Copy Files Between Servers Without Using Your Laptop as a Relay

Keep file data off your laptop by choosing a transfer method based on where the process runs: scp -R for eligible SSH hosts, or verified server-side copy for supported cloud remotes.

You can transfer files between two SSH servers without routing the file data through your laptop: OpenSSH scp supports remote-to-remote copying with -R, provided the source server can authenticate to and reach the destination. For cloud storage, tools such as rclone may copy data within the storage service, but only when the relevant backends support server-side copying. The key is to check where the transfer process runs—not just whether the connection is encrypted.

Choose a method based on where the bytes should travel

Situation Suitable approach What to check
Two SSH-accessible servers OpenSSH scp -R The source server must reach the destination and authenticate to it without a password prompt. Confirm the installed client’s behavior and path syntax. OpenSSH scp(1) manual
Interactive encrypted file handling SFTP SFTP encrypts its SSH transport, but that alone does not establish that a local client can transfer directly between two remote servers without relaying data. OpenSSH sftp(1) manual
Repeat synchronization, with one path local to the rsync process Rsync over SSH Rsync must be installed on both machines for remote transfers; rsync itself does not support two remote paths in one transfer. rsync(1) manual
Cloud-storage remotes Rclone copy Server-side copying depends on the remote backends. If unsupported, the machine running rclone downloads and uploads the data. rclone copy documentation
The servers cannot connect to each other A reachable intermediary or relay The relay carries the data. It keeps the laptop out of the path only if it runs somewhere else.

Copy between SSH servers with scp -R

OpenSSH scp can copy from one remote host to another. Its -R option makes the connection to the origin host and runs the copy there, so the origin—not your laptop—must connect to and authenticate to the destination. The origin must be able to authenticate without prompting for a password. That typically means the origin’s account and authentication configuration need to permit the connection; protect credentials and do not expose private keys in scripts or command output. The scp(1) manual

Do not confuse -R with -3. The manual describes -3 as transferring between two remote hosts through the local host, and says this is the default mode. If the local host is your laptop, that routing uses its network connection and carries the file data through it. Check your installed manual rather than assuming that a command uses the routing you want.

Remote path syntax, host aliases, ports, wildcards, and shell quoting can vary. In particular, the manual notes that when copying between remote hosts using URI format, a port cannot be specified on the target with -R. Test a small, noncritical file first, and check the manual for your installed client’s options and compatibility notes. OpenSSH has used SFTP by default for scp since OpenSSH 9.0; the legacy SCP protocol can be selected with -O, so behavior can also depend on client version and server support. OpenSSH scp(1) manual

Use SFTP for interactive handling, not as proof of direct routing

SFTP is useful for browsing and managing files interactively. The OpenSSH sftp(1) manual describes it as a file-transfer program that performs operations over encrypted SSH transport. Encryption protects the transport; it does not tell you whether a local client is relaying a transfer between two remote endpoints. The cited manual does not establish that a typical local SFTP client can move data directly from one remote server to another without sending it through the local machine. Confirm the client’s routing before relying on it for that requirement. OpenSSH sftp(1) manual

Use rsync when one endpoint is local to the process

Rsync is designed for file transfer and synchronization, including over a remote shell such as SSH. But it is not a direct two-remote-to-two-remote tool: the rsync(1) manual says it does not support copying files between two remote hosts. It also requires rsync on both machines for remote transfers. rsync(1) manual

“Local” means local to the machine running rsync. If rsync runs on your laptop, that machine is involved in the transfer. If it runs on a server with access to the other endpoint, that server can carry the data instead. Rsync’s delta-transfer approach can reduce data sent when updating an existing destination, which is useful for synchronization; it does not remove the two-remote limitation.

For cloud storage, verify rclone’s server-side copy support

Rclone can ask a storage service to copy data in place, avoiding a download and re-upload, when the relevant remote supports server-side copy. Its documentation says this feature is available on most, not all, remotes. If the backend does not support it, rclone downloads and re-uploads the files through the machine running rclone. The documented server-side-copy behavior applies when the remote names are the same; backend and configuration options can affect what is possible. rclone copy documentation

Rclone’s FAQ also explains that syncing between two remote cloud-storage systems effectively downloads and uploads files, so the machine running rclone needs adequate bandwidth. That may still keep the laptop out of the data path if rclone runs elsewhere, but it is not the same as a server-side copy within the storage service. Check the specific backend pair and inspect verbose logs instead of assuming cloud-to-cloud means server-side.

When learning rclone, its documentation recommends the interactive option to reduce the risk of accidental data loss. Prefer a copy operation when the source should remain intact. Treat move or sync operations with care: check their effects, verify the destination, and do not delete originals until you have confirmed the result. rclone documentation

Plan and verify a transfer safely

  1. Identify the endpoints. Determine whether you are working with SSH hosts or cloud remotes. Note the installed tool versions, paths, and whether the source can reach the destination.
  2. Choose the route. For SSH hosts, assess scp -R and its origin-to-destination authentication requirement. For cloud remotes, check server-side-copy support. If using rsync, run it on a machine where one endpoint is local to that process.
  3. Check access and capacity. Confirm the required accounts and permissions on both ends, and ensure the destination directory has enough space.
  4. Test with a small file. Use a noncritical file to check the path, permissions, authentication, and routing before transferring important data.
  5. Verify before removing the source. Check the command’s exit status and the destination’s file names and sizes. Where appropriate, perform an application-level integrity check. Keep the original until the destination is verified.

These checks are practical safeguards, not a guarantee that every network, account, or storage backend is configured for the selected transfer method.
