The official documentation behind this topic describes Microsoft Copilot Pages and Workflows in Microsoft Copilot—not a GitHub Copilot feature called “canvases.” Pages gives a chat response an editable, shareable workspace; Workflows builds automations for supported Microsoft 365 services. They solve different problems, and a Page does not run a workflow. If you meant GitHub Copilot specifically, these instructions do not establish how to build a GitHub workflow.
First, choose the right meaning of “canvas”
In Microsoft Copilot, a “canvas” may refer to the editable surface in Copilot Pages. It can also refer to a Power Apps canvas app: a custom business application assembled on a design surface. These are different products and tasks.

- Use Pages when you want to turn Copilot Chat content into a document-like artifact you can revise and share.
- Use Workflows when you want Copilot to create an automation across supported Microsoft 365 services.
- Use Power Apps canvas apps when you want to build a custom app interface over business data. See Microsoft’s guide to building canvas applications.
The steps below cover Microsoft Copilot Pages and Workflows. They should not be read as GitHub Copilot instructions.
How Copilot Pages work
Pages lets you move a Copilot Chat response into a persistent, editable workspace beside the chat. You can work on the content directly or ask Copilot to revise or expand selected text. It suits material that needs drafting, iteration, or collaboration, such as a project brief, meeting notes, or a draft communication. Microsoft explains the feature in its overview of how Copilot Pages works.

Create a Page from a chat
- Open Copilot Chat and start a conversation about a deliverable you expect to keep working on. Be specific about its audience, purpose, and desired format.
- Create a Page from the new-chat interface, or ask Copilot for a response and choose Edit in Pages on that response. The Page opens beside Copilot Chat, according to Microsoft’s getting-started guide.
- Give the Page a clear title, then edit its content directly. To change a passage with Copilot, select the text and request a revision or extension.
- Review Copilot’s proposed edits before applying them. Keep the Page as the working version when the content is likely to evolve or needs to be shared.
For additional details about moving between chat and a Page, see Microsoft’s Using Copilot Pages.
Check access and storage
Availability depends on account type and storage. Microsoft Support says work or school users need SharePoint or OneDrive storage; access may be available even without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Personal-account availability depends on eligible Microsoft 365 plans. Plan names and eligibility can change, so check Microsoft’s current Pages eligibility guidance and, for a work or school account, any organization controls.

How to create a workflow in Microsoft Copilot
Workflows uses natural-language instructions to generate an automation for supported Microsoft 365 services. A workflow can be scheduled or started by an event; it is separate from a Page. Microsoft’s Workflows getting-started guide describes the available setup and management experience.
Check availability and connector support first
Microsoft’s April 2026 guidance describes Workflows as a Frontier early-access rollout in selected markets and languages, starting in the United States and English for eligible Microsoft 365 consumer plans. It is not a universal entitlement; confirm that the feature appears for your account and region.

Workflows supports a limited set of Microsoft 365 connectors. The cited Microsoft guide says non-Microsoft and custom connectors are not supported. Before designing an automation, verify that the service it must use is in the supported set; a natural-language prompt cannot remove that connector limitation.
Describe, inspect, and test the automation
- In Copilot, open Workflows if it is available for your account.
- Describe the workflow in plain language. State the trigger (for example, a schedule or supported event), the action, the destination or service, and the result you expect.
- Review the workflow Copilot generates in the visual designer. Check that its trigger, actions, and destinations match your intention.
- Test the workflow and inspect what it did before relying on it. Use the Workflows or Activity area to monitor and manage it.
If teammates need to review the process, you can document its purpose, inputs, and expected outcome in a Page. That is a practical use of two separate features, not an indication that Pages itself executes or controls the workflow.

Pages or Workflows: which should you use?
| Question | Copilot Pages | Workflows |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Keep chat content as an editable, durable artifact. | Automate actions across supported Microsoft 365 services. |
| How you work with it | Edit content directly or request revisions to selected text. | Describe an automation, inspect the generated workflow, test it, then monitor it. |
| Access considerations | Depends on account type, eligible storage or subscription, and organization controls. | Frontier early access with availability limited by eligibility, market, and language. |
| Main constraint | Account and storage eligibility affect access and collaboration. | Only a limited set of Microsoft 365 connectors is supported; non-Microsoft and custom connectors are not supported. |
Why you may not see Workflows
- The rollout may not include your account or market. Microsoft describes Workflows as early access through Frontier, with selected-market and language availability.
- Your organization may control access. For work or school accounts, check with your Microsoft 365 administrator if the feature is missing.
- The required service may not be supported. Workflows cannot automate through a non-Microsoft or custom connector under the cited guidance.
Keep Power Apps canvas apps separate
Power Apps canvas apps are custom applications, not Copilot Pages workspaces. Microsoft’s documentation lists Copilot in canvas apps as a separate preview feature with its own prerequisites. Its October 1, 2026 user documentation says an app can use SharePoint or Dataverse as a data source, but not both in the same app, and requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Those details apply to that Power Apps feature, not Pages or Workflows.
