To install a friend’s Garry’s Mod addon manually, copy its complete folder into garrysmod/addons/ in your game installation. Keep the addon’s files together and preserve their folder structure. If your friend has uploaded the addon to the Workshop, you can usually find it in the game’s Friends Uploads view instead.
Copy the addon folder into the right location
Garry’s Mod calls its mods “addons.” Each addon needs its own folder inside garrysmod/addons/; the addon’s files should remain inside that folder rather than being moved to the garrysmod/ root or merged into another addon. See Facepunch’s Lua Folder Structure and Addon Creation documentation.

- Close Garry’s Mod. Copying while the game is closed avoids changing addon files while it is running.
- Get the complete folder from your friend. They can send the folder as-is or put it in an archive first. Use a file-transfer method you both have available, such as a shared network location, cloud storage, or a USB drive.
- Find your Garry’s Mod installation. In Steam, open Library, right-click Garry’s Mod, choose Manage, then Browse local files.
- Open the addon directory. In the game files, open
garrysmod, thenaddons. If anaddonsfolder is missing, create it ingarrysmod. - Place the addon folder inside. The resulting layout should look like
.../garrysmod/addons/addon_folder/..., with the addon’s files and any subfolders insideaddon_folder. - Launch Garry’s Mod and check the addon. Look for it in the relevant in-game menu or test the feature it provides.
If the addon does not appear or work
- Check that the addon folder is directly inside
garrysmod/addons/, rather than directly insidegarrysmod/. - Check for an accidental extra folder level. For example, a layout like
garrysmod/addons/addon_folder/addon_folder/filesmay be wrong if the actual addon files are one directory deeper than intended. - Make sure the transfer included the complete addon folder and its internal files, not just selected contents.
- Some addons may depend on other content or require a particular structure; copying a folder alone does not establish that those dependencies are present.
When to use a Workshop upload instead
If your friend has uploaded the addon, check the Addons menu’s Friends Uploads view. Subscribing there is generally simpler than transferring files, and the Workshop handles the subscription. A manually copied folder is a local copy, not a Workshop subscription, so the copy does not itself subscribe you or provide Workshop-managed updates. Unsubscribing from a Workshop addon removes it from the game; disabling an addon stops it from loading, but it can still update through Workshop.
