If Copilot opens when you sign in to Windows 11, turn it off under Settings > Apps > Startup. If it is missing there, check Task Manager, then the Windows Startup folders. Registry changes are a last resort: identify the exact entry and back up the registry before editing.
First confirm that Copilot is launching at sign-in
A Copilot icon on the taskbar does not by itself mean the app started automatically. Check whether a Copilot window actually opens after you sign in. The taskbar visibility setting and the Copilot-key behavior control how you access Copilot; neither is the same as a Windows startup-app setting. Microsoft documents these controls separately in its Windows startup guidance, Windows keyboard shortcuts guidance, and Copilot access guidance.

Disable Copilot in Windows startup settings
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Find Copilot and switch its toggle off.
- Restart Windows and check whether Copilot still opens after sign-in.
Windows exposes startup controls for applications registered with a startup task. Microsoft describes Settings and Task Manager as ways to configure those applications in its startup-app instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Copilot is not listed in Settings
Check Task Manager
- Right-click Start and open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- If Copilot appears, select it and choose Disable.
- Restart and check the sign-in behavior.
Task Manager shows the registered startup-app list and also provides startup-impact information. Its list is another place to disable a registered entry, not a separate Copilot-specific control.

Check the Startup folders
A shortcut in a Startup folder can cause an application to open when you sign in, even if you do not see it in the startup-app lists. To inspect the folders:
- Press Win + R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter. This opens the current user’s Startup folder. - Look for a Copilot shortcut. If you find one, confirm it is the shortcut responsible before removing it.
- To inspect the folder shared by all users, press Win + R, enter
shell:common startup, and press Enter.
Microsoft lists these folders as a way to find startup applications that do not appear in the startup list. See its Windows startup-app guidance.

Use the registry only if the other checks do not explain the launch
Windows also has startup entries in these documented Run locations:

Changing the registry can have unintended consequences. Back it up before making changes, and do not delete an entry unless you have identified it as Copilot-related and understand what it does. Microsoft’s startup guidance documents these locations and warns users to take care when editing the registry.

If Copilot still opens after you disable it
Use the checks above in order: Settings, Task Manager, the current-user Startup folder, the all-users Startup folder, and then the registry Run locations if needed. Restart after changing a startup entry so you can see whether the behavior has changed.
Microsoft’s general guidance notes that a startup entry with a missing or invalid app path can produce the message “We couldn’t find this app.” That indicates a broken path; it does not establish a Copilot-specific cause or explain why a disabled entry might return. The available guidance does not identify one universal reason for that recurrence. Check the actual entry on your device rather than assuming a particular update, account type, policy, or Copilot setting is responsible.

Keep startup, taskbar, and Copilot-key settings separate
Turning off Copilot’s taskbar visibility changes whether it is shown or accessed from the taskbar; changing the Copilot key changes what that keyboard key does. Those are distinct from disabling automatic launch at sign-in. Microsoft notes that Copilot-key availability and choices can vary with device design, account settings, installed apps, and organization settings. See the Copilot-key settings guidance.
