1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo convert an image to Base64, encode the image’s binary bytes, identify its actual media type, then place the encoded payload after data:<media-type>;base64,. For example, a PNG data URL starts data:image/png;base64,. The comma separates the metadata from the payload; the Base64 string alone is not a complete data URL.
How do you convert an image to Base64?
- Start with the image file’s bytes. Base64 encodes binary data; do not first read the file as UTF-8 text, which can corrupt the image.
- Encode the bytes. Use a Base64 encoder available in your environment. MDN documents examples for the Unix
base64command, PowerShell’sConvert.ToBase64String, and JavaScript’s native Base64 APIs: MDN’s data URL guide. - Determine the image’s actual media type. Use a type such as
image/pngorimage/jpeg; do not assume every image is PNG. - Assemble the URL. Put the media type and
;base64before a comma, then append the encoded bytes:data:<media-type>;base64,<payload>. - Use it where a URL is accepted and check the result. For instance, an HTML image source or a CSS URL can contain a data URL. If the image does not render, inspect the media type, marker, comma, and payload.
Example shape (the angle-bracketed payload is illustrative, not a valid image):

data:image/png;base64,<BASE64_IMAGE_BYTES>
A Base64 encoder creates the payload, not necessarily the metadata or the full data URL. If you omit the media type, the data URL defaults to text/plain;charset=US-ASCII, which does not label the content as an image. Data URLs can also contain non-Base64 data represented with percent encoding, but that is a different workflow from encoding binary image bytes. See the RFC 2397 definition of the data URL scheme.

Use the complete URL—not just the encoded characters—in a property or attribute that accepts a URL. In HTML, the value of an image’s src can be a data URL; in CSS, a URL-valued property can use url(...). Keep the media type consistent with the file and include the comma before the payload. Then open or render the page and confirm the image appears correctly.

Data URLs do not have a normal relative-URL form. Their data portion is opaque, so adding a query string does not create ordinary URL query parameters. If you need to replace an image independently, use a separately addressed image URL instead.
When should you use a data URL instead of an image URL?
Data URLs were designed for small inline values. They can be useful when a small asset needs to travel inside a document or stylesheet, avoiding a separately addressed resource for that use. They are not a general image optimization technique.

| Decision factor | Data URL may fit | Ordinary image URL may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Asset size | A small, simple image that does not make the source unwieldy. | A larger image whose encoded payload would add substantial text to the document or stylesheet. |
| Reuse | A one-off asset embedded in a single document or stylesheet. | An image shared across multiple pages or contexts. |
| Caching and updates | The image is intentionally coupled to its containing document. | The image should be independently addressable, replaceable, or managed separately. |
| Workflow | A self-contained output is more useful than easily inspected source. | Readable source, independent updates, and ordinary image delivery matter more. |
| Performance | Only if testing on the actual page shows this choice meets the goal. | Only if testing on the actual page shows this choice meets the goal. |
Inlining can avoid a separate resource address in that use case, but that alone does not establish a speedup. The cited sources provide no general performance comparison between data URLs and ordinary image URLs. If performance matters, compare both approaches on the target page and optimize images for the required visual quality; MDN’s HTTP compression guidance recommends compressing or optimizing web images.
How large can a data URL be, and is there a recommended limit?
There is no universal recommended inline image size established by browser maximums. MDN says browsers are not required to support any particular maximum data URL length. It reports implementation ceilings of 512 MB in Chromium and Firefox and 2048 MB in Safari (WebKit), as accessed in 2026. Those figures describe reported browser limits, not sensible payload targets. A large inline value can make HTML or CSS bulky and harder to inspect, edit, reuse, or cache independently; whether an application, intermediary, build tool, or document context accepts a long value also depends on that environment. See MDN’s data URL notes.

What can go wrong, and what are the security implications?
- The image does not render: Check that the actual media type is correct,
;base64is spelled correctly, the comma is present, and the payload is intact. MDN notes that invalid media parameters or a typo in the Base64 marker may be ignored without an error, so inspect the rendered image rather than relying only on the URL text. - The content is labeled incorrectly: Omitting the media type defaults to plain text rather than an image type. A correctly encoded payload still needs appropriate metadata.
- The URL is treated like an ordinary web address: Data URLs have no normal relative form, and a query string does not behave as an ordinary URL query. Modern browsers treat data URLs as unique opaque origins, and block top-level navigation to them as a security measure. These behaviors are documented by MDN.
- The content is assumed safe because it is Base64: Base64 is an encoding, not a security control. The content is interpreted according to its media type; RFC 2397 advises applications not to interpret content whose media type is disallowed by their configuration. Follow the rules of the context that consumes the URL rather than treating encoding as sanitization. See RFC 2397.
Is “data URI” different from “data URL”?
“Data URI” is the former name; “data URL” is the current term used by MDN. Both commonly refer to the same data: scheme. Its general form is data:[<media-type>][;base64],<data>: metadata, a comma separator, and the data payload.
