You can convert AAC to MP3, but you cannot guarantee zero quality loss. Both formats use perceptual compression, and converting AAC to MP3 cannot restore audio information discarded when the AAC was made. If MP3 is required, encode from the best source available and keep the original AAC; if the target device supports AAC, avoid an unnecessary conversion.
Why AAC-to-MP3 conversion cannot be lossless
AAC is a perceptual audio format designed to distribute sound efficiently. MP3 also uses perceptual coding, which can discard or reduce the precision of audio components. When you convert AAC to MP3, the software decodes the AAC signal and encodes it again using MP3. The MP3 encoder makes its own decisions, but it cannot bring back details already missing from the AAC file. The Library of Congress describes these characteristics in its AAC format description and MP3 format description.

A high-quality MP3 setting can limit the additional compromises made during the second encoding. It does not make the conversion lossless, nor does a larger output file prove that the source recording was better.

Decide whether you need an MP3
If the device or service accepts AAC, keep and use the AAC file instead of transcoding it. The Library of Congress says AAC quality at a given data rate generally surpasses MP3 quality, though compatibility depends on the player and AAC profile. Check the target device if it is older or specialized. AAC may be carried in an M4A/MP4 wrapper or stored as a raw AAC bitstream; the extension alone does not guarantee that every tool or player will handle every profile.

If MP3 is mandatory, treat the output as a compatibility copy, not an upgrade. Keep the AAC original. If you have the original WAV, FLAC, ALAC, or another lossless master, use that as the input instead of the AAC copy. A lossless file created by decoding AAC can preserve that decoded signal, but it cannot restore what AAC compression removed.
Convert AAC to MP3 with FFmpeg
For a VBR MP3 using FFmpeg’s LAME encoder, run:
ffmpeg -i input.m4a -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 0 output.mp3Replace input.m4a with the actual source filename and extension. In FFmpeg, -q:a selects LAME’s VBR quality control; it is not a bitrate setting. The example uses the high-quality end of that control, but it cannot guarantee transparency or recover source information. Your FFmpeg build must include libmp3lame. The FFmpeg codec documentation describes the LAME wrapper and its VBR and bitrate controls.

For a fixed output bitrate, use:
ffmpeg -i input.m4a -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 320k output.mp3Here, -b:a 320k sets the MP3 bitrate. This is an illustrative high-bitrate choice, not a universal optimum or a promise of lossless sound. Higher bitrate can reduce the MP3 encoding compromise, while increasing file size; it cannot reverse the earlier AAC encoding.
If FFmpeg reports that it cannot find the input or encoder, check the filename, extension, and installed build. AAC commonly appears in an M4A/MP4 container, but raw AAC bitstreams also exist. A build without libmp3lame will not support the command as written.

Use Audacity if you prefer a graphical workflow
Audacity documents exporting MP3 through an installed LAME encoder or FFmpeg. The precise availability and controls depend on the installed version and encoder. Follow Audacity’s external encoder export instructions, choose MP3, and select the available bitrate or VBR option. Exporting through a graphical interface changes the workflow, not the lossy-to-lossy limitation.
Common conversion misconceptions
- “320 kbps makes the MP3 lossless.” MP3 remains perceptually coded, and the AAC input may already be missing information.
- “Converting AAC to WAV and then to MP3 restores quality.” A WAV intermediate stores the decoded AAC signal without another lossy encode before MP3, but cannot recreate details absent from AAC.
- “A larger output bitrate means a better source.” Bitrate describes the new MP3 encoding. It does not upgrade the original recording.
- “Every AAC file is interchangeable.” AAC has profiles and can use different wrappers. Preserve the original and confirm that the chosen tool reads the file correctly.
Check the converted file
After exporting, confirm that the MP3 opens and plays on the device or service that requires it. Check the filename and any important tags, then listen for problems such as dropouts or an incorrect track. These checks can catch conversion or compatibility issues; they cannot establish that the MP3 is identical to the AAC or recover lost detail.
