Render an invoice template with Grover
Grover’s documented Rails pattern is to render a template to a string and pass the HTML to Grover.new(...).to_pdf. The following controller illustrates the flow; adapt the model lookup, template path, and authorization to your application.

The Node/Puppeteer/Chromium runtime must be available where the Rails process invokes PDF generation. Grover accepts HTML or a URL. When rendering supplied HTML with relative asset paths, set a suitable display_url or rewrite paths to absolute URLs; otherwise Chromium resolves relative paths against its display URL, which the README says defaults to http://example.com.

Render with Wicked PDF
Wicked PDF provides Rails controller integration using the wkhtmltopdf executable. A common response shape is:

The README also documents rendering to a string and saving the resulting bytes. Because wkhtmltopdf runs outside Rails, use absolute references for CSS, JavaScript, and images, or configure helpers and paths so the utility can fetch them. For raw bytes, Rails’ send_data response can return the PDF with a filename and application/pdf content type.

Make invoice styles and assets available
PDF output is produced by a separate rendering process, not by the browser tab where an administrator previewed the invoice. Ensure that process can access every stylesheet, logo, font, and image the HTML references.
- Use absolute URLs or renderer-supported asset helpers for CSS, JavaScript, and images. Wicked PDF specifically advises absolute references; Grover needs a suitable base/display URL when the HTML contains relative paths.
- Check that production hostnames, authentication, cookies, and credentials make assets reachable from the renderer process. A URL that works only in an authenticated browser session may fail when fetched independently.
- Keep a dedicated invoice layout rather than depending on application-wide navigation or interactive page elements. Include the markup and styles the PDF actually needs.
- Check print styling and page breaks on representative invoices. Puppeteer documents that PDF generation uses print media by default; to request screen styling instead, its API directs callers to emulate screen media before
page.pdf(). See the Puppeteer Page.pdf API.
Return the PDF as a download
Use Rails’ send_data when you already have PDF bytes, as in the Grover example, or use Wicked PDF’s format.pdf integration. Set an intentional filename, the application/pdf MIME type, and attachment disposition for a download. Protect the invoice lookup with the same account or user authorization as the HTML invoice page; a guessable ID must not expose another customer’s document.

Validate output before relying on it
There is no single renderer setting that guarantees a correct invoice across every engine and deployment. Generate PDFs using representative records in the production-like environment and inspect:
- Page size, margins, page breaks, and repeated headers or footers.
- Long descriptions, large line-item tables, and invoices that span several pages.
- Totals, tax formatting, dates, and currency values at page boundaries.
- Unicode characters, logos, remote images, and fonts.
- Print-specific CSS and any content that depends on JavaScript.
Security and operational considerations
Invoice rendering can create a server-side request risk if untrusted HTML or asset URLs are allowed. Wicked PDF’s security guidance warns that user-supplied page content can request internal IP addresses or hostnames, potentially exposing cloud metadata. Sanitize untrusted markup and restrict the renderer’s network access to destinations it genuinely needs. Avoid treating customer-provided URLs as safe merely because they appear inside an invoice.

Both browser-based and wkhtmltopdf rendering add runtime dependencies beyond Rails. Confirm the executable or Chromium installation in every environment, including background workers if generation happens asynchronously. The cited documentation does not provide controlled comparative performance figures, so measure generation time and resource use with your own invoice sizes and concurrency rather than assuming one engine is faster.

- Styles or images are missing: The renderer cannot resolve relative or protected URLs. Switch to absolute URLs or a valid base/display URL, and confirm the renderer can reach those resources with the required credentials.
- Grover cannot launch Chromium: The deployment lacks the Puppeteer/Chromium runtime or cannot execute it. Install the required packages and browser in the same environment that runs the Rails code, then test there.
- PDF layout differs from the browser preview: Rendering engines and media modes differ. Check the selected engine’s behavior, print CSS, page dimensions, and JavaScript dependencies; validate a representative output from the deployed runtime.
- Wicked PDF reports that wkhtmltopdf is missing: Install the executable and ensure it is on the application process’s PATH or configure the binary location according to the gem documentation.
- Rails returns HTML instead of a PDF: Ensure the request negotiates the PDF format and that the controller has a
format.pdfresponse, or explicitly return bytes withsend_data. - PDF generation fails only in production: Compare OS packages, binary paths, Node/Chromium availability, asset host configuration, and network access with the working environment.
