Control Resonant Reminded Me Why Boss Fights Can Be Good, Actually

The Dancer’s second form turns a straightforward attack strategy into a lesson in timing. That shift helps explain how a boss fight can make learning feel satisfying and thematic.

A good boss fight can make learning feel like part of the story. In CONTROL Resonant, The Dancer first seems easy to overpower, then becomes faster and more aggressive. The breakthrough is not a bigger combo: it is recognizing that the opening phase has been teaching the player how to move with the fight.

Why The Dancer works as a boss fight

Kotaku’s Zack Zwiezen describes The Dancer as a slender figure moving through hops and chassés in a theater surrounded by paralyzed, floating audience members. The setting establishes a performance before the fight’s mechanics make that idea matter.

Zwiezen initially relied on aerial attacks, took hits, and beat the first form. The second form was faster and more aggressive, and the same rush-in approach stopped working. After several attempts, he noticed that frustration was making him play worse. Instead of immediately changing the difficulty, he slowed down, jumped less, and watched the boss’s movements. [Kotaku]

His interpretation was that the opening phase worked as a rehearsal for the later patterns. On the successful attempt, he dodged in rhythm and used fewer indiscriminate combos. As he put it, “I need to dance with this monster to defeat it.” The important change is behavioral: the encounter rewards observation and timing over simply attacking harder.

This is one player’s account, not a guaranteed strategy or a claim that every player will read the cues in the same way. But it makes a persuasive case for why a boss can be satisfying: the player learns what the fight is asking, changes approach, and sees that understanding pay off in a way that fits the arena.

How the encounter reflects Remedy’s design goals

In a September 29, 2026 interview with PlayStation Blog, Remedy Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov said the team intended bosses to be “skill checks” for the player. He described a process that began with team pitches, moved through selecting ideas for the desired player experience and prototyping, and then included documenting creature behavior and iterating with concept artists and writers. That cross-discipline work helps explain why The Dancer’s theatrical setting feels relevant rather than decorative. Art Director Elmeri Raitanen said each Resonant boss was built around a theme, citing control inspired by mycelium or a hive mind, and said the team wanted to evoke awe and a sense of the majestic or divine. In The Dancer encounter, the theater and the player’s eventual need to match the creature’s rhythm bring setting, movement, and challenge together.

What makes a boss feel like a test instead of a chore?

The Dancer illustrates three useful tests for encounter design:

Rank #3
Control Ultimate Edition (PS5)
  • Uncover the mysteries. Can you handle the bureau's dark secrets? Unfold an epic supernatural struggle, filled with unexpected characters and bizarre events, as you search for your missing brother, and discover the truth that has brought you here
  • everything is your weapon. Unleash destruction through transforming weaponry and telekinetic powers. Discover New ways to annihilate your enemies as you harness powerful abilities to turn everything around you into a lethal weapon
  • explore a hidden world. Delve deep into the Ominous expanses of a secretive government Agency. Explore the bureau's shifting environments only to discover that there is always more than meets the eye
  • fight for control. Battle a relentless enemy through exciting missions and challenging boss fights to earn powerful upgrades that maximize abilities and customize your weaponry
  • experience true next-generation gaming with increased visual fidelity through 4K graphics, ray-tracing and a 60FPS performance mode
  • Readable cues: The player can observe the boss and learn from its movements.
  • Meaningful adaptation: Progress depends on changing timing and behavior, not just repeating the same attack.
  • Mechanical fit: The way the player must act reinforces the encounter’s setting or theme.

A fourth test is whether the fight preserves tension without turning repetition into attrition. Reviews suggest that this is not a strength of every encounter in CONTROL Resonant. PC Gamer found the bosses more engaging to navigate than generic threats, while criticizing long-feeling health bars and broader combat friction, including inconsistent targeting. GamesCreed likewise praised the Resonances’ visual distinctions but said some fights could become extended health-bar grinds after their patterns were learned; it also noted camera and targeting problems in some aerial fights. Those are reviewers’ assessments, not measurements, but they are a useful counterweight to praising one memorable encounter. [PC Gamer] [GamesCreed]

Worthplaying offers a more positive mechanics perspective, noting varied attacks and phases, including moments when players handle minions before returning to a boss, as well as health recovery opportunities in some encounters. Taken together, these reviews suggest that variety and visual identity can help, but do not automatically prevent a fight from feeling too long or frustrating. [Worthplaying]

Why the praise should stay specific

The Dancer is a strong example of a boss fight making its learning curve part of its identity. It is not proof that boss fights are inherently good, or that every Resonant encounter gets the balance right. The case is narrower and more useful: when a fight teaches through its patterns, asks for a change in strategy, and connects that change to its theme, the eventual win can feel earned rather than merely completed.
