If Copilot won’t open or respond in Microsoft Edge, first confirm you’re opening the Copilot icon—not another app from Edge’s sidebar—then check the correct profile, update and restart Edge, and investigate connectivity or work-account restrictions if needed. Microsoft says the separate sidebar app list is being retired gradually, but Copilot and the side pane are not affected.
Make sure you’re opening Copilot, not a sidebar app
Microsoft describes Copilot in Edge as a built-in assistant available from the Copilot icon in the browser’s upper-right toolbar. Open a page and select that icon. If you were trying to open a different app pinned in Edge’s sidebar, that is a separate feature: Microsoft is gradually retiring the sidebar app list, while stating that Copilot and the side pane are not affected. The app-list change has no confirmed retirement date. Microsoft’s sidebar update explains the distinction.

For the personal-account setup in Microsoft’s Copilot in Edge guide, sign in to Edge with your personal Microsoft account. Check that you are using the Edge profile you intend to use; a different profile may have different account or organization settings.

Check Edge’s current toolbar and open Settings and more (…) to inspect Copilot and AI settings. The exact placement and available controls can vary by Edge version, account type, and organization policy, so a particular toggle may not appear for everyone. Microsoft’s current guide uses the Copilot and AI settings category for Copilot privacy and new-tab controls.

Update Edge and restart it
- In Edge, select Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Install an update if Edge offers one.
- Close and reopen Edge, then select the Copilot icon again.
These are general browser troubleshooting steps recommended by Microsoft, not a guaranteed Copilot-specific repair. See What to do if Microsoft Edge isn’t working.
If Edge itself is unstable or pages display incorrectly
- Crashes or slowdowns: Close unneeded tabs and temporarily disable extensions you do not need, then check whether Edge behaves normally.
- Page display problems: Microsoft says clearing browsing data can sometimes resolve display issues. This is a general browser check, not a guaranteed fix for the Copilot pane.
- Persistent browser problems: On Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair. Microsoft says Repair should not affect browser data or settings. Use it for continuing Edge problems, not as a promised Copilot fix.
If Copilot cannot connect
On Windows, open the Get Help app and run Microsoft’s Copilot connectivity troubleshooter. It checks firewall rules and other possible connection blockers. The same Microsoft support page describes a separate license troubleshooter for Copilot icons in eligible Microsoft 365 apps; that is not established as a fix for the Edge pane. If Edge itself cannot update or connect, network restrictions may be relevant. Microsoft notes that connectivity, VPN interference, or organization-blocked endpoints can affect downloading or updating Edge. That guidance concerns Edge installation and updates; it does not establish a VPN as the cause of a Copilot sidebar failure. If this is a work-managed Edge profile
Organizations can control the Copilot experience in Edge. If the icon or setting is missing, or Copilot behaves differently on a managed device, ask your IT administrator to check the organization’s policy, account eligibility, and managed network restrictions. Privacy setting that is easy to mistake for a fix
Depending on your prompt and settings, Copilot may use browsing context such as the current page, page title, open tabs, or browser history. To control use of that web context, open the toolbar’s More (…) menu > Copilot and AI and turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web. This changes whether Copilot can use browsing context; it is not a switch for restoring a missing or broken pane. Microsoft explains this control in its Copilot in Edge guide.
