Neither type is universally better. Choose a cordless hammer drill when mobility matters or the work takes you away from outlets; choose a corded model when you will work near a suitable outlet for long sessions and want to avoid battery changes and charging interruptions. The deciding factors are your workload, material and hole size, access to power, battery platform and total kit cost.
When is a cordless hammer drill the better choice?
A cordless model is the more convenient option when you move between work areas, drill overhead, work outdoors or cannot readily reach an outlet. Its runtime varies with the battery, workload, bit and material, so a demanding job may require spare compatible batteries or pauses to recharge.

Check what comes in the package before buying. For example, DEWALT lists its DCD1007B as a 20V MAX XR brushless, 1/2-inch, three-speed hammer drill sold tool-only; the battery and charger are excluded. Its product listing specifies a maximum torque of 2,100 in-lb under DEWALT’s rating method. That manufacturer figure is not an independent comparison with a corded drill.

When is a corded hammer drill the better choice?
A corded drill can suit extended work near a suitable outlet because it does not depend on a battery charge during the session. The trade-off is that the cord limits movement and must be routed so it does not create a hazard or get caught on the work.
As one example, DEWALT lists the DWD520 as a 120V, 10-amp, 1/2-inch variable-speed-reversing hammer drill. It has hammer and drill modes, two speed ranges and a 360-degree locking side handle. These specifications describe that model; they do not establish that corded drills as a class outperform cordless ones.

How to compare cordless and corded options
| Factor | Cordless hammer drill | Corded hammer drill |
|---|---|---|
| Power access and mobility | Useful where outlets are unavailable or the work moves. Runtime depends on the battery and workload. | Requires a suitable outlet; the cord limits reach and needs safe routing. Avoids battery charging interruptions while connected to power. |
| Session length and workload | Consider whether the battery capacity and number of compatible batteries suit the job. | Can be convenient for sustained work near power, though performance still varies by model and application. |
| Battery platform and kit cost | Existing compatible batteries may affect the overall value. Check whether the listing includes a battery and charger. | No drill battery is needed for operation, but confirm the electrical supply and what accessories the package includes. |
| Material, bit and hole size | Check the model’s stated applications and capacity, then choose a bit suited to the material and chuck. | Use the same checks: corded power alone does not establish capacity for a particular hole or material. |
| Speed, control and handling | Compare speed settings, controls, weight and handle design for the work you expect to do. | Compare those same model-specific features, including the side handle and speed control. |
| Evidence for a direct performance comparison | The cited manufacturer pages do not provide a controlled head-to-head test between matched corded and cordless models. | |
Is a cordless hammer drill powerful enough for masonry?
It can be suitable for some masonry drilling, but “cordless” alone does not answer the question. Check the drill’s specifications and manual for the material and hole size, and consider how many holes you need to make and how continuously you will work. Match the masonry bit to the material, diameter and drill chuck; Bosch lists concrete drill bits among its accessories.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA hammer drill’s impact mode is intended for drilling masonry, but it is not automatically a substitute for a rotary hammer on frequent or demanding concrete work. Follow the capacity and application guidance for the specific tool. Bosch describes hammer drills as tools for drilling and masonry applications and sells both corded and cordless hammer-drill categories; that does not mean every model is suited to every masonry task.

Ensure the handle is firmly fastened to the machine to prevent detachment during operation. Additionally, a flexible shaft helps you tackle jobs in tight spaces easily. The single brushless drill with battery weigh only 4.12lbs/1.87kg, allowing for effortless one-handed operation
Are cordless torque and corded power figures directly comparable?
Not necessarily. DEWALT’s DCD1007B page gives a maximum brake-torque rating of 2,100 in-lb. DEWALT Support says the company uses UWO (Unit Watts Out) to describe cordless drill output rather than disclosing torque; its example is a DCD996 rated at 820 UWO with a 5Ah DCB205 battery. Torque and UWO are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable. Neither figure, on its own, is a controlled comparison against the 120V, 10-amp rating of the DWD520.
How should you use a hammer drill safely?
- Wear hearing and eye protection, secure the workpiece, and use the auxiliary handle when supplied.
- Manage dust with suitable respiratory protection for the application.
- Keep a firm grip and be prepared for reaction torque if the bit binds.
- Route a cord so it stays clear of the bit, work area and walkways.
- Follow the manual for the exact model. Bosch’s GSB18V-535C/GSR18V-535C manual warns: “Wear ear protectors when impact drilling. Exposure to noise can cause hearing loss.”
Which type should you choose?
Choose cordless if mobility, remote access or an existing compatible battery platform matters most. Choose corded if your work is close to a suitable outlet and you value uninterrupted access to mains power during longer sessions. Before buying, compare the intended material and hole size, duty cycle, handling features and the full kit contents—not just a headline power figure.
