For a speed-first 720p YouTube upload, start with HandBrake’s Very Fast 720p30 preset if 30 fps suits your footage. For a 60 fps source where smooth motion matters, compare the Creator 720p60 preset instead. For an x264 encode, test constant quality at RF 22 on a representative clip; HandBrake’s recommended 720p range is RF 19–23.
HandBrake prepares a video file for upload; it does not encode a live broadcast. The settings for a YouTube Live encoder are different.

Choose a preset that matches the footage
For speed: Very Fast 720p30
In HandBrake, select the official Very Fast 720p30 preset as a practical starting point when 30 fps is appropriate. Its documented format is MP4 with H.264 video and AAC stereo audio, using a “Very fast” encoding speed profile. The 720p30 preset also scales down higher-resolution sources and limits higher frame rates to 30 fps. That frame-rate change can reduce motion smoothness, so do not choose it automatically for footage recorded at 60 fps. See HandBrake’s official preset documentation.

If the source was recorded at 60 fps and preserving smooth motion matters, compare HandBrake’s Creator 720p60 preset. It is intended for video-hosting uploads such as YouTube and uses H.264 in MP4, with a higher-quality, medium-speed orientation. It may encode more slowly on a budget PC than Very Fast 720p30. YouTube advises: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” HandBrake’s preset list and YouTube’s upload settings describe these respective choices.

Set quality without chasing a fixed bitrate
For x264 constant-quality encoding at 720p, HandBrake recommends RF 19–23. RF 22 is a reasonable first sample: move toward a lower number for higher quality and usually larger files, or toward a higher number for smaller files and potentially less detail. HandBrake says changes of 1–2 RF are usually noticeable, so encode a short representative section and inspect it before processing the full video. RF is not a predictable target bitrate, and RF values cannot be compared directly across different encoders. HandBrake’s quality guidance.
For SDR uploads, YouTube’s current reference video bitrates are 5 Mbps for 720p at 24, 25, or 30 fps and 7.5 Mbps for 720p at 48, 50, or 60 fps (YouTube upload guidance, accessed 2026). These are reference rates, not a command to set HandBrake’s average bitrate to those numbers and not a prediction of what RF 22 will produce. YouTube permits variable bitrate and says its upload guidance does not require a bitrate limit. Its upload page also specifies audio formats including AAC-LC and a 48 kHz sample rate. Keep the image size and filters sensible
Preserve the source’s shape and useful detail
Keep the source aspect ratio and avoid cropping away meaningful content. Do not upscale a low-resolution video just to label it 720p as a general quality fix. HandBrake says upscaling is not generally recommended, although it notes that enabling it may be useful for YouTube uploads in some cases. Let the sizing settings respect the source unless you have a specific delivery requirement. HandBrake’s resizing guidance.

Skip costly filters unless the footage needs them
On an older computer, avoid enabling filters without a visible reason. Filters can substantially affect encoding performance; HandBrake specifically identifies NLMeans denoising as memory-intensive. The size of the slowdown depends on the footage and hardware, so there is no dependable encode-time estimate without those details. HandBrake’s encoding-performance documentation.

Understand what “budget PC” can mean for encoding
HandBrake’s current requirements page lists 16 GB of memory for its formally supported standard- and high-definition transcoding tier (480p through 1080p) and 32 GB for 4K. That is the documented support guidance, not proof that every computer below those figures will fail at 720p or that every user needs a memory upgrade. The page also lists current processor-family requirements, which may not describe many older budget PCs. HandBrake’s system requirements.
A hardware encoder such as Quick Sync or NVENC is useful only if the relevant hardware and software are supported and detected by your HandBrake installation. If offered, it can be a speed-oriented option, but results depend on the processor or graphics hardware, drivers, filters, and workload. HandBrake says its hardware presets use dedicated media engines and are optimized for encoding speed; they are not a guaranteed quality or compatibility improvement. HandBrake’s official presets.

HandBrake upload workflow
- Open the source: launch HandBrake and open the video file you intend to upload.
- Select a preset: choose Very Fast 720p30 for a speed-first 30 fps output, or compare Creator 720p60 when the source is 60 fps and you want to retain that motion.
- Check dimensions and frame rate: confirm the output is 720p, the aspect ratio is preserved, and the frame rate is suitable for the recording. Avoid an unnecessary conversion from 60 fps to 30 fps.
- Set a quality sample: for x264 constant quality, try RF 22 and encode a representative segment. Review detail, motion, and file size; adjust within RF 19–23 if needed.
- Encode and inspect: save the MP4, play it back to check for visual or audio problems, then upload that file to YouTube.
HandBrake file encoding is not YouTube Live
These HandBrake recommendations are for an uploaded video file. For a live broadcast, YouTube’s separate live-encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p60, using CBR. Those are live-ingest recommendations, not HandBrake file-upload targets. YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than encoding one file for upload, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
