Diagrams.net explains that imported VSDX files can look different because Visio and diagrams.net use different file models and rendering environments. It specifically identifies embedded EMF images as content that will not be imported. That is a documented limitation, not a claim that every other feature will fail.

During a trial import, compare the result with the original. Focus on fonts and text wrapping, embedded images, line and shape placement, page layout, and any interactive behavior your workflow depends on. Whether any of these changes depends on the particular diagram.

How to test a conversion safely
- Keep the original Visio file untouched and make a separate copy to test.
- Open the copy in your candidate application. For VSDX, diagrams.net explicitly documents import; if you need another route, check the format and version limits above.
- Inspect the imported diagram against the original, including the text, images, layout and behavior that matter to your use case.
- If it is acceptable, save a converted editable copy and reopen it to verify the saved result. Keep the original available for collaborators who need Visio fidelity.
- Before converting a library of diagrams, agree with collaborators on the application and delivery format, then test representative files.
When PDF or image export is the better handoff
If the recipient only needs to view the diagram, rather than edit it, an export can avoid asking them to import a Visio file. Diagrams.net documents export choices including PNG, SVG and PDF. A PDF or image is a visual handoff, not a replacement for a fully editable diagram; retain a separate native copy when editing matters. Diagrams.net export documentation.
