Install Puppeteer and choose how to manage Chrome
The puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser during installation. It is the straightforward choice for a local script or a deployment where Puppeteer should manage its browser. The puppeteer-core package does not download a browser; use it when you manage Chrome separately or connect to a remote browser. Puppeteer guarantees compatibility with its bundled browser, while a separately specified executable may not be compatible.

Generate the PDF with Node.js
Install Puppeteer in a project with npm install puppeteer. Save this as save-article.js, replace the example URL with the article address, then run node save-article.js.

});The script waits for the document to be parsed, for an article element, for network activity to settle (up to 15 seconds), and for used fonts to finish loading before printing. Change the selector to one that identifies the actual story on the target site; a generic selector may not exist or may match the wrong content. The network-idle wait is a useful signal, not proof that every page’s client-rendered or lazy-loaded content is complete.
page.pdf() waits for fonts by default, and the explicit document.fonts.ready wait makes the script’s readiness check visible. Neither can guarantee that the page or runtime has an appropriate Devanagari font. The browser documentation describes PDF generation and the document fonts interface.
Choose print or screen styling and paper size
Print CSS is the default
Puppeteer prints using the page’s print media styles by default. Those styles may intentionally hide navigation, change colors, or alter article layout. If you want the webpage’s screen styles instead, call await page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(). Screen styling can look closer to the browser view, but it may not paginate as well on paper.

Select an appropriate page format
The PDF API supports standard formats including A4 and Letter. A4 measures 8.2677 × 11.6929 inches (21 × 29.7 cm); Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches (21.59 × 27.94 cm). These dimensions come from Puppeteer’s paper-format reference. You can also set dimensions and margins explicitly in the page.pdf() options.
Colors are adjusted for printing by default. If preserving the page’s exact colors matters, the page’s print CSS can use -webkit-print-color-adjust: exact. The printBackground: true option in the example asks Puppeteer to include background graphics; inspect the resulting file because page styles still affect what appears.
Make sure Hindi text and article content render correctly
- Wait for the page’s article-specific readiness condition, such as a known article selector or a page-specific JavaScript condition. A generic network-idle event cannot establish that lazy-loaded sections have appeared.
- Allow fonts to load before printing. The browser’s font readiness promise resolves after fonts used by the document and related layout work have completed.
- Open the PDF and check Devanagari characters, conjuncts and matras, line wrapping, images, and page breaks. If glyphs are missing or shaping is wrong, determine which fonts the page loaded and whether the runtime has suitable font coverage; the script alone cannot ensure it.
- Check that the full story—not just the visible first screen—is present. Pages that lazy-load content may need a site-specific scroll or readiness procedure before printing.
These checks matter because the final rendering depends on the target page, its font files, and the browser environment. No particular publisher’s font choice or automation behavior can be assumed for an unspecified URL.

Handle slow pages without waiting forever
Some sites keep requests open, so waitForNetworkIdle() may time out even when the article is usable. Give waits sensible bounds and prefer a selector or condition tied to the article. If your script treats network-idle timeout as non-fatal, as the example does, make sure the subsequent page-specific readiness check is strong enough for your target. If the article is still incomplete, replace that fallback with a site-specific wait rather than printing prematurely.
Troubleshooting
Puppeteer cannot find Chrome
The package’s browser download may not have run—for example, an installation process may have blocked package install scripts. Follow Puppeteer’s installation guide to install its browser explicitly with the documented browser-install command, or configure a compatible separately managed browser. A separately specified executable is not covered by the bundled-browser compatibility guarantee.
Hindi characters are missing or appear incorrectly
Wait for fonts and inspect the PDF, not just the browser page. Check which fonts the page actually loaded and whether the browser environment has a font with the required Devanagari coverage. Font readiness confirms loading and layout work, not that a suitable font exists or that every glyph will render correctly.

The PDF looks different from the webpage
Check the media type first: print CSS is the default. Switch to screen emulation only if the screen presentation is what you need. Then review the selected paper size, margins, print backgrounds, and page-specific print rules.
The PDF is missing part of the story
Wait for a selector or condition that represents the article’s loaded state. For lazy-loaded pages, scrolling or another site-specific action may be needed. Network settling alone does not prove that all content has been rendered.

Does Puppeteer preserve the Hindi page’s original appearance in the PDF?
Not necessarily. PDF output uses print CSS by default; the page’s styles and the fonts available to the browser determine the result.
Can I use puppeteer-core for this?
Yes, if you provide or connect to a browser yourself. Unlike puppeteer, puppeteer-core does not download a browser.
