of RAM for the client, along with client processor and graphics requirements. It does not state how much memory a headless dedicated server needs, so using “8 GB minimum” as a server specification is inaccurate.

The available server references provide installation instructions and configuration arguments, but no official minimum RAM, CPU model or clock speed. Any hardware number presented below should therefore be treated as a starting point for capacity planning. World size, how much of the map has been explored, simultaneous players, mods, background services and whether the host is also playing can all change usage.
RAM planning by group size
ServerScout’s recent guide gives the following third-party planning estimates. They are not measurements published by the Core Keeper developer, and the guide does not document a standardized benchmark method.

| Typical workload | ServerScout RAM estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 players, vanilla | About 2 GB | A starting point for a small world with limited concurrent activity; leave additional headroom for the operating system and other services. |
| Five to six players or a more developed world | About 3 GB | Exploration and accumulated world data can push use above a minimal small-group allocation. |
| Seven to 10 players | About 4 GB | Still an estimate; busy sessions, large explored areas or other processes may require more. |
| Heavily modded or especially busy play | Around 6 GB | A rough planning figure, not a guaranteed requirement or a performance target. |
These figures describe memory allocation, not a promise that a server will remain stable at a particular player count. A machine with 4 GB installed RAM may have substantially less available after the operating system, monitoring tools, backups or a graphical desktop are loaded. Leave practical headroom rather than allocating nearly all physical memory to the server.
CPU requirements: prioritize per-core speed
ServerScout’s CPU guidance is also an estimate. It favors a few fast cores over a large number of slow cores, because simulation and world activity can be sensitive to per-core performance. The guide suggests two fast cores for a small group and three to four for heavier scenarios. It does not establish an official clock-speed minimum, and no developer benchmark was identified.
- Small vanilla group: begin with a modern two-core allocation or better, provided the cores are not heavily shared with unrelated workloads.
- More players or a developed world: reserve additional CPU capacity and watch utilization during exploration, combat and building sessions.
- Mods or several simultaneous activities: plan for three to four fast cores as a starting estimate, then validate with monitoring rather than assuming the estimate guarantees smooth play.
High overall CPU percentage is not the only warning sign. A single busy core can produce simulation delays while total utilization appears moderate. Check per-core graphs, server responsiveness and player reports during the busiest events your group actually generates.
How player limits work
Player capacity is controlled by software settings, not solely by RAM. A Core Keeper Codex reference for package version 1.2.1.5, verified on September 7, 2026, lists a default maximum of eight players and warns that raising the limit may require more resources or destabilize a session. A separate community Docker configuration lists a default MAX_PLAYERS value of 10. The difference shows why there is no universal number to copy between installations.

Check the configuration shipped with your installed server package and treat its default as the starting point. If you increase the cap:
- Measure memory and per-core CPU use with the expected number of concurrent players.
- Test a busy area, not just a fresh world at spawn.
- Keep a backup before changing the limit.
- Reduce the cap again if players see delayed actions, disconnects or world-save problems.
A configured connection port can enable direct IP connections. The Codex reference says that, without the port setting, the server uses Steam relay and does not accept direct IP connections; it also describes setting a port as enabling cross-play. Platform support and defaults can change between releases, so verify the current package notes before treating cross-platform access as guaranteed.

Choose a hosting approach
Self-host on a PC or always-on server
Self-hosting gives you control over files, updates, configuration and backups. Install the dedicated-server package through Steam or SteamCMD, launch it once so it creates its data structure, and keep the process running whenever players need access. A community setup guide notes that the worlds folder may not appear until the first save; do not assume an empty folder means installation failed.
This option works best when the machine can remain powered on, has reliable upstream connectivity and is not competing with demanding desktop applications. If the same computer is used to play, its game client and server share CPU, RAM and disk resources. That arrangement can work for a small group, but monitor it during a full session instead of relying on the client’s 8 GB requirement.

Run a container
Community Docker tooling can simplify repeatable deployment, environment variables and restarts. The escapingnetwork project documents image variants for ARM devices, including Raspberry Pi 3, 4 and 5, as well as M-series Macs and other systems. Image support only means the software can be deployed on those architectures; it does not prove that every model can serve a particular player count or a large world smoothly.
For a container, confirm the host’s available memory, CPU limits and storage path before starting. Persist the world directory outside the container so an image replacement does not remove saves. Set an explicit restart policy only after you have a backup and understand how logs and failed updates are handled.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Rent managed game hosting
A managed server can keep the world online when the usual host’s PC is off and removes much of the operating-system maintenance. In exchange, you trade some control for a recurring fee and the provider’s resource policy. No particular provider or plan has been verified here, so compare the actual allocation rather than marketing labels.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Assigned RAM and CPU | “Unlimited” slots do not tell you how much hardware the process can use. Look for defined memory and CPU allocations and whether upgrades are possible. |
| Player limit | Confirm the configured cap and whether changing it is allowed. |
| Region and latency | Choose a location reasonably central to the group. This is general low-latency advice, not a measured Core Keeper comparison. |
| Backups and restore | Verify schedule, retention and whether you can download or restore an earlier world. |
| Restart and update controls | Check scheduled restarts, manual restarts, version changes and rollback procedures. |
| Port and connection mode | Determine whether players use Steam relay or whether direct-IP access requires a port you can configure. |
| Cancellation terms | Know how to retrieve world files before a plan ends and whether storage or transfer fees apply. |
Install and configure a dedicated server
- Choose the host. Select an always-on PC, a server operating system, a supported container host or a managed plan with enough headroom for your intended workload.
- Install the package. In Steam, open the Library and show the Tools entries, then install the Core Keeper dedicated-server package if it is listed. SteamCMD can install the same package non-interactively; use the app and login syntax documented with the current package rather than copying an outdated command.
- Launch once. Start the server and allow it to create its configuration and save directories. The worlds directory may be created only after the first world save.
- Set the world and player options. Edit the installed configuration using the names and defaults supplied with your package. Confirm the current maximum-player setting; do not assume the Codex value of eight or the Docker example’s value of 10 applies to every release.
- Choose a connection method. With no configured port, the Codex reference says connections use Steam relay. If you need direct IP access, set an available port, permit it through the host firewall and router, and test from outside the local network.
- Save and restart. Stop the process cleanly before changing configuration, then restart and confirm the intended world, player cap and connection mode in the logs.
- Back up before sharing. Copy the world files while the server is stopped or after a verified save. The community setup guide specifically recommends backups before distributing a game code publicly.
Networking, location and uptime
A central machine with reliable connectivity generally gives a geographically mixed group a better chance of consistent latency. Wired Ethernet is preferable to an unstable wireless link for a self-hosted machine, although no measured Core Keeper benchmark establishes a particular cable, speed or router as necessary. A standard Cat6 cable is an optional way to connect a compatible host by wire; it is not a server requirement.

Uptime is a separate decision from hardware capacity. A powerful desktop that sleeps when its owner leaves cannot provide continuous access. If the world must be available independently of one player, use an always-on server or managed hosting, and verify that automatic restarts do not interrupt saves or updates unexpectedly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monitor the server instead of guessing
Start with the estimate that matches your group, leave headroom, and observe real sessions. Record memory use after several players have explored, built and returned to established areas. Check per-core CPU load, disk space, network stability and the server log for repeated errors.
- Memory approaches the host limit: stop nonessential services, increase the allocation or move to a machine with more RAM before adding players or mods.
- One core remains saturated: reduce concurrent activity or player count, remove expensive mods and move the process to faster dedicated cores.
- Players experience lag while resources look low: inspect relay or router latency, packet loss, wireless interference and geographic distance; not every delay is a RAM problem.
- The world fails to load after a change: stop the server, restore the last known-good configuration or backup, and reapply one change at a time.
- Players cannot connect directly: verify the configured port, firewall rule, router forwarding and whether the package is intentionally using Steam relay.
Practical sizing examples
Two to four friends, vanilla world
Use the roughly 2 GB ServerScout estimate as a starting point, with two fast cores and additional host headroom. A small always-on computer can be suitable if monitoring shows stable memory and CPU use during exploration. Do not infer that any particular Raspberry Pi model will perform adequately without testing the exact world and player activity.
Five to 10 players in an established world
Plan around the guide’s 3–4 GB estimates and reserve more CPU capacity than a minimal group. Confirm the package’s player cap, then test with the full group in the most developed areas. A machine hosting other game servers, backups or desktop applications may need more installed RAM even when the server’s nominal estimate is unchanged.

Modded or continuously active community
Use the approximately 6 GB figure only as a rough starting estimate for busy modded play. Verify mod compatibility, allocate extra memory for the operating system and monitor after updates. If the group needs dependable 24-hour access, managed hosting can reduce maintenance, but only a plan with clearly stated CPU, RAM, backups and restart controls is comparable to self-hosting.
What is and is not established
The reliable conclusion is narrower than many search snippets suggest: Core Keeper has a dedicated server distributed through Steam and SteamCMD, but the reviewed official-facing materials do not publish a server RAM or CPU minimum. The 8 GB Steam number belongs to the Windows client. Third-party estimates are useful for budgeting hardware, while actual suitability depends on your world, mods, player count and host contention.

Package defaults can also differ. The Codex reference describes version 1.2.1.5 and an eight-player default, whereas a community Docker configuration uses 10. Recheck the installed package, release notes and platform behavior when you deploy, especially if cross-platform access or a higher player cap is important.
