Control Resonant is right to move beyond the Oldest House—not because a Manhattan setting is automatically better, but because it gives the series a new point of view. Jesse Faden entered the Bureau as an outsider. The sequel makes her brother Dylan, who grew up confined there, its playable lead and sends him into a city that is unfamiliar to him. That reversal gives the change of setting a story to tell.
Why leaving the Oldest House fits this sequel
The Oldest House was more than a backdrop: its sealed, shifting corridors made the Bureau feel like a place whose rules Jesse—and the player—had to uncover. Repeating that structure with a different protagonist could have brought back the same discoveries. Dylan’s history points the other way. Remedy describes him as having spent much of his life inside the House; stepping into a warped Manhattan makes the outside world his unknown territory.

That is the creative case for the change: the setting follows the character. In a 2026 interview with Tom’s Guide, Remedy creative director Mikael Kasurinen described the games as “two sides of the same coin.” He framed the first game as a descent into darkness and the sequel as a step outward into a distorted New York. The quote describes the intent, not a guarantee that every player will prefer the new direction.

Manhattan has a job beyond making the map bigger
Remedy’s announced design gives the city a narrative and structural role. Rather than describe an undifferentiated sprawl, the developer has outlined distinct zones, exploration, and narrative quests, with an emphasis on authored experiences instead of filling a huge map with grind. Ordinary urban geography also gives the series new places to put its paranatural disruptions: the strange can intrude on spaces that would otherwise feel familiar.
#1 Best Overall
- Control Ultimate Edition contains the main game and all previously released expansions ("The Foundation" and "Awe") in one great value package
- Can you handle The Bureau's dark secrets? Unfold an epic supernatural struggle, filled with unexpected characters and bizarre events, as you search for your missing brother, and discover the truth that has brought you here.
- Unleash destruction through transforming weaponry and telekinetic powers. Discover new ways to annihilate your enemies as you harness powerful abilities to turn everything around you into a lethal weapon
- Delve deep into the ominous expanses of a secretive government agency. Explore The Bureau's shifting environments only to discover that there is always more than meets the eye
- Battle a relentless enemy through exciting missions and challenging boss fights to earn powerful upgrades that maximize abilities and customize your weaponry
That does not establish that the new areas will be better designed or more compelling to play than the Oldest House. It does make the expansion purposeful on paper. Manhattan is not simply more space; it is a different kind of space for a character shaped by confinement to encounter.
The shift changes who is learning the world
| Element | Control | Control Resonant |
|---|---|---|
| Point of view | Jesse arrives at the Bureau as an outsider. | Dylan, who grew up confined in the Oldest House, ventures into an unfamiliar city. |
| Space | An enclosed, shifting headquarters. | Distinct zones in a paranaturally warped Manhattan. |
| Action framing | The first game centers on Jesse’s experience in the House. | Remedy describes Dylan using the shapeshifting melee weapon Aberrant alongside supernatural abilities and progression. |
| Story | Jesse’s entry into the Bureau establishes the Faden story. | Dylan leads, while Jesse remains central to the continuing sibling story. |
The action shift is part of the announced design, not a result established by hands-on testing. Remedy has described Control Resonant as a third-person action RPG, with Dylan’s Aberrant changing form for melee combat and supernatural abilities that develop through progression. That offers a different action vocabulary alongside the new setting, but the available descriptions alone cannot show how satisfying it feels to play.

- REALITY MEETS THE UNEXPLAINABLE -- Dive into a dark and brutalist-inspired world where daily reality has been corrupted by an otherworldly force.
Jesse still connects the new direction to Control
A new lead does not mean the sequel abandons the Faden story. Remedy says Dylan drives the narrative while Jesse remains central. That balance gives the game room to make Dylan’s unfamiliarity with the outside world its own premise without treating the first game’s protagonist as disposable. The setting and point of view change; the siblings’ shared story continues.

Some players may miss the Oldest House’s claustrophobic, self-contained atmosphere; an online discussion has voiced disappointment about the move away from it. That is evidence of one concern, not a measure of wider player opinion. Remedy’s announcements and Kasurinen’s interview explain the creative rationale, but they do not establish a consensus or show that Manhattan will deliver better level design or gameplay.

Still, the sequel’s premise makes the risk worthwhile. If the first Control asked players to learn an impossible institution beside an outsider, Control Resonant can ask them to see the outside through the eyes of someone formed by that institution. On the announced premise, leaving the House is not a rejection of what made Control distinctive; it is a way to examine that world from its opposite side.
